1 1/2 weeks post Ankle ORIF surgery Neuroma like symptoms

Hi I had ankle ORIF surgery about 11 days ago 3 different incisions; medial malleolus, lateral malleolus, as well as the re attaching of a tendon on back of my foot. Through my research I have been reading that nerve irritation / injury following these specific incisions cites is very common because of where the perpheral and a few other nerves are located.

I am not having any burning/stinging/stabbing/ tingling sensations at the incision sites, but on the top of my foot around my 3rd, 4th, and big toe I am having pretty constant shooting/stinging feelings that may go away for an hour or so until I start noticing it again.

Has anyone experienced something like this following ankle ORIF surgery? If so how did it heal, or did you need to consult with your doctor?

Thank you for any help!!

Hello, I have had ORIF surgery for a dislocation and fracture of my talus bone 13 weeks ago and I too had the pains you are describing. It is nerve pain and is very common but normal and it will get better. Try keep your toes warm but not to warm because nerves are sensitive to temperature . I found if my toes got cold the pain was worse. Also keep foot elevated above your heart level. Massaging the foot/toes is so good for the healing process too. I have heard that these pains are good as it means the nerves are reconnecting. Hope you have a speedy recovery!

I appreciate your reply very much! I have noticed that cold or hot temperatures make it a little uncomfortable. I actually got my sutures removed a couple days ago and was placed in a boot, I can't really wear it because of the sensitivity and sensations it creates on the top of my foot with it on. Did you experience similair nerve sensations from anything really touching or rubbing on the top of the foot? And how long did it take for these feelings to go away for you?

It does seem that it is getting gradually better as a week ago when I was still in the temporary splint after surgery I could barely tolerate the stinging/burning/stabbing sensations and needed to take a hydrocodone at night; Now the painful stabbing and shooting has mostly subsided but the sensitivity has lessened some and is still there.

Again I greatly appreciate your response, Hope your recovery has gone smoothly!
