Hiatus Hernia and persistent nausea - any tips?

Posted , 8 users are following.

Hello all,

Over the past three months I started to experience a persistent dry cough and a constant sense of nausea. Over the past month or so, the nausea became more severe, to the point where I have not been able to work and had to go to A&E a few times. I also sometimes have a burning sensation in my throat, caused by reflux, I imagine.

The docs have done every test to find out what is wrong, and I finally found out I have a hiatus hernia. My query is, does anyone have any great tips as to how to reduce or manage the nausea? I have tried Omeprazole but it didn't really work too well.

Also, I am overweight, and have heard that losing weight and improving your posture can really help in reducing symptoms. Has anyone had experience of losing weight being helpful in managing symptoms?

Thanks so much in advance. It's so miserable being nauseous all the time, I am on a mission to find a solution!

I take Zofran for the nausea.

I am having the same symptoms that you do and I do have a small (the way that the doctor put it) Hiatal Hernia, but.... none of the doctors that I am seeing believe that this small little hernia could cause all this discomfort. Like you... I have had just about every test out there. I cancelled the last one, which was a CT with contract of my pancreas. I have been put out and had a scope down the throat , I have had ultra sounds, stool samples, all the blood tests in the world, I think?

I have seen a host of specialist and put on a plethera of drugs. Finally my primary care doctor said, let's try something, and puts me on a drug that motivates the muscles that push and move food through the stomach and I am better! Not all better, mind you but better.

He told me that there is another study that they do that actually measures the speed at which the stomach moves food through and that can cause these symptoms if it isn't happening the way it should.

      Hi Pip1948,

Thank you for your reply - it sounds like you and I are having the same experience. I too am taking Zofran for the nausea and it helps occasionally.

Do you mind me asking what the drug is that helps with pushing food through the stomach? My docs aren't being very proactive in suggesting any medication at the moment.

Also, did you ever have a test for H Pylori? I am awaiting the results of a biopsy from the endoscopy, to check for this, just in case it is the culprit.

Whatever the cause, I feel that I have to find a solution, as the nausea is unmanageable and I have been unable to go to work!

      Kind regards,

      Julia

I had a stool sample test done, and it was negative for H Pylori. When they did the endoscopy they were suppose to do the biopsy but they found no ulcer, so did not do the biopsy for H Pylori. I am interested to hear whether they found an ulcer in your biopsy?

The medication that he gave me is Metoclopramide.

Metoclopramide is used to relieve heartburn and speed the healing of ulcers and sores in the esophagus (tube that connects the mouth to the stomach) in people who have gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD; condition in which backward flow of acid from the stomach causes heartburn and injury of the esophagus) that did not get better with other treatments. Metoclopramide is also used to relieve symptoms caused by slow stomach emptying in people who have diabetes. These symptoms include nausea, vomiting, heartburn, loss of appetite, and feeling of fullness that lasts long after meals. Metoclopramide is in a class of medications called prokinetic agents. It works by speeding the movement of food through the stomach and intestines.

I do not have diabetes, buy the way.

Anyway this is helping with all of it. There are a lot of warnings about this drug, and can't be taken with a bunch of other drugs. But, I wasn't able to go to work either.

I had a lobectomy on Oct. 26 2018, I was off work from that day until the Friday after Christmas, I worked one day and woke up that next day with all this stomach stuff and was back in bed for 3 weeks! That 3 weeks was also filled with one test after another showing nothing and taking forever! So frustrating! But it is all still there, without this medication I wouldn't be functioning.

      I hope that this helps.

Hi JB44, JB is my initials also !!! I totally know what it feels like to have nausea I have the same hernia as you and quite often I feel sick to my stomach right after I eat breakfast in the morning my doctor prescribed Ondansetron 4mg it's a nausea medication and it works so well you can't use it on a daily basis it's really more for people that get nauseous every once in awhile but you can try it and see if it helps you, my doctor prescribes 30 tablets at a time and they usually last me for a few months but since I started taking them on a as needed basis my nausea is a lot better I don't get it every day any more, also I stopped eating anything after 8:00pm and that helped sooooo much I know it's hard to not eat ater 8:00pm especially if you're used to eating dinner at a later time I eat dinner at 5:00pm now and anything I'm going to snack on after dinner I make sure to cram it down my throat by 8:00pm I love to snack at night and watch t.v. so it was so hard to change my eating habits but I swear it has helped me so much it has changed my life now if I want to eat something after 8:00pm I chew a bunch of sugar free gum , I'm so sorry I wrote you a book but I just want to help you. I hope my ideas will help Take Care 😃

This is really to anyone and everyone out there...

Is it me or do the doctors that we see seem to not take our complaints seriously? At least that is how I feel. This can and is sometimes totally debilitating and my doctors seems to just throw some more pills at me and say, " oh well", like not really a serious thing. If it stops me from living my life it is a serious thing.... and it does sometimes.

Hi JB44, I am on zantac and don't feel nausea during the day which I did with omeprazole. At night I usually wake up after 2 hours of sleep with nausea and find that having a small amount of cereal and some gaviscon helps. I find that the drs have been good so far but I feel they are throwing pills at me and telling me I have anixety rather than just sending me for a scan or endoscope. My blood tests have been fine and they don't think it's sinister so not in a rush to refer me but my quality of life has suddenly diminished. You should harass your Drs to get more help, don't give up! Laura

I have all kinds of help from the doctors, and I have had an endoscopy. I have taken all of the meds that you mention and more. I take Zofran for nausea and it is very effective.

I have actually taken myself off of all the antacid meds and now I only take 20mg of pepcid if and when I need it. My primary care doctor put me on a med that helps to move food through your digestive tract and it has done wonders. I honestly think that is my problem considering the improvement on this medication.

It is used for a lot of stomach problems.

I know this is a three year old post, but I just had my Hiatal hernia repaired this week. I am dealing with nausea and was checking in to see if you ever had surgery to repair your issue?

Also, I struggled to lose weight until my doctor told me I needed to lose weight for the operation. It is amazing what going off sugar will do. I am still a few pounds above the 30% BMI, but I lost 25 lbs in two weeks. Now that I know to focus on sugar intake, I know the key to losing weight. It is difficult because I am addicted to sugar.
