Digestive Enzymes Confusion

Hi everyone,

I have been suffering from IBS for over 8 years now. My symptoms include indigestion, heartburn, acid reflux, severe bloating, gut spasm, and a lot of flatulence and burping/belching. I was recently recommended to try digestive enzymes to help my stomach digest food, so I have been shopping around for them. But in every shop I go into there seems to be a different brand of digestive enzymes containing a completely different list of ingredients. For example I bought one from Holland and Barrett that contain turmeric and liquorice, and I also bought one called Digestizyme by the brand Lamberts, which has a very different ingredients list.

So now I am just very confused as to which one to take. How can you tell which one is best for you and which one won't work? Has anybody on here tried these brands of enzymes before and can make recommendations?

The best one is the one that makes you feel better. Its as simple as that.

There are so many probiotics on the market that its just a question of trying until you think "This is the one I like, as Im feeling better". You have to give each one a fair trial...eg take for a month , dont just take for a week and then switch to another.

I have found the Healthspan probiotic range are very good. In different strengths. Start with the lowest strength and build up if they suit you.

Or try Actimel, which you can buy in most supermarkets...just one per day. Its a live yoghurt drink, so dont buy if you are dairy intolerant.

Have you tried monitoring your food intake to see if anything in particular causes the problems you describe?

Thanks for the advice. Yes, I have been monitoring my food intake and symptoms for many years now and I know exactly what triggers my flare-ups. The most problematic foods for me are high FODMAP foods like onions and garlic, and all gluten and milk products, fizzy drinks, and also fried food.

hi crescendo, before you crash?!?! this is just to say yakult or kefir milk might help? I only take activia yogurts, the flavours are good and that makes them better than anything.
