Hiatal hernia

I was diagnosed with a small hiatal hernia a year and a half ago. My doctor said if I had surgery it may make it worse. I tend to have flare ups every month or so. I also have constant muscle spasms due to the hernia. I also had reflux surgery back in 1992 so I'm on Aciphex and Ativan which helps because it relaxes my muscles. He also prescribed Bentyl which relaxes the gut but I dont take it with Ativan. I just know I'm miserable. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi Stacy , My doctor prescribed Dexilant 30 mg capsules , one capsule each day . This works . I was @ the time it was prescribed, asperating stomach acid in my sleep. Horrible ! My lungs felt like they were burning & I was choking @ the same time . Now i dont have heartburn , reflux or asperations . I do realise I will eventually have to have surgery for this but , as long as I feel good , this works for me !

Well I've tried every reflux medicine there is. The aciphex has helped some but it doesn't get rid of it. I was fine from February up until recently. I guess I'm having a flare up. Do you have flare ups? My doctor said I'm no where near surgery but this can be very miserable.

    Hi Stacy

I cannot tell you what you should do,

But I had to have surgery, due to GERD severe problems and acid Reflux RX, was not doing anything but causing me to start loosing my hair and high blood pressure.

I had the hiatal hernia and valve repaired 2 months ago. In the recovery stage now, but no More acid reflux, no more GERD, and no more medication. I am 70 years old and it worked for me. Make sure to get EXPERT GI SPECIALIST AND SURGEN. The very best of getting well to you.

I had reflux surgery for my gerd in 1992 and I was scoped again Dec 2014 and he told me where I had surgery it still looked good. He also told me I am far from surgery..he said it would be a good chance surgery for my hernia may make it worse because it will weaken the wall do I dont know what to do.

You should see a better GI specialist. They can do a wrap on your hiatal hernia and that will actually make your stomach better. Do not take my word. Get a second opinion from a different better GI specialist and GI Doctor. Remember it is your body and you need to have a good quality of life, without all those pills. God Bless you!

I've already had the wrap done back in 1992. When my current doctor scoped mein Dec 2014 he said that was still in tact. It's the hernia and my spasms making it worse. I've seen 2 gastro doctors and they both say the same thing.

    Hi Stacy33375

I can sympathise with you, however, I was diagnosed 4 years ago with a sliding Hiatus Hernia, I didn't really know I had it at first but was prescribed Lansoprazole 15mg daily which I take religiously but sometimes wonder what would happen if I didn't take it! Over the last six months or so I have started to get a prolific mucous cough BUT I put up with it as I don't like surgery as I have never had an operation in my life and at age 72 I don't want to start now. I don't get any other symptoms other than this damn cough.

I do suffer from an IPF and under Papworth Hospital but that produces a dry cough and I have to distinguish between the two. However, I am prepared to put up with what I've got but take frequent holidays in Scotland where there is less pollution and I find I am better for it.

    Kind regards

I understand. I dont like surgery either but I've had 15 surgeries and I dont want another one but I am miserable. I've tried everything. I'm hoping this is just a flare up. Keeping my fingers crossed.
