Longterm effectiveness of PAE

    Hi, the reason nobody has answered this is because we don't know what PAE means.

      Hi, Andrew. Thanks for your note. Actually, there have been a few responses. PAE refers to prostatic arterial embolization. It's a new procedure for treating BPH (enlarged prostate). It seems to work well for most men in the short term, and with none or few of the side effects associated with more conventional therapies (TURP, Green Light, etc.) I was wondering about its longterm effects. The answer apparently is that no one knows--the procedure is too new.

      There have beed a few false dawns in the management of BPH in the last 20 years. Microwave being one of the biggest ones. Hope all goes well for you.

      Thanks, Andrew. I see you have a medical background. Do you have a view on the various BPH treatments? I'm on medication (a combination of Finasteride, Cialis, and low-dose Doxazosin) that is working reasonably well. But at some point I would like to get off the meds, so I've been looking at the different surgical options. PAE and UroLift seem to have the fewest side effects, but neither has much of a track record. Any thoughts you might have would be appreciated.

    I am not a fan of finasteride because it can wreck your sexuality. That is the one I would get off first. What you do depends on your life-style and how much BPH is interfering with that.Cialiis is good medicine.

      I know Finasteride can affect the libido, but in my case that hasn't happened. I do plan to get off it, as well as Doxazosin (which causes light headedness) , as soon as I find the right surgery.
