I had THR back in March and had the same issue. My knee would get real tight and sometimes felt weak. After strengthening my leg for a while it go better. it doesn't feel weak anymore although I will still feel a little tension periodically, usually after a hard workout and my whole leg will be a bit tight.

    Hi Pete,

Good to see you on the site again and obviously getting on with your exercises, walking etc. I think most people have some degree of discomfort in and around the knee of the operated leg. When you think about it, all the wrenching, sawing, drilling and banging that has been done at the top of the femur is going to send shock waves and trauma to the bottom of the femur - and where is that? The knee!! It's hardly surprising it complains. I had a bit of swelling on my knee and it was very sore at the side and towards the back for a while. It did gradually get less and less and now, at 12 weeks, it's only a bit tender if I press it at the side. I'm sure yours will settle down as well. If it really bugs you, wrap a bag of frozen peas in a towel and sit with your leg slightly raised and hold it on your knee. (Frozen peas are better than ice as the bag will squash around the shape of your knee.) Hope this helps.

Hi, yep. Same here. If you gently stretch your hamstring I found that helped. Remember the 90 degree rule tho. Also ice or heat can help and massage. I also used anti-flam rub. Worked a treat.

    Good luck.

Hi Pete,. As you know im a week behind you and its all going very well except my knee! painful and swollen above and to the left of the knee cap, sore behind and feels stiff when exercises. im sure like marion says its all about the trauma from the op. have you watched the procedure on youtube? there's no wonder its sore really. other than that im really pleasantly surprised with progress. dressing off today, dropped down to one crutch and dropped the strong pain killers, now just on paracetamol and one or two stronger ones if it hurts in the night. all the best!

    kind regards

Not to worry mate, that tightness is caused from the swelling. I felt that tightness each time I did heel slides on the bed,but after a few weeks the swelling goes down and the tightness goes away.
