So I have a quick question - I have horrible chest pains and back pain - can hernias be repaired with surgery (mine is fixed)

Apparently... by way of key-hole surgery I'm told.  Also told, the fix isn't always successful.

Google it. The doctors seem unanimous it's the only way to cure a hernia.

And, yes, there's many instances of 'complications' - for instance chronic pain - and there's many instances of recurrence.

The search is on, by those with hernias, to try to find better solutions. Understanding of the cause (NOT muscle strain, apparently, according to latest scientific findings), understanding why the body doesn't fix it quickly itself, finding what exercises or diets might help, exploring the possibility it has some bacterial cause deep in the body...  and so on..

    Help with that.

Abrogard, have you found any connection between hernias and osteoarthritis?  I have had 4 hernias over the last 2 years.  I also have bad osteoarthritis and I am relatively young for it to be this advanced.  Like the muscle strain theory of hernias, I've read that doctors are now moving away from the idea that OA is caused by wear and tear on the joints and there is a theory that it could be some sort of autoimmune disease.

I haven't managed to fine any link but wondered if you have.
