Pregnancy and giving birth with hip replacement

Posted , 11 users are following.

I'm 34 and had my hip replacement at the age of 27. Now I'm 5weeks pregnant and I'm wondering what will be the complications due to my hip. Anyone has experience in this subject?

I fear the extra weight will weaken the hip. I already feel that it isn't as good as it was at the begining, it gets tired quicker, if i carry anything heavy it starts to hurt.

Also, will I be able to give birth naturally?

Hi Sarah. Yes, please, it would be great to hear a doctor's opinion.

I'm sorry to hear that you need to have this operation in such an early age. I hope yours will be as successful as mine. The painfree life is amazing, hope you will have it soon. smile

I'm 37, had my first hip at 30 and have had two revisions since. At my last referral I asked about this as we are about to embark on IVF, consultant said I may feel discomfort but the hip should support the extra weight. We didn't discuss giving birth so would be interested in the replies.

    Congratulations :0)

    hi marcho,

Is this your first baby?  What did your doctor tell you --- I would think the hip would be strong enoug to carry the weight , but I am not a specialist -

My friends granddaughter had a weak and unstable pelvis and was in bed the last 3 months of her pregnancy ..

    Yes, of course, congratulations !!!

      Hi Renee.

Thanks for your comment. Yes it's my first one. I only discussed this subject with my doctor when I had my surgery. Then he said pregnancy is not a problem, even giving birth is possible for the majority. However the extra weight can wear the hip off, in some cases a new hip replacement needed after giving birth. I don't think it's very common however, it probably depends the current health of the hip too. Hopefully it won't happen with me, but I do prepare myself mentally in case the last few months will be harder and not even able to work.

      Thanks again. smile

    Congratulations 😆

I am sure this will be totally fine your hip will be well settled in and be like a normal hip. The only thing l am not sure about is if you can give birth naturally l know it puts pressure on your pelvis but l don't know about the hips. This is one for a doctor to answer or someone thats been through this before.

    Good Luck x

My mam said id probs have to have a c-section but my mam and aunties had to have sections with their kids xx

Sarah the only reason you would need a c section would be if you couldn't widen your legs enough for a baby to fit through! Have faith in your body and you might surprise yourself x

Haha well atm i cant bend my leg outwards at all but i think something runs in my mams family which affected woman giving birth naturally but hopefully it wont effect me x

Hopefully you'll be like a new woman once you get that hip sorted. I know we had similar problems and I'm only 8 weeks and feel so much better. I'm still not aloud to put any weight on my leg but have no pain apart from when I do the exercises, I can already move my leg to the side and couldn't do that all for a few years previously. Glad your on the way to getting sorted and you can start enjoying life!
