'Clear' Brain MRI... Still a possibility of M.S??

Hi,

I previously posted here about 6 months ago. Please see below (the post shortened)...

"January 2014 I started having pretty bad headaches. Have had a constant headache since then. All day everyday. They aren't bad now - just a dull achy pain

November 2014 I was given medication for vertigo as I was dizzy, head spinning etc. Medication didn't work for vertigo, painkillers don't kill the headache. Vertigo would come and go until recently...

Over the past 3-4months I have been constantly dizzy, extreme fatigue all day everyday. I also get blurry eyes every so often. I have noticed myself slurring words and get stuck on what I want to say, not very often though. I also get tingly lips on and off every day.

Saw a neurologist mid July as G.P. was concerned about M.S. He said about Migraine Associated Vertigo, but also said I wasn't having the typical symtoms of migraines, I get enough sleep, not stressed, etc. He gave me lamotrigine. Although I have a headache all the time, I don't feel it's necessary to treat it as it's not the problem. The problem is the dizziness and extreme fatigue."

That was in July 2015. I am now 25 weeks pregnant and had to stop the lamictal at the beginning of September due to the pregnancy. It was helping the dizziness, but not the fatigue, headaches and everything else.

I went for an MRI of the brain mid November and apparently it didn't show any abnormalities. However, I'm still not convinced. This can't be happeing for no reason. This past 2 months or so my headaches and dizziness have gotten worse, I'm not great on my feet anyway as I'm pregnant.

Basically I'm wondering has anyone been diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis after have a 'clear' brain MRI and if so what other tests were carried out to determine the diagnosis. I guess I'm just worried as the 3 months after giving birth is meant to be greatest for relapses and if it is infact MS that is causing my problems I would like to be prepared for it especially with a new baby coming.

Thank you in advance.

Leah

I don't know but there are other tests you can have because you may have slinal lesions. Lumbar puncture but whether they'd do it on a pregnant lady ? Evoked potentials which is electrodes glued on your head and feet etc again not sure about pregnancy, however sometimes ms gets better after pregnancy as well as does other immune disorders. Stay safe. Stay positive and if you're still poorly after ask for further tests. Have you had a vit B12 test ? That can cause weird symptoms. Good luck

Thanks for the reply. I'm aware of other testing, was just wondering if anyone had been diagnosed from other testing after having a clear MRI or would the doctors just say clear MRI, no MS?

Yeah got B12 tested, iron, full blood count, thyroid and a few others that I can't remember. It was 7 altogether.

Yeah I think I'm going to have to leave it till after as during pregnancy there's not much anyone will do, understandably.

      Thank you for replying smile

First, congratulations on your pregnancy 👌. Second, I was diagnosed with MS after having a lumbar puncture (you didn't specifically say you'd had one) gave a positive result, they look for oligoclonic bands in a sample of cerebrospinal fluid, (it's a test that's almost always used as a diagnostic tool when MS is suspected) and different MRI's. They never found lesions in my brain (my neurologist always thought it likely that I had lesions that were too small to see on my brain MRI's) and my evoked potential test was negative. But my neck MRI's showed an increase in lesions over space AND time, along with my LP test they gave me a MS diagnosis. As you're pregnant, it's probably a good idea to rest as much as possible. After delivery, take naps when your baby does...remember, your health is ALWAYS more important than ANY housework.

Keep a record of all your symptoms, it might be useful in the future. Good luck!
