Thanks Ian hope you don't mind me asking are you having your hernia sorted or something else did the Dr say what was causing the coughing phlegm thing , I'm having all these horrid tests & apart from talking to my own GP who as had a letter from the hosp Dr I've no idea when this is goin to end , I've also been tested for some bacteria in my gut , no results for that yet ,

So sorry you are dealing with something like that, it sounds horrible! Have you seen any specialist regarding this? Ear, nose and throat? or maybe a pulmonologist? I have never had anything like that except for when I was on a particular heart medication once, it created such a horrible cough I was gagging from it. I went off the medicaiton, it was Lisinipril, and the cough went away.

I have a hiatus hernia apparently nothing bothers me apart from the cough it does nt bother me when asleep so that's a bonus & it does nt bother me when I chew gum , most people with hernias are short of breath & have chest pain I've got neither fortunately just a mucus cough waiting for results

Hi Moy yes I've been told coughing is a symptom I also get a checking feeling and I can't breath I panicked when first having them but have learned to stay calm and the breathing returns to normal after a couple of minutes it has also happened to me whilst asleep. Yes I'm waiting for the operation been told it will be in a couple of weeks or so I've read so bad reports just hope ice made the correct decision I'm panicking at what could go wrong. I hope you get some answers from your doctor it's a long road to get the operation unless your lucky and can afford to go private.

Moy i have been trying to find out what is wrong with me for years now.In the process of trying to find out I have been given  "happy pills " prescribed lansoprozole Ranitidine given an ultra  sound test an Endoscopy and finally this week I had the 24 monitor process. As a result its yet to be confirmed by my consultant the fella who did this test said that I had an hernia. As for the test boy its the worse one I have had to have so far and i too could not help gagging either. What is now concerning me is how long I have had this hernia and what the chances of it becoming strangled as that can be a fatal condition.I started to chew gum as well but it becane a compulsion so I stopped.I just hope that I can get this sorted out soon and get back to running even though I cycle because I much prefer to run.

Hi the test when you sip water is to check your oesophagus for weakness to see how well it's working at transporting food to the stomach, mine is weak and scared trough stomach acid damage I am therefore having the part operation as a full one could result in me never being able to eat again

Moy yes once it was in I was conscious of it but I could drink and eat OK. I foolishly decided to eat some toffees which were hard to swallow so best avoid them. The water tests were to check I can swallow OK. As I say don't worry too much.
