A High Protein Egg White Pudding for People With Kidney Failure (HiPE KF)

This research study is for people experiencing kidney failure who are currently receiving dialysis treatment. Researchers want to compare a new high-protein egg white pudding with a standard nutritional drink called Ensure Plus. The main goals are to see if the egg white pudding is a practical option for people on dialysis and if it can improve their protein levels in the blood, much like other supplements. The study will also explore if the pudding helps with frailty (feeling weak) and if it affects what people eat or other things in their blood. For 12 weeks, participants will receive either the egg white pudding or Ensure Plus three times a week after their dialysis sessions.

What is this study about?

This study is called "A High Protein Egg White Pudding for People With Kidney Failure" or HiPE KF for short. It's designed for people who have kidney failure and are on dialysis. When you have kidney failure, your kidneys don't work as well as they should, and dialysis helps to clean your blood. Sometimes, people on dialysis can struggle to get enough protein, which is important for keeping muscles strong and staying healthy. This study is looking for new ways to help people get the protein they need.

The main idea is to see if a special egg white pudding, which is high in protein, can be a good way to give people this extra nutrition. Researchers want to compare it to a common nutritional drink called Ensure Plus. They're hoping to find out if this egg white pudding is easy for people to take, and if it can help improve their blood protein levels (called serum albumin) as effectively as Ensure Plus.

The study will also look at whether the egg white pudding helps people feel less frail or weak. They will also check if it changes what people eat generally or if it affects other things in their blood. By understanding these effects, the researchers hope to find better ways to support the health and well-being of people living with kidney failure who are on dialysis.

Key takeaways

  • A study for people with kidney failure on dialysis.
  • Compares a special egg white pudding to a standard nutritional drink (Ensure Plus).
  • Aims to see if the pudding can improve protein levels and reduce frailty.
  • Participation involves taking a supplement three times a week for 12 weeks.
  • No extra clinic visits; assessments happen during usual dialysis.
  • You have the right to leave the study at any time.

Who may be eligible?

To join this study, you need to be an adult (18 years or older) with long-term kidney disease who has been receiving dialysis regularly in a clinic for at least three months. Your blood protein levels (called serum albumin) need to be a bit low, specifically below 35 g/L. It's also important that you plan to stay in the Winnipeg area and not change your dialysis type for the next 12 weeks of the study.

There are also some reasons why you wouldn't be able to join. For example, if you are allergic to eggs or any ingredients in the study pudding, or if you've had a kidney transplant in the past, this study isn't for you. You also couldn't take part if you have certain health conditions like bowel diseases, cancer, or if you are pregnant or receiving chemotherapy.

Other reasons for not being able to join include if you're already starting a new exercise program during the study period, or if you simply cannot eat or drink the study products. The research team needs to make sure everyone in the study can safely participate and understand what they are agreeing to.

Could this study suit you?

Answer these quick questions to see if you may be eligible. This is a guide only — the research team makes the final call.

  1. Are you 18 years old or older?
  2. Do you have long-term kidney disease?
  3. Have you been on regular dialysis in a clinic for more than 3 months?
  4. Is your blood protein (serum albumin) a bit low (below 35 g/L)?
  5. Are you *not* allergic to eggs or other food ingredients?
  6. Are you *not* pregnant, undergoing chemotherapy, or planning to start an exercise program during the next 12 weeks?
Answer every question to see your result.

What does participation involve?

If you decide to join this study, you will receive either the special high-protein egg white pudding or the standard nutritional drink, Ensure Plus. You'll take this supplement three times a week, right after your dialysis sessions. This will continue for a total of 12 weeks.

Throughout the 12 weeks, the research team will monitor your progress. This will involve checking your blood levels to see if there are changes in your protein. They will also assess how you are feeling in terms of strength and frailty, and might ask about your usual daily food intake. There won't be any extra clinic visits beyond your regular dialysis schedule; the supplements and assessments will happen during or around your usual dialysis appointments.

Potential risks and benefits

Potential benefits of taking part could include improved protein levels in your blood, which can be important for overall health, especially with kidney failure. You might also find that you feel stronger or less frail. However, it's also possible that the supplement may not provide a benefit for you or that you might experience minor side effects, such as a mild upset stomach, although these are not expected to be serious. You have the right to withdraw from the study at any time, for any reason, without it affecting your medical care.

Common questions

What is serum albumin and why is it important?

Serum albumin is a type of protein found in your blood. Having good levels of it is important for your body to stay healthy, especially for people with kidney failure.

Will I know if I'm getting the egg white pudding or Ensure Plus?

No, this is a 'blinded' study, meaning you won't know which product you're receiving. This helps make the study results more reliable.

How often will I need to take the supplement?

You will take the supplement three times a week, usually at the end of your dialysis treatment.

What happens after the 12 weeks?

After 12 weeks, your participation in the study will end. You can then discuss with your doctor about your ongoing nutritional needs.

Will this study interfere with my regular dialysis treatment?

No, your regular dialysis treatment will continue as normal. The supplement will be given alongside your treatment.
