Weaning off from ppi advice

Hi all.

Need guidance on how to wean off ppi. I was put on 1 pantoprazole 40 mg + Zantag 150 mg in the morning and 1 Zantag 150 mg at night. I was on this regiment for 4 wks. I went to another GI and he put me on 1 omeprazole 20 mg in the morning and Zantag 300mg before bed. I have been on this regiment for 2 wks and decided to wean off. I took nothing in the morning and only Zantag 300 mg at bed for 3 days now. The disgestion issue was improved. My problem while on ppi was delayed gastric emptying and reflux when drinking water. The reflux caused moderate dysphagia.

I experienced gas burping and belching after meals and after drinking water during these 3 days of weaning down. I could feel the fume hitting my throat, spamming the esophagus and made the disphagia a little worse. Chest felt warm at night on a few occasions.

Should I reduce omeprazole down to 10mg and continue for 1 wk. or take Zantag 150 mg in the morning? My only concern now is the dysphagia. I can still swallow but it is a little uncomfortable. Or should I go back 20 mg omeprazole + 300 mg Zantag to heal the UES then wean off later.

Love how doctors just put patient on drugs.  It’s the answer to everything.  Glad that you are taking your health into your own hands.  I think you will get different answers from the folks on this board and I hope one of the answers will lead you down the right path.  I am assuming you have no erosive/cancer risk issues and that it’s ok for you to be off of these drugs.   I had been on PPIs for years before I decided to do something about it bc of terrible side effects.  I found out the hard way that part of my problem was delayed emptying and that PPIs made it worse.  Food just sat in my stomach bc of lack of acid.   I researched different options and what worked for me was Apple cider vinegar.   Sounds counter intuitive but it really helped my stomach with accelerating gastric emptying.  Hard part was getting off the PPIs.   I can’t speak to the dysphagia so that is something that you may have to discuss further with your doctor.  If you have to continue to be on it then make sure you supplement with nutrients like magnesium and b12 (among others).  Good luck and let us know how you are doing.

Thank you for your thought. You are right about the doc. pushing med to the patient. I wish they would take this med, come back and tell me how does it feel. I was dumb to take ppi when I had my first reflux. I recall now that I was ok the whole day after that first reflux incident.

I went for an endoscopy 3 wks. after I was on pantoprazole regiment. Everything was normal. H. pylori biopsy was negative. I did experienced globus sensation due to acid reflux right into my throat a few times. It got worse yesterday. I think I can nurse the throat back if I belch with gas only.

I think the Apple cider vinegar will ruin my throat further if I take it. I tried 2 Beltaine HCL pills + digestive enzymes at meal before and they helped somewhat. Since I was off with the ppi in the last 3 days I decided not to take HCL pills in anticipation of the stomach making more acid.

I just tried 10 mg omeprazole and see how things will progress for the day with the stuck throat feeling. I guess another week of delayed gastric emptying will not kill me. I lost 30 pounds since taking the first ppi pill 5 wks. ago. I appreciate if anyone else has any suggestions.

Summary of my journey to wean off ppi. It has been frustrating. However, I am in too deep and plan to press on.

+ I started taking nothing in the morning and one 300mg ranitidine before bed first 3 days. Got a few refluxes during the day mainly due to drinking water. Felt acid fume coming up irritating the throat. Took the usual morning supplements such as vitamin D3+K2, mastic gum, magnesium citrate, vit. B12, zinc-L-carnosine. DLG & digestive enzymes at meals.

+ Went back to reduced dose of 10mg omeprazole in the morning and 300mg ranitidine at bedtime for the next 2 days. Still experienced minor refluxes during the day.

+ Day 6 took 75 mg ranitidine in the morning and 150mg ranitidine @ bedtime. Still minor refluxes during the day. Surprisingly no heartburn at night with lower ranitidine dose.

+ Day 7 took 75mg ranitidine/morning & D-limonene @ bedtime, no ranitidine. No heartburn at night. This is an encouraging sign? Felt tingling sensation at chest.

+ Day 8 no ranitidine. Still felt tingling sensation at chest.
