?Splenic flexure syndrome

Posted , 4 users are following.

My pain is severe at times...doubled up unable to walk......starts left upper quadrant travels into my back and across my abdomen. Sometimes I vomit passing wind can sometimes help ease pain. I have been suffering with this pain for years and my previous GP said it was wind trapped in my large umbilical hernia and said to take peppermint!

I've just been to my present gp and he's perplexed as he told me - his words "there's nothing on that side"

He says I'm tender on right side too and that's indicative of biliary colic.

So, disillusioned I hit the internet and it seems that there is a condition that is recognised in USA called Splenic Flexure Syndrome and it describes my pain exactly!!! I can't find anything on UK sites.

Any one else have any info on this please?

Thanks guys

If a gp recons there's nothing in the left upper abdomen then I'd leave and find a gop who has a basic knowledge of anatomy!

I trained as a nurse back in the darkest depths of time and although many things Ive forgotten some things Ive retained. ie the spleen and the tail end of the pancreas is on left side.....but I just smiled sweetly...he was far too interested in the tenderness on the right hand side citing biliary colic as the cause!!!

I am printing all I can find on Spenic flexure sydrome and Im going to take with me at my next appointment!

Wish me luck...Ill report back asap!

      Thank you for your comment

Maybe your GP meant that there is no hernia or wind on that side when he said 'there is nothing on that side'?  My ultrasound came back with the result that they couldn't see anything on the scan,  I interpreted that as they were unable to see any organs at all.   I asked for an fuller explanation and I discovered that In reality they meant that they couldn't see anything wrong with the organs they scanned.  Sometimes medical explanations can be very confusing to ordinary people like us.

Thanks for your reply. I agree and also sometimes GPs can't see the wood for the trees.....My GP had biliary colic in his mind and refused to consider anything else!!!

I was reading that some doctors say that Splenic Flexure Syndrome is a type of IBS whereas others say it is a seperate condition.  Certainly both of them are very similiar although SFS is predominantly to do with gas pain.  Very confusing!

Hi. I couldn't agree more! It's not important to me how it's recognised as long as it is!!! Thank you
