So here I go. I am a 24 year old woman and About 7 months ago I started suffering from chronic back, chest and neck pain and also palpitations and short of breath went to the doctor and they put me on nexium.. The symptoms would happen after I ate so eventually got referred to a gastro specialist who did an endoscopy and found a small Hiatial hernia causing acid reflux in my oesophagus. He told me to keep taking nexium and slowly Come off it when symptoms were better. Well it never worked I had to quit my job the pain was really bad. I ended up going to a holistic centre and getting some therapy which seemed to help or so I thought.. The pain disappeared but I started noticing a lot of mucus build up sometimes after eating but didn't realise it was acid reflux. I came off the nexium and started eating whatever I wanted again (I still eat pretty healthy no soft drinks or anything) I am not overweight. Fast forward about 6 weeks not being on nexium and I woke up one morning and mid morning felt like I was going to pass out very faint very dizzy, blocked ear right side facial pain it got a little better but have been constantly lightheaded woozy and ear blocked for 12 weeks now. Seen an ent who going reflux and gp is pretty sure it's reflux that's caused this. Took a while to discover.. Off to see another gastro specialist soon. I tried going on an alkaline diet and became very weak and off balance due to not eating enough I am avoiding all main triggers no full fat dairy and no gluten only fish bed is now risen I have gavisconso please don't mention this. Has anyone had this problem? Anyone had surgery? As gp says I might have to do this as no matter what I eat I still get mucus after eating and or all the time and 12 weeks I'm still not well at all!! Also I am on pantoprazole now 20mg for 9 weeks just upped to 40mg for 1 week now

    Hello Charmaine

This doesn't sound like reflux to me but I am not a doctor. I am going in for surgery this month because the haital hernia Is 8.1 cm and causing me problems breathing and foods I can eat without feeling sick are limited. The diet you eat is very important which limits fats spicy foods coffee peppermint and chocolate, no fried foods and very small portions, also eat very slowly. Elevate the head of your bed about 6 inches. I pray dear one you find the solution to your problem and it can be fixed.

One more thing, I will have to be on a liquid diet for 6 weeks after the surgery.

    Sincerely,

    Jo

It's not a common thing to happen no but my gp and my ent have confirmed it. The acid has come up far enough to cause congestion and inflammation in my nose and Eustachian tube blocking my ear and causing in the dizziness and lightheadedness etc.. Just wondering if anyone else has had these symptoms it may not be common but it's happening to me... The worst symptoms to get..I know about the diet and the elevating bed and I'm doing that. I seem to get mucus after eating no matter what even things like Veges in salads cucumber, lettuce, avo not known trigger foods

Dear Charmayne!   Can't believe that I'm writing this, but this type of communication that I am doing on this discussion-type forum is, in itself, very therapeutic for me.  I get so much relief from reading what other people are experiencing and it helps me a lot.   Thank God for these people who, day to day, type their messages.   I, too, have been very frustrated with my health problems.   Perhaps, over the years, I did not truly appreciate the good health that I had--- but I now appreciate the days when I can actually eat!!   Some days aren't so bad- but then a day pops up, and when the vomiting starts, I sink into my "pitty party" and sulk a lot.   Yesterday was one of those days.   But I do manage to eat more solid foods than I once did.... no more just cream-of-wheat, creamed soups, etc.    Am hoping that I can someday go back to eating spaghetti, lasagne, etc.   But can't handle much of that yet.   Have lost weight- am down to 127 lbs. now.

I have just read all the comments and I am now 77 years of age. Told for many, many years that I had small hiatus hernia. I have at last found a gastroenterologist who has diagnosed me with Irritable bowel. I was found to have a helicobacter pylori, was treated for that and still had the pains and could'nt eat much. Had gall bladder remover still not well. Have had so many blood tests and it appears that I have a food intolerance problem. Cannot have chololate, coffee or citrus fruits. No spaghetti bog  Off all dairy now as he is thinking along the lines of casein intolerance which is the protein in dairy. Have become very lethargic and now have iron defiency anemia and having iron infusions. See the gastroenterologist again on Tuesday, hopefully he will have some more answers for me. I have lost 26 kg and am just skin and bone because of the things that i cannot eat. Irritable bowel causes mood swings, depression and anxiety from the pain. Have found that tyhe brearhlessness causes me limited activities. Am not supposed to lift or lift. Not to reach to hang the washing on the line wtc. Do hope that this may help some of you. Would be interested how you go. I know of people who have gone through the hiatal hernia repair and still have no relief. The Ib causes sore throats because it causes eosophagus inflamation.

      Hi thanks for your comment

I'm off to the gastro specialist on Monday so will see what he says about I originally they said it was too small to operate on but since it's now causing so much inflammation my ear is blocked and I'm constantly dizzy to the point where I can barely function or leave the house I'm hoping they help. And if it means surgery I hope I'm one of the lucky ones.. Any food seems to cause the mucus production in my throat so I'm not really sure what to eat but eating nothing caused me to loose weight and make me even worse so I have to make sure I eat enough even if it causes some reflux. At least until I talk to gastro specialist.

Yes I hear what you ar saying. The nasal congestion, hearing problem, dizziness. The stress of the pain causes acidic ph and reflux. I am quite sure that you do not need surgery you need to get your food intolerances sorted. Seriously IBS can cause high  blood pressure, I ate honey sponge roll with coconut and full of cream. 8 hourts later I had what I thought was a bilious attack, got to the Drs and they did an ECG and a triponion blood test and that showed that i had actually had a heart attack. Was taken to Sydney (Australia) by air ambulance and had 2 stents put in. The cardiologist states that IBS causes vascular problems and that is what caused the heart aattack. Do hope that you research everything before opting for hiatal surgery. Most times hiatal hernias are caused by the bowel, bloating from food taking too long to pass through and fermenting in the bowel or constipation. Be really interested to see your results after seeing the gastroenterologist.

I am also in Australia (kiama) yes I have always had problems with ibs as well. I'm just not sure how to fix all my problems as any food seems to irritate me. I've done an elimination diet and ended up really sick on it after 3 weeks and with all the dizziness I do not think i have the energy to limit my food right now and it wouldn't be good for me.

I was thinking about that "elimination diet" that you mentioned.    Thought that perhaps I should attempt that, too.   But am not certain that it would work for me.   Right now I am just trying to eat certain foods that, hopefully, will stay down after I eat them.   It's weird- occasionally I get a small taste for a certain food, but when I eat that food, it feels as though it only goes down so far and then "sticks" at a certain point.   That is so utterly frustrating for me.   A few times, if I get up and walk around, the food seems to dislodge itself- but that doesn't happen very often.    And then, you mentioned the lack of energy- my, yes!   My husband keeps telling me to drink those vitamin-fortified milk shakes so that I get my vitamins.    Guess that I must take his suggestion and drink more of them.   Do you drink any of them and, if so, do you like these?    So far I have had the vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry shakes  and the strawberry seems to taste better for me, even though I've been a chocoholic most of my life.

No I haven't tried them I have been taking a lot of vitamins though e.g multivitamin, iron, magnesium, probiotic, olive leaf, remede for migraine, tumeric

Will have a look for these vitamin drinks do you get from a supermarket? Only problem is I can't tolerate dairy if they have dairy in them although a little should be okay

Just recently bought some "Boost" vitamin dirink--- a rich chocolate flavor.  Not too bad,so will have to start drinking this.   Each bottle has 26 vitamins in it, plus 10g. of protein and 3g. of fiiber.    Need to get more energized- for sure!

If you have food lodging somewhere, you may have a narrowing spot somewhere the food is sticking, I found I do from an upper barium swallow test that was done.
