I've just been diagnosed with Frozen Shoulder - HELP!

Posted , 7 users are following.

Hi - I've just found this forum after Googling about Frozen Shoulder so hope this is active with lovely people who can offer advice.

I've been getting pain from my shoulder since the Spring this year - no trauma - no injury - just unexplained on-set of pain. Initially I thought it was posture related as work at a desk all day.

I initially went to GP for advise who referred me to NHS physio.

I've been experiencing gradually more pain and less movement to the point now where the lack of movement is really impacting my life. I can't wear a bra, can barely reach to wash my hair and getting dressed or undressed is exhausting. Any sudden movement - even the slightest knock on my affected arm or shoulder is enough to send me yelping to the ceiling 😦

I had a cortisteroid injection approx 8 weeks ago - but that made my pain much much worse. I had an MRI scan 2 weeks ago - but still waiting to hear results of that.

In my desperation I went to a private physio this week - who diagnosed me with frozen shoulder - hearing that this can take up to 2 years to heal was depressing news indeed.

I'm struggling to work out at the moment how much to push myself with exercises. I have purchased a shoulder pulley on Physio's recommendation but even the smallest stretch is incredibly painful so it seems a bit pointless at the moment. Physio told me I could do no more damage to my shoulder and although exercise may ache (understatement!!!) it wont do any harm. I've read conflicting advice on this and wondered if anyone can offer advice here?

Also - how have all you managed the pain?? I'm on Naproxen at the moment and it seems like it's doing very little for me. I've heard others using codeine but I'm not keen on that if this is really going to take 2 years - I can't be taking codeine for that long!!! Private physio has recommended a 2nd cortisteroid - but after the first one I'm very very nervous about doing that again as it caused (or seemed to) so much extra pain for me last time.

Would love to hear any positive stories or advice form others who have experienced this dreadful condition.

    hi lorraine

yup it hurts aches like hell doesnt it , if tou look on the posts ( i have lots ) . just finished a 36 month marathon on both shoulders.

    .

i am a carpenter and i could not even reach the top hinge of a door. immediate pain relief get a aircast ic ice machine. google it. you have to get the ic one with a motor. instant relief while on. but back in ache after. i used it each evening after work. cost about £120

    .

steroid jabs were waste of time to me only lasted 5 weeks. if you have the money £600 ish. including the referal go private and get the joint hydrodilation. mass volume injection. does it hurt. as much as a major ache.

    .

i have had 4 two on each shoulder over the 3 years of torture. you will come out and clap above your head !!!!!. yup and it keeps the ache away for me 6 months.

    .

i have gone through brutal physio as well to break the scar tissue. please keep a healthy mental focus as i can wear you down. its such a personal quiet horrendous thing to have. people just dont get it.

    .

also look after your other shoulder. i wore it out over compensating and it froze as well.

    .

i took the hard way and had the capsule cut 360° and separated the joint after 30 months.

    .

keep positive stay strong its a personal war on that joint

    hi lorraine

know i posted a few days ago. it is very quiet on this chatroom since it was upgraded.

    .

i kept on moving my shoulder all the time in the freezing stage. i did my best to move the shoulder all the time even with early physio.

    .

muscle spasms were my problem all over my back and neck. we worked on these all the time. a big cause of head aches and referred pain.

    .

do you have clicky neck yet. seems to come with the problem. i found supporting the arm in a pillow gave it something to do. and kept away some night aches which will drive you mad.

    .

google exercises for FS and do the diligently. its hard its long

    .

i counted up the prescriptions for paracetamol from the doctor. it was at about 550,000 mg. how can that be good to the stomach.

    .

in the end i struggled through out the day and only took 1000mg to go to bed. and still lay awake most of the night.

Hi Lorraine and Colin. I too am suffering with FS and have been for about 8 weeks now. It is hell on earth. My shoulder problems started earlier this year with my shoulder feeling like it was coming out of the socket with lots of crunching and clicking and grinding.

I'm now at the stage where I can't get my arm around my back to fasten my bra, getting dressed is challenging (and exhausting) personal care like hair washing/drying, washing under arms are so difficult.

I had a steroid injection and for the first 2 days it was sheer agony, everything I read suggests this is normal inflammation following the steroid. 2 days later and I started to feel some relief at bedtime. prior to that I was unable to sleep, tried to prop it up with pillows, stretch it out etc. The nights were endless and I was delirious with pain and lack of sleep. Me and my husband took in turns sleeping in the spare room. I can manage most days with no pain relief but at bedtime I take codine/paracetamol 8/500mg. They help me get off to sleep but as soon as the 4-5 hrs passes the dull ache kicks in along with the restlessness and disturbed sleep.

I'm experiencing carpal tunnel and weak wrist in the affected hand along with spasms and general wrist weakness.

the physio suggested if no better after Xmas that I should be referred to an orthopedic specialist.

I have tried to exercise using ones from the physio, my own from You Tube and also some light weights but none of these are helping with my ROM.

I'm beyond despair with it, it is affecting my general wellbeing and state of mind despite trying to stave positive and focused. I've just started a new job too and uts hard work putting on a brave face each day with all of the above going on 😦

      .

total agree with ya. its hard and personal. people just dont get it. the pain gnaws at toy day and night.

      .

you have to keep positive. glad ya husband is helping getting out the way. i was such a grumpy sod at times and my wife had to reel me in and tell me off.

      .

as i said above the best injection was the hydrodilatation. it was instant. on the dark days i was on 4000 mg paracetamol and 96 codeine and still lay awake half the night.

      .

also sort out the spasms in the muscles as that is a big source of aches. even last night i has to support my arm with a pillow ( thought i had this in the bag after surgery and that was brutal .

      .

let me know how you are going. it seems i am the only one to reply to messages any more.

      .

its good to share ideas on how to beat this

      me again

are you in the UK or other. i purchased a electro magnetic brace that targeted the inner joint and warmed it up. not like other ones that warm your skin only.

      .

i used it to kick start the joint each morning and have a warm start. it was from the mendme shop and it was a t-shellz cuff. for me it helped. did not get it better

      .

then the cold brace that was an aircast ic brace. i did throw a lot of tech into the problem. have a laugh nothing really cured it. it just masked the pain to give you some relief.

      .

i use to listen for the first bird call each morning

hi Colin, its good to be in touch. I'm in the UK, where are you?

Today has been hell, I dropped something in my bedroom yesterday and totally forgot about Mt shoulder so my immediate instinct was to reach out and save it. it totally wrenched my shoulder and I almost passed out with the pain. I'm no drama queen either.

I'm really suffering for it today.

I'm OK with most of the day to day stuff although I keep experiencing wrist weakness where it feels like my wrist wants to drop and I struggle with the dexterity, not sure if that's normal?

I'm exercising it each day and using small weights but so far no joy. Steroid injection 30th November and has made bed times slightly better but in terms of ROM I'm no further on.

I was also diagnosed with Fibromyalgia in June this year and am going through the Menopause so to say life feels pretty grim at the moment is an understatement.

Its a lonely place being ill especially when there is no visible evidence to show people.

Well you look OK so you must be!!

    Craving my healthy life back.

who do you speak to about the hydrodilatation injection? Is that the same as the steroid?

I had to delay my covid booster because of the steroid too. Having that on Friday 👍

      hi looby

( whats ya real name lol)

if you have the finances google your nearest nuffield or spires or bupa. look up orthopedic consultant and male contact via their medical secretary and ask for an appointment reference hydrodilatation .

      .

my consultation was £150. took him 5 mins to diagnose ( you know what you cant do. just show him).

      .

i was booked for the injections 4 days later. being as sado the operation code is w9030. it cost me £500. he made me do a over head clap " zero pain ". a tear to my eye. i danced out the hospital.

      .

worth it , every penny. slept that night like a puppy . and it give you ROM back again. you can feel the joint tear and pop. so cool.

      .

in the three years and one week since it started i have had 2 in each joint. i ruined my good shoulder over working it to compensate. took 7months to freeze the good joint as well.

      .

just got over the last one 4 weeks ago as the tendon ( supraspinatus ) just will not settle. he stuffed me full again which held up me booster for C19.

      .

its the referred pain that is an issue. i ache everywhere except the joint lol. thats fine now.

      .

i asked about where you live as the toys i got carried import charges into the UK.

      .

we did experiment with sport taping. i had my shoulder very heavily taped. which held the muscles in spasm in place and assisted

      .

imagine the white lines across my shoulders. you lot moan about bikini lines. i has 50mm tracks over me shoulders. and i had to shave the shoulders and back as the sport physio hurt more so pulling at me hairs out.

      .

please look after your other shoulder as it is so easy to have bi lateral frozen joint. and yes its so personal and it haunted me day and night

      .

sport rock sauce was good at warming the joint and giving you a fuzzy feeling as was uddermint. yes cow udder mint to disinfect the teats. its very warm but cold ???. and ya smell like a stick of rock. google them.

      .

hope this helps. physio tomorrow "again ". more stretching and squirming like a pig to slaughter. i found being aggressive helped me. but others disagree. you have to find what makes you feel better.

My other shoulder is starting to crunch and I hear the tendons snapping. I'm also experiencing carpal tunnel in my hands and wrists, did you have that?

I've just made an appointment with a chiropractor, see him Monday.

The chap who gave my steroid said if no better after 6 weeks (30th Nov) they would refer me to an orthopaedic consultant.

Sounds like you have researched and done your homework.

Great to know there is light at the end of the tunnel. I have never been so low and miserable as I am now.

My name is Michelle by the way.

      hi Michelle

      .

missed the post about the steriod is it the same as hydrodilatation.

      .

well kind of. its a mass volume injection through a fine line placed in the joint. you are jabbed first to numb the area.

      .

first is dye to show the radiologist is in the right area

      .

then anaesthetic is injected into the heart of the GH joint.

      .

then a long lasting steroid next

      .

then 40 -50 ml saline to blow the joint apart

      .

it hurts less than one of our zinggers of pain we get.

      .

if you get referred push for it. it will give so much relief.

      .

as i first posted to the first person. record your progress as physio and you can compare. all i could feel was pain. reviewing progress gave me such a boost.

      .

like you i had to defer my booster due to the steriod jab. i got mine last friday. made me feel crappy monday and tuesday. and the got a positive test yesterday ( sod ). feels like a cold at the moment but has ruined christmas with family.

      a soggy colin lol

Hi Colin, thanks for taking the time and effort to get back to me. sorry to hear your covid news, I hope you're doing OK?

I haven't been great after mine on Friday either but today is easier.

So in terms.of your FS did you ever see a chiropractor? I visited one today! I have never experienced anything quite like it.

I have another appointment with him in January, he insisted he was confident he can fix me. Not sure how I feel about the whole thing and would be interested to hear your thoughts.

      I hope you're doing OK

      Michelle

      he can fix ya lol

ho by the way this omicron strain. seems i have dodged the bullet. did not know i would have had it unless i had done the LFT. all good but a ruined christmas with so much food to arrive and no one to eat the stuff.

      .

what is he aiming to do. as the whole thing about what we have is the hardening / thickening of the shoulder capsule and internal scaring in the capsule. .

      .

i / we tried i vain to break the capsule scaring at a sport physio place ( still going there now). you cannot. i had some brutal sessions there.

      .

only medical intervention made any headway . injections and surgery with me. we carried on with sport physio just to maintain ROM and ease the spasms in the muscles.

      .

i tried osteopath during lock down as a plan B as they were allowed to stay open . he started to massage me bum muscles ( kinky huh ) as they were linked to the bigger back muscles " hey its me shoulder that hurts" not me lower back.

      .

please try him. i am not an expert by far. it may help your shoulder straight away. with me i bailed out from mine and saved me money.

      .

interested to know how it helps and if anyone else here reading this they can take away your results to help them self. it all adds to the greater cause.

      .

i just wish other people would share on here now. people like posting but not interacting any more.

      .

its nice bouncing back and forth to you finding new options

Hey Colin good to hear you're OK although shame about the grub 😆

The cynical side of me says of course he is going to say he can fix you, it's a dead cert business model. £70 for my first session and then £40 a pop every session after that. There was a lot of popping going on too, it was agony. strangely enough though I wasn't I agony at bed time last night and managed with ibuprofen rather than co-codamol?

I'm sick of overthinking my every move and crunch and tablet taking but I know its all necessary.

He was very much against steroid injections claiming they can do more damage than good, again, of course he will say that. The success of my steroid injection certainly wouldn't have led me to his door.

It's funny you say about massaging your bum cheeks, this chap mentioned about me stripping down to bra and pants so he could have a good look at me 😆

Joking aside it made me feel uncomfortable and it never happened.

I had some intense deep tissue massage whilst there from his physio and then he got to work trying to straighten my bones. Seems his arm is to try and release the locked joint capsule by manipulation?

Hiya Colin, sorry I haven't seen your posts!

Oh man what a set back!

You were doing so well? What ROM have you got currently and how are you managing the pain?

Mine is so so, not seen an orthopaedic yet. Been back to a neurologist (long story) and having an EMG. Should get that in about 6 weeks as going through the NHS.

Got a lot of movement back in my arm but still limited. Can't get it behind my back to fasten my bra. That will be when I'm fixed. I'm taking Naproxen twice a day and managing to sleep now so whilst they're small victories, they're victories none the less.

Got a F2F with the GP at the end of Feb so will seek out orthopedic referral then.

What's caused your set back then? 🤔

      Hi Michelle

when all this started 5th dec 19. i had the standard frozen shoulder massive zinggers and rubbish ROM.

      .

with the aid of hydrodilatation and truck loads of physio i gained back about 50% ROM. it was the dreaded night aches that i could not shake off. you know the score. lay awake all night suffering .

      .

i think it may have been my job. heavy work. roll on 28 months ACR and SAD operation. i had 95% range back. i managed to keep about 80%. massive post op physio and exercise regime.

      .

now 10 months post op. in the last 2/3 weeks the joint has fallen apart. to be honest i have just wasted 38 months and £8000. exc operation costs. to now have to start a different journey with tendon surgery.

      .

have been watching tendonesis operations to understand WHY. I am so upset to now have to prepare for a major operation . just been looking at comfy shoulder immobilisers. if i have to wear one for 6 weeks i want a nice one. already have the dojoy ultra sling 4. from last time.

      .

all strapped up now. spent 4 hours on the ice machine last night. getting naproxen into me system. got oral steroids to take and mass pain killers.

      .

movement is getting shocking. hard to push gear stick from 2 to 3. and 4 to 5. even crossing me body turning the wheel is painful now. completely different pain to frozen shoulder. more sharp and instant.

      .

i am going thursday to see specialist to see if i am viable to have carporial shockwave treatment and tendon sheath injections.

      .

      EVERYONE READ THIS PLEASE

      .

understand when your are offered a surgical option for frozen shoulder. this may happen to you as well.

      .

you may be well on your way recovering from FS. i was not i was stuck with a severe cases and my job was suffering.

      .

PLEASE BE CAREFUL AND WEIGH UP THE OPTIONS.

      .

i think my FS chances fell butter side down. and i have to recover again i think i have had every treatment possible. i love these youtube slots to cure you in one session.

hey Colin, crikey you really are up against it, I feel for you pal.

I seem to be past the really painful stage, I'm sleeping at night without pain relief but I still haven't got full ROM back. I've also lost muscle and experiencing weakness in my wrists, like carpal tunnel.

I went to see the neurologist for the 2nd time in 12 months the last week, as I've been experiencing some pretty nasty symptoms the last year and was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia. I'm waiting to have an EMG to help rule out anything sinister, although the neurologist doesn't think its necessary.

He never examined my shoulder or hands though even when I explained about my FS and weakness.

My ROM has improved but I've still a long way to go. Seeing my GP at the end of the month and will ask for an orthopaedic referral.

How do you keep going Colin? on your darkest days? You must be a strong guy to push through and I'm.not talking physically strong. How are you managing to work as a carpenter under the circumstances?

Sending healing and positive vibes your way.

      I CAN FEEL IT

      YUP THE POSITIVE VIBES LOL

      hi Michelle

      .

its been hard mentally. as you know on a site there is a general mickey take if someone harps on about an injury.

      .

i tend to keep quiet in our small gang " poor old colin poor old arm ". its such a personal injury as no one can see it. i think a shoulder injury is one of the worst ever to get.

      .

some days past if i had to hand a door i would not even be able to reach the top hinge with a chisel .

      .

i get home and plug in my aircast cryo unit just sink back and let the ice water flow over the shoulder. it is 100 times more powerful than pain meds. and relax.

      .

my eyes are showing sign as they are so red due to lack of sleep ( we have all been there ) and pain.

      .

like you the physio has notices mass of atrophy around the shoulder. i have to risk assess every movement to avoid pigging it off.

      .

      really push for the hydrodilatation.

lay it on really thick. i mean REALLY THICK lol. its the best non evasive thing the actually works. and there is no complications.

      .

and you have to keep positive. talk to your partner. tell them about the pain and the days that get to you.

      .

now going to spend the rest if the evening on ice for the next 6 hours. it was the best buy ever for pain .

      .

keep me updated on your war as well. will post on thursday when i see the specialist about the shockwave treatment. and by the the surgeon should have got back to me.

      .

      stay safe and pain free

steve as i have got to know had fell through the ceiling . our plumber left the floor open . now that's a claim isn't it lol.

gave my solicitors number to the wife. yup i am suing my company as well. work place injury !!!!.

      .

he shattered his shoulder between the joists. amob and fire got him out. i made safe.

      .

i have mentored him since and lent him my shoulder pain toys. that was novenber last year. still helping out even this week with freezer packs ( he had my cryo pump kit)

      .

its just selflessness he dislocated his shoulder and tore the rotator cuff. just in it to help .
