"Snapping" hip?

Posted , 6 users are following.

I am 2 weeks in after a THR, cementless. I am 49. I have played sport ( netball) all my life & that coupled with a genetic factor has led to me having this ceramic R hip at a fairly young age.

My biggest problem pre-op was that my hip seemed to "clunk" - I could feel the muscle actually move over another when I took a step, (similar to the feeling you get when you've had a big bang to your quads and you feel the muscles move over one another). Plus I had a burning in my groin, sharp pain that is irrated by lateral movements.

Post-op, I'm mobile, can do all my physio, except lateral movements, so I need my husband to slide my leg in and out of bed. 😕

The hip feels great.

But I'm still left with the snapping/ clunking feel and burning groin I had before the op 😣 😥

Please tell me someone else is experiencing this and it's not me alone ? I thought the hop replacement would right this. 😦

Hi Jackie, I am also 49yo with a THR of left hip approximately 11 weeks ago. I also experienced this snapping sensation for approximately 2 -3 weeks after surgery but it eventually stopped, thank goodness and hopefully yours will too as the tissues really begin to heal...my only therapy was walking and doing the home exercises so wonder if you might be doing just a little too much and need to rest more? Good luck to you!!

Just hearing that has made me feel a whole lot better Kelly .

Yes, I am pretty active, so maybe do a bit less is good advice.

      Thank you

Sounds like your right on track to me. I am 40 and three weeks post op. I always felt like I had torn groin muscle. now its a little different groin pain. Before operation, my hip popped back in forth when I was down low on hands and knees working on a machine. Now it grinds, and clicks a little, not painful, but strange. Surgeon told me it was normal, until our muscles heal around new joint it will do that, maybe 3 months. They also said to expect groin pain and thy pain but different. its all due to operation procedure.  Now be careful, don't do to much. Ice is your friend!

    Good luck

A physio has just told me that because this is what was happening before the op, that it may be my illio psoas IT band / hip flexor,  has been damaged before the op. It runs from the groin, out and down to the outside of your knee, which explains pain I was getting there.

She just told me that when healing is underway, I can start on tackling this in about 6 weeks time.

It's hard because I was shocked at first that most peoples pain seems to go after the op, but she explained that the psoas damage could have been as a direct result of my needing to have a new hip and therefore cannot be tackled until hip healing well underway.

    Hi JackieL

I am 6 weeks post-op and have exactly the same clunking feeling in my groin with a similar sliding feeling down the front of my leg to my knee. I am slightly paranoid as my  hip partially displaced 3 times 10 days after my op and I'm terrified of it dislocating fully.

I'm older than you (61) but have always been very active. I think the numerous 10k's I've run are the reason I needed a new hip. Who said exercise is good for you sad

I also needed my husband to put my operated leg into bed at night but thankfully can manage this now.

I saw my surgeon 6 weeks post-op last Tuesday and he basically said he'd see me again in 11 months when he'll sign me off.

I think sometimes, as someone has mentioned to you, that I am overdoing things and then I suffer the consequences afterwards. We are all different and heal differently too. At the moment I'm sort of disappointed but everyone is telling me I'm doing amazingly well and should be more patient. Not in my nature unfortunately but we have no choice other than to stick with it.

Good luck with your recovery. I hope in 12 months time we'll be extolling the virtues of hip replacement

      Thanks Joy.

I'm like you I think, a bit impatient, but I did think that the hip pain I was experiencing pre-op would be righted by the op, then I would just have muscle healing to contend with. So like you , I am initially disappointed.

However, the clunking/movement of muscle over bone, is getting a little less each day.

Hopefully I will be able to get to the stage where I can eventually stand up, weight on my bad leg, without feeling I have to stand on my toe and let something adjust inside, before I can actually put my foot flat.

That's my goal - or my hip op would have been pointless.😕

Early days. Small improvements daily 😊

    Hi Jackie

When you refer to your muscle is it your psoas you're talking about?

I didn't have quite your symptoms but I did get the lateral pain deep in my groin & also with knee flexion. In my revision surgery my surgeon lengthened my psoas as the prosthesis was catching on it. Early days for me but it seems to be going ok so far.

Interested to see what others comment.

    All the best.
