I have Oral Lichen Planus and just heard about Gengigel

Posted , 15 users are following.

Has anyone with OLP used Gengigel and did it work.  I found using baking soda to brush my teeth is much better than any toothpaste.  I just can't find anything to help relieve some of the pain on my tongue.  It feels like it has been sliced with a razor blade all the time.  Any help you can give me is welcome.

    Dear Merckx,

I've used baking soda to brush my teeth followed by salt water rinse when I have a lot of painful lesions.

But recently I've been using oral care products with tea tree oil, and taking valacyclovir.

I have gone from 9 active lesions down to 1 in less than a month. And, I have almost no pain.

It could be a coincidence. I could just be in remission.

But, I'm hopeful my new routine is the cause.

      Hi Noni9:

I'm so happy you have found relief.  That is great news.  I tried tea tree straight on my tongue and I ws pain free for a good 24 hours and then it strted up again.  Is Valacyclovir a steriod?  If it is that is what I am trying to avoid.  I heard salt is good to rinse with then heard salt is bad so I'm at a loss at what to do.  Coincidence, remission or maybe a God thing.  Keep up the good work.

Valacyclovir is an anti-viral. I've researched olp and found that herpes viruses and human papilloma virus have been linked to olp. I have hsv2 and hpv. There are few if any adverse affects from valacyclovir. I went to a intectious disease specialist who prescribed 1 gram a day. I take 1/2 in the morning and 1/2 in the evening.

I seen many people post foods you should avoid. However, I haven't found that any food caused my lesions. But, I've found some foods like acidic or spicy can irritate raw lesions. So, I avoid them when I have open sores in my mouth. A solution of warm salt water as a mouthwash is soothing to me.

Praying you find relief. Have you had a biopsy?

PS-I've used tea tree oil directly on my sores and ulcers too.

I use a q-tip and put a drop on it and apply to my lesion. I do that several times throughout the day.

Tea tree oil is an anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-fungal. Each and every one has a different life/reproductive cycle. So, I'm thinking that it would take several applications to be effective. Depending on what is causing your olp would determine what would get rid of it. Anti-viral medications would help if it's caused by a virus. However, they don't "cure" anything they just interrupt the reproductive cycle, and help keep them at bay. When I first got on the support group, everyone was saying olp is an autoimmune disorder and no one knows what causes it. A lady named Karen told me there is a connection between olp and hpv. Have you ever had a positive Pap smear? I researched olp and found there are also links to herpes viruses.

I did have a biopsy about 2 years ago.  I shall try the salt water mouthwash and see how that works.  My gums were so red and inflammed that when I brushed my teeth my gums just bleed out.  Right now it is my tongue that really hurts.  I put some tea tree on a Q-tiop and applied it and found relief immediately for a good 24 hurs and then the hurt came back and no amount of tea tree has stopped the pain.  I'm thinking of tryhing the Gengigel and see if that helps.  It is worth a try.  I hat a revision knee surgery 2 years ago and read it is possible I could have gotten OLP for  some of the pain killers I ws given to take.  It is all a mystery.  I going to pray for your relief from this horrible stuff also.

I have the same problem with my gums. They bled when i brushed. I started a small dose of doxycycline and it has stopped the bleeding gums. OLP is still there, still painful, but thankfully the bleeding has subsided and am able to brush my teeth without too much pain.

I just did a search on Tumeric Ointment being good fr OLP.  Have you ever looked into that option?  Plus it was suggested to me that I go see a Pathuropath.  I"m trying to find a good one.  I've been to 5 different types of doctor and all they want to give me  steriods. There has to be something natural we can take at least to control the pain issue.

Dear Mercky, so sorry for your suffering.

Olp is so painful. I found out recently that olp falls into the category of denistry under US Medicare and doesn't qualify for coverage; therefore, doctors aren't interested in providing coverage, because there is no money for it.

The research I've done links it to various virus strains, not medication. However, I think medications can exacerbate olp. I recently was on steroids for 3-1/2 months for ulcerative colitis. My olp worsened as a result. But, it seems to have improved with anti-viral treatment I'm getting for herpes virus 2. I have a history of anal cancer caused by human papilloma virus, which is the primary cause of cervical cancer and positive Pap smears. My main concern right now is getting some form of oral cancer. Some research shows increased incidence of oral cancer in olp patients. It's a puzzle I'm trying to solve.

Dear Noni9:   I am so sorry for all you have been going through.  I saw a video on laser surgery for OLP.  Stumbled into it somehow searching for possible cures for the OLP so I called my primary docor to see if there were laser places loclly and there is none.  I've noticed my dentist doesn't seem to be concerned or interested in helping me find any relief.  We just have to keep searching and trusting that God will help us with this horrible stuff.

      Hi Noni9:

My chiro suggested I try putting baking soda on my tongue in paste form.  That is hard as the saliva makes liquid out of it real quick.  I have tired it 2 or 3 times a day but didn't have any good results.  My tongue is rw all the time.  No fun at all.

We just have to keep searching and searching.  I came upon a site that does laser surgery on the OLP with good results.  Finding someone to do it is another thing.

      Hi Mercky

Sorry to hear you have this, how long have you had it for!!! It's good we have this site to talk to each other that way we are not suffering alone, and there's some lovely ladies to talk to. Have you ever had an abnormal smear test caused by hpv, this is linked to olp and also other viruses, how old are you mercky?

    • Posted

      Dear Merkcy,

I don't know if baking soda would help, but it probably wouldn't hurt???

Maybe you could try just putting a baking soda paste on your tongue, keeping your mouth closed and just letting the saliva build up for as long as possible then spit it out. Do that a few times a day. See if it helps. Let me know. God bless.

      Hi Karen:

I'm sorry you have OLP also.  I've had it a little over 2 years.. Icame out of no where and I had no clue what it was.  It is a blessing to have this site and talk to some really sweet ladies and find out we are not alone with this thing that has attacked us.I've not had an abnormal pap smear so I don't know what triggered it.  I'll be 76 tomorrow March 16.  How old are you.  I kept putting baking soda on my tongue through the day yeterday and it seems to help quite a bit.  Coconut oil also seems to help.

I'm 58 almost 59 but I was diagnosed about 20 years ago was my dentist that found it and then didn't have any problems!!!! Just recently it started to bother me!!! I was diagnosed with it around the same time I had an abnormal smear. Have you ever had hysterectomy or anything !!!

      Hi Karen:

Thank you for the happy birthday.  That was a nice surprise.  I was doing better today and   then we went out to eat and I ate something that ruffed my mouth up a bit.  That was disappointing.  No problems with it  20 years ago and now it started jp.  That had to be upsetting.  I had a hysterectomy in 1973.  Could that be the cause of this horrible stuff.?  I've probably had 11 or 12 surgeries in my life.  This OLP seemed to start not long after I had a knee revision back in August 2015.  Someone mentioned it could be from the pain killers.  I have no clue as this is such a shock and new to me.  I never even heard of OLP or any kind of LP.

I made sure what I ate was not hot, spicy or acidic.  Then I had ice cream  had  best peanuts covered in honey and sesame seeds and I ate way too many and the sides of my mouth and back of the gums really hurt.  It all hurts.  I haven't refovered from the revision surgery on my right knee as yet.  The doctor tole me 1 to 2 years and it will be 2 years August 2017 and I don't think my knee will ever be pain free.  I live in the USA.  Where are you from?  Does this OLP every go away or is it with us for life.  Have a lovely weekend.  We need to just keep trusting and praying for each other and all the people on this site suffering from this horrible thing.

      Hi Noni9:

I've had 5 surgeries on my right which started with a fall in 2005 which tore the Menicus.  Later I had to have a partial knee replacement, 6 months later it came loose and then I had to have a total knee replacement.  I had terrible pain from that and the doctor went back in and discovered he had left a forgein object in my knee.  He took that out but I had a lot of pain on the side of my pain so I went to another doctor and he discovered the previous doctor had put the wrong size replacement in and it was also tilted.  So the new doctor had to revise and make right the mess the first doctor creted.  He did the very best he could and I will probable have pain and discomfort in my knee.   Peanuts have never bothered me before but I thing with the seeds on them they were just too ruff for my mouth.  You seem like a very sweet lady.

      Blessings back to you :-)))

      Dear Mercky,

When I was a young child, my mom used camphophinique on me for sores on the outside of my mouth and alum for inside.

I don't think either are supposed to be ingested.

I think the camphor is petroleum based.

Personally, I prefer tea tree oil, because it's plant based.

But, I haven't used the camphor in many many years

    • Posted

      Dear Noni9:

I use to use it when I had cold sores on my lips and just flasted on tht it might work on the olp.  I seemed to clear up the sores so I thought that maybe it would help witjh what we have.  Do you have those ugly white patched on your tongue?

The olp erally made be very angry this morning and I just wanted to scream but it wouldn't make any difference or make it go away.  I contacted Tea Tree and asked is it is oky to use the te tree oil straight in our mouth and they didn't that that was a good idea as it is to strong but suggested I dilute 2 drops in an 8 oz glass of warm water and gargle with it a few times a day.  The diluted didn't seem to help much and using it straight I only got relief one time on a really sore spot on my tongue using it straight for a good 24 hours.  I'm beginning to think we are fighting a losing battle.  Have a great weekend.

      Blessings xxx

      Dear Noni9:

I just did another search on the computer for the OLP and found out we can use hydrogen peroxide as a rinse a few times a day but I don't remember if we take it straight or dilute with water.  Also type in your search engine Oral Lichen Planus - British Association of and red that article.  It was very good and interesting.  That is the article I read about the hydrogen peroxide.  Also there is an article on Tumereric ointment and will try and find that article again and send you the link.

      Dear Mercky,

I think the camphor used to dry out my cold sores too.

I just like the idea of tea tree oil, because it's natural. It's antibacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-viral.

I put a drop on a qtip and hold on a single sore for about 10-20 seconds. One drop and one q-tip for each sore. I do that several times a day.

I get white cloudy spots on my tongue. My tongue burns and is very sore, swollen and painful before and after the spot appears. I have a new one on the side of my tongue this morning. And I have a more ulcerated one under my tongue I've had for about 4-5 weeks. We're watching that one; and if it's still there on the 12th will biopsy. But, 4 weeks ago I had nine separate erosive lesions spread between the inside of my lips, gums, tongue and check. They all started out with white rims, but many of the centers eroded. All are painful, especially at the beginning. I woke up a couple of times during the night last night due to a painful, swollen tongue.

      Dear Noni9:

I am so sorry what you are going through.  This OLP seemd to just do what it wants to without wrning.  I heard about a state that does laser surgery on the OLP  but not here in California.  I am so surprised there isn't more research to help olp patients.  No one seems to want to deal with it except to give us steriods.  If we so no to that option the doctors drop us like a hot rock.  I pray you don't have to have the biopsy and that it goes away on its own.  This is a stupid question but are yu under a lot of stress .  I read when we get upset and stressed over things it makes the olp worse.  How can we not stress with this stuff going on in our mouth. I"m going to go apply some tea tree now and give it another try.

Yes, I'm under a lot of stress. I feel the increased olp symptoms are related to that.

I found that olp falls under the dentistry category.

Insurance doesn't pay for dental, therefore, no one is interested in treating it unless it affects certain soft tissue areas covered under medical.

I have Medicare and Medicaid. The ENT guy I went to said he thinks I should get a referral to the state dental college for treatment and then Medicaid should pay and I could get treatment.

Dearest Mercky, so sorry about your knee. What a nightmare, the first doctor seems totally incompetent. How awful for you. I know it was very painful. I had a total knee replacement about 4 years ago. Dr. Beuhler here in Bend. He used "gps" to position it. Cost an extra $500. Well worth it. I haven't had any problems since.

I read the website you suggested, and looked at all the links at the bottom. They mention Hep-C, but not herpes viruses and hpv. I have herpes simplex virus 2 and hpv. I've read they are both linked to olp. I've been tested for hep-c, but was negative.

You seem very sweet as well. Thank you. I also take Metformin. Going to see if that's related.

I went to Lichen Sclerosus form as someone on there found out fasting may reset our auto-immune system and possible we can get rid of the OLP and other health issues.  It has something to do with the white blood cells.  Go to that form and look for tomsbestfriend on there as there  is a lot of info.    Maybe this is  step to getting rid of this stuff.  Where do you live?  I"m in Southern California.

One of the things we have to avoid is stress and that is so hard.  That is like telling us we can't cry.  Did I tell you about OLP being treated with Laser surgry?  I asked my primary doctor but she told me it isn't done is California.I"ve been to 4 doctors in different fields and all they want to do for me is steriod pills or gel to rub on.  I've heard about too many horrible side effects and son't want any part of it  .Lavender essential oils are good to calm us town and help with sleep.  Put a few drops in the palm of your hand  sit in your favorite chair and keep smelling it.  Maybe that will help a bit.  I am so sorry you are going through this.  It sure helps having people to talk to on the computer.  You are so sweet and I feel like I have known you for quite a while.  My prayers are with you.  I have never been on a forum and this is very nice.

      Hi, Mercky,

      I live in central Oregon.

The "gps" was some kind of machine that determined where to put my artificial knee, how to place it with accuracy.

Can you go to another surgeon and get another opinion. It sounds like that one really messed up your knee. I get so frustrated with physicians like that.

I will look for that forum.

      Dear Mercky,

Yes, you told me about the laser surgery.

Sorry if it seemed like I was ignoring you.

I just hesitated to be negative.

My gut rebels at the word surgery. That's because, I feel like my olp sores/lesions/ulcers come from inside. I don't think any kind of cutting will eliminate the cause. I feel like it would only compound the problem. I think the cause of olp is systemic. I think some foods and medications can aggrevate it, but I think it's something that resides in a system, maybe nerves, blood, liver, spleen, colon, not sure what exactly. I think it can lie dormant, and then resurface due to stress or some other stimulus. But, I balk at the word "surgery".

So sorry. If you feel it would work for you, go for it.

      Hi Noni9:

I'n not sure about how long prolonged is but the person telling about it said they would be doing the first two days of each month.  No reason for the days picked except it just may be easier to remember and only doing it for 2 days.  Also said they drink water, coffee tea all day long.  I've never heard about it helping the white blood cells and it is worth a try.  I haven't been eat much of late  and my mouth seems to be btter.  Staying away from my favorite foods which are Mexican, salsa, Indian Curry.  Makes me sad I can't eat them anymore but I don't need the sore mough and infflammation.  Another favorite is Hummus I make with lemon and I eat it by the spoonfuls but dicovered that was a really bad no, no and it took my mouth quite a few days to get better.  It is hard to fast.  I can goo with out food when I get busy and don't take the time to eat but when you know you can't eat the fasting is really hard.  I'm going to give it a try the first of April (hopefully)

I'm glad we have met on the forum.  Have a great day!

      Dear Noni9:

I passed through Oregan in 1969 on my way to Canada.  We went through at night so I missed the beutiful coast line.  We are sort of neighbors being the coast side of California.

I don't know if my doctor used the GPS machine.  I really don't want to go through another surgery on my knee.  Sometimes I think with the 5 surgeries on it it is full of scar tissue.  The first surgeon I had was horrible.

When I woke up from surgery my knee was in terrible pain but I couldn't keep harping on it in recovery as they would think I ws nuts coming out of surgery.  When I had the partial done it hurt but nothing like the total he had to do.  PT at home was horrible and I couldn't do the exercises, then I ws sent to PT and the pain was horrible and I heard the PT tell another PT that I was a drama queen.  My doctor kept telling me my knee was fine and that he had a patient who was up in two days with no problems.  Since I fell at work I was under Workmen's omp and was assigned a nurse to go with me to the doctor.  She stepped up and told the doctor she wanted a scope done on my knee and I could see him cringe and said OK.  Low and behold he found a foreign object, showed it to me and never said I am so sorry.  That solved one problem.  The other pain ws still there and I sent to another surgeon and he discovered the replacement part was too big and put in at an angle.  Every time I moved the pain shot through my knee and up my leg.

I read somethere tht maybe my OLP came from the different pain medicine I was on.  I'll probably never know if that was the case or not.  The surgeon who fixed the mess is really good and has a lot of 5 stars after his name and a lot of happy patients.  With the mes the first doctor did he really did a good job correcting the mess.

My prayers are with you also.

I'm so sorry you have had so much pain. I know how it feels to be in so much pain and be dismissed as a drama queen. It is one of the worst things that can happen to you. That happened to me after a spinal fusion surgery that caused Bi-lateral sacral fractures.

I checked out tomsbestfriend on the lichen sclerorus forum. I also checked out the Dr/Professor who developed the Fasting protocol. The Doctor's company sells special food products to use in conjunction with the Fasting protocol. I asked that they call me. I'll let you know what I find out.

Have a blessed day. Praying for your foot surgery.

I think insurance payments determine what kind of treatment dentists and doctors provide. Check to see if your insurance pays for the laser surgery. If they do, they should be able to refer you to a doctor who does it.

Hope you are well this afternoon.

      Hi Noni9:

I guess I missed or didn't see about the special food products.  Did you google that?  I"ll be interested to hear what they have to say .

How many fusions did you have in your spinal surgery.  I am so sorry you have been through so much pain.  When did you have this surgery done and how ae you doing with it today.  I understand why yu don't want to go through any more surgeries.

You have a blessed day also.  Thanks for your prayers for my foot surgery.  Hopefully I won't he to have it.  You are in my prayers.

      Dear Mercky,

      Thank you for your prayers.

A year ago April 4, I had an L4-S1 spinal fusion.

The pedicule screws that were screwed into my sacrum caused bilateral sacral fractures.

I was in excruciating, debilitating Pain for about 9 months.

Now, a year later I still have unhealed sacral fractures at S1&S2.

I am still unable to walk or stand more than 3-7 minutes at a time due to pain.

I have a reclining wheelchair that enables me to take medical transport to/from medical appointments.

      I am very frustrated.

During the height of my ordeal, The stress caused a year long flareup of ulcerative colitis; took steroids 3-1/2 months, which led to a flare up of herpes simplex virus 2, and throughout it all I've had painful olp: painful, swollen tongue, lesions and ulcers.

Sometimes I get depressed. I'm very frustrated.

      Hi, Mercky,

I googled Professor Longo and Fasting.

One of the links that came up was a company he founded.

It is my understanding he endorses the products they sell.

      They haven't called me back.

I'll let you know if they call.

      Have a great day.

Dearest Noni9:  I am so sorry and sad about the horrible stuff you have been through.  I had no idea what you have been dealing with.  Do you have help at home.  It is understandable the depression and frustration you have.  My knee pain is a drop in the bucket compared to what you have been going through and dealing with.  Will the sacral fractures at S1&S2 ever heal.  What does your doctor say?  I pray for you but now I know what to pray for and if it is okay with I'll ask for prayer for you at our Bible Study class on Tuesday mornings.  You have such a sweet gental  spirit even with all you have been and are goping through.  We serve a God of miracles and we have to holed onto that.

      God Bless you

      Sandy

      Dear Sandy,

Thank you for your prayers and sympathy.

And, yes, please pray for me at Bible study.

I believe all healing comes from God.

So, the more prayers we offer the better.

My doctors don't really have a plan. I see an orthopedic surgeon next week to see if he can come up with a strategy to stimulate bone growth.

I'm just living one day at a time.

Today, I went to a new counselor, need to work in PTSD caused by the 6 week period before they diagnosed my bilateral sacral fractures and when they kept telling me to walk more everyday. They just ignored my pleas for help, and I haven't healed emotionally.

Sorry to be so needy and negative.

      Thanks for your support.

      You are in my prayers.

      Dear Noni9:

Healing does come from God and I will ask for prayer Tuesday at Bible Study.  We cn never have enough of prayers.

No way are you needy or negative.  Most doctors have no empathy for their patients.  When we tell them we hurt then can't believe that as they make no mistake.  If it wasn't for the nurse I had assigned to me by Workmens Comp I would probably still have that foreign object in my knee.  My doctor did n't believe me when I kept telling him of pain I was having.  In fact, he was quite annoyed.  A sweet friend of mine in her early 90's had fallen, was taken to the hospital,  no x-rays taken, sent to a nursing home, put through PT, kept telling the nurses how much pain she was having in her leg and hip, made her walk and go to PT.  Then one day a nurse helped her to her room and she collasped, took her to x-ray and discovered she had a broken hip.  I can't remember how many weeks she suffered with that pain and no one believed her.  So they did surgery on her hip.  It is really hard to find a good doctor who really cares for their patients.   So, you are not needy or negative.  Don't back down.

What happened to you that you have the bilateral sacral fracture.  If you rather not talk about it I understand.

      Blessings on you.

I checked with my primary doctor about dentists doing the laser surgery and she told me we don't have any dentist that do that here.

      Hi Noni9:

I have a question.  Being new to a forum I don't understand some of the rules.  One or two of my discussions were deleted and I don't know why or what I did wrong.  Can you explain this to me.

Thanks and have a great day.

      Hi, Mercky,

      Hope you are feeling better.

About the rules, all I know is you can't really recommend products by brand names, or make claims about treatments or cures.

      What were your posts about?

Pray your have relief from pain.

      Blessings ~
