Methotrexate? Dosage and How long

Posted , 8 users are following.

Hi all,

I suffer from moderate psoriasis, and am on MTX for past 6 months

Dosages: 12.5 mg for 1 month

followed by 10 mg for 2 months

followed by 7.5 mg for 3 months

Can you please help me figure out if these are high doses and normal number of years it can used as a treatment. Also the maximum dosage already taken by anyone in the group.

Hi, Not sure about psoriasis levels, but I have taken Methotrexate for the last 2 years for Psa, increased to 25mg in December 2014, and still taking that level, have questioned it several times with specialist nurse, but they are happy for it to continue, as bloods results are ok. Sorry not to much help

    Hi,

I was on 15mg mtx by tablet, then injection and it didn't do much good. I was off it for a year now I'm back on it with Entenercept (Enbrel). My initial dose was 15mg but my liver results went very high so I was dropped back down to 10mg and my liver is fine with that!

I think I will be on it for life or as long as it keeps working for, as soon as I stop any medication the pain is back full force within a week or so.

    I hope that helps xxxx

      Hi Karen,

I've had 2nd Stelara shot, like you I'm still experiencing awful pain. I haven't taken a DMARD since March. I'm now on maintenence dose of Prednisolone, 7.5mg per day. Apparently my rheumatologist will decide whether Stelara is working after 6 months (only 5 to go - what joy). Statistically it works for 50% of users. Hope I'm in that 50% cos I don't know what else is available.

Re methotrexate is often used by dermatologists and apparently is very effective. They treat in an agressive manner (high dose, reducing) as the skin begins to clear. I know I'm always repeating my experiences ; please get your bloods checked on a regular basis, ask for the pneumonia vaccine from your GP. No one told me about this and I developed methotrexate induced hepatitis, very nasty, I was very poorly. Mtx was stopped immediately and replaced by another DMARD. Secondly, in April 2015 I developed severe pneumonia and was hospitalised for a week. My CRP was 338, for comparison in a healthy person it should be less than 5. Be the of luck, look after yourself and if in doubt about anything check with your rheumy depth or GP. I wish I had been more confident when things were going wrong!

Hi,My Psoriasis has not been that active for a number of years, just the odd time. I am seeing special nurse this week. I need a few answers, have been experiencing sore stomach, and not eating that well for the past few weeks. I had pneumonia jab several years ago, as have asthma. Interesting re your maintenence dose of Prednisolone, unfortunately not able to take as gives me terrible headaches. I have everything crossed for good results with Stelara and hope that I too in the 50%. I will share any info I get once I have been to hospital. Take Care

I don't think there is any medical evidence to prove what you are saying is right, maybe you were in remission anyway.

I have psoratic Arthritis which is why i have been on Methotrexate, It has made no difference what so ever to my Psorisis. Also i was started on a low dose of 7.5mg and increased to 15mg. I have not heard of it being used for Psorisis and not heard of it being started on a high does and decreased.

Hi Suresh, this is all new to me. I have to take 6 x 2.5mg MTX  once a week plus one folic acid two days later. I really don't understand the way you have to take these drugs. I hope that maybe one of the others will be able to answer you question

Hi Carol, May i know, since how long have you been taking Methotrexate.

    Hi Suresh and Carol,

I hope I've explained how methotrexate is used for psoriasis. It also treats psoriatic arthritis. It is classed as a Disease Modifying Anti Rheumatic Drug (DMARD). As the name suggests this group of drugs slow down the development of psoriatic arthritis and slows down skin cell reproduction in psoriasis. Mtx destroys folic acid in the body which is why we have to top it up with a pill. Hope this helps
