34 yrs old with pathological/solid cyst

Dear all, i have been recently diagnosed with having a pathological cyst on one of my ovaries and it is about 5cm in size. I am single and did not have any symptoms but my CA125- 35.9 and CA19.9 - 193 reading was high which led me to get my ovaries checked. Now the Dr has recommended for surgery to be done and it will have to be an open surgery/laparatomy. I am quite uncomfortable with this only option given and would like to know if anyone else has had similar diagnosis with other treatment options. Thanks

    Hello Sharon.

    I'm sorry your going through such a tough time. I've been told I have a 5cm complex cyst on my right ovary. My markers were normal 6 wks ago. I've been told to have more scans and bloods on the 27th.

    I've been so scared!!

    All I can say is that if they feel it's necessary to remove the ovary then that's probably the best/ safest option for you. Do you have children? Sorry I don't mean to be nosey. Just wondered if that's a concern for you.

    Have they explained why you need open surgery rather than keyhole?

    What ever happens try not to worry ( I know that's easier said that done).

      Dear Vicky, thanks for your reply. Its kinda weird for me as i had no symptoms at all. My periods have been regular and i hv been very grateful that i dont hv to go through severe discomfort during mensus. But as it says having the cyst can hv nothing to do with the period unless it has grown and affected the blood flow. My worry now is with the recommended treatment. I am not married yet and the Dr still suggested laparatomy because he has to check if the solid cyst is benign or malignant. My family is not too happy with this as well but i understand that he suggested as the 'safest' option for now to be sure. Hence,im here to find out if there coulc be possibly any other alternative and if they should consider doing a laparoscopy instead.

      I have suffered terrible abdominal pain for a long time now but the consultant said the pains are nothing to do with the cyst.

      It's a very good sign that your periods were all normal and regular!

      Do you know if they are removing the ovary too?

      If you don't yet have children, I do know many people who have still been able to conceive successfully with one ovary, so try not to worry on that front. What's important is that they ensure there's nothing sinister going on and you remain happy and healthy.

      I had no idea how common this was until I came on here. This forum has really supported me through one of the toughest times of my life. People have showed me so much support and reassurance. It's amazing!!

      At this point the only thing i know is that a laparotomy is needed and that will mean that they will take out the ovaries and the cyst to check if the cyst is cancerous or not. 

      Glad to know you have found strong support from here. Any operation is risky and with this one it's quite sensitive as well especially when you don't know what to expect during surgery but to just be prepared for what's possible...

    HI Sharon,

    Did you ask for a second opinion at all?

    Did you discover the cyst just through a regular pevlic exam?

      Hi there, I am going to get a 2nd and 3rd opinion once my scan results are out. i did the blood test with tumor markers which resulted with elevated readings and then went to see my gynae who did the ultrasound and confirmed the cyst.

    I had the same diagnosis....a pathological cyst of similar size on tight ovary.  I just had ir removed with laproscopic surgery on tuesday.  When they went in they found it on the tube not ovary and found another cyst they drained on the left side.  The laproscopic surgery is easier to recover from versus what they are advising for you!  I am glad it is gone!

    I wonder why open surgery? I had both Ovaries both tubes and a 7cm cyst removed laparoscopically. I was in and out of the hospital in just a few hours

      me too.. i guess it depends on what the Dr thinks is the best option for now and based on their experiences dealing with such cases. was your cyst a solid cyst?

      From my experience, not all doctors are created equal. It's the same with any profession - there are good carpenters, bad carpenters, good nurses, bad nurses, good teachers, bad teachers, etc.

      hi, i have asked for a 3rd opinion so far this time with a laparascopy specialist. he couldnt quite tell how big my cyst was using the ultrasound and wanted to do a rectal scan but it so happened that i was constipating that day and I have piles so it was too painful to do that. But even according to this dr he would do a laparascopy but there is still a chance that he may need to do an incision if the cyst is too big. So im quite confused at the moment because i am not experiencing any pain at all and all this happened because of the elevated tumor markers from my blood test. on one hand im grateful to have found it earlier but on the other im wondering if i am just asking for trouble because any operation done comes with risks of not knowing what to expect post operation. sad now some people are saying that the cyst could shrink over time with alternative medication but i doubt they understand that this is a solid cyst and on both ovaries...

    I was initially diagnosed via ultrasound with an 8cm dermoid cyst on my left ovary, I had no syptoms other than severe pain across my stomach that lasted 2 days..caused by my ovary twisting. Anyway I was initially told laparotomy with possible hysterectomy but since having an mri I have been advised I'll have keyhole surgery instead (as long as there are no complications). Anyway an mri has revealed that I actually have an endometrioma on my ovary and my womb etc is a sticky mess. Again the gynaecologist recommended a hysterectomy but I've asked him not to go ahead with that unless the sticky mess looks sinister (my tumor marker was high and I guess it's due to inflammation from the endo).

    Have you had a mri?? I would definitely seek a 2nd opinion xx

      Thanks for sharing your experience so far. My dr wasnt able to tell me if it was a dermoid cyst based on the ultrasound done. Can only see solid stuff and according to him there is a 50:50 chance for malignancy. Im going to get a ct scan done but really hoping that a less invasive surgery can be done rather than open. Apparently there is an ovarian cancer diagnosis algorithm but not sure to what extent drs would follow that.
