1 step forward 2 steps back!

Hi all, I have been on here since my TLHP on Jan. 7th & am so thankful I found you all! I have been progressing pretty well but as I'm feeling better I am up more & trying to get back to doing everything that I did before surgery & then I seem to have hip pain again. Is it normal to progress & then slip backwards a bit? Just don't know if I should push through or try to rest more. I started back to work yesterday & am on my feet for 4-5 hours as I manage a school cafateria. Can't wait until summer break! Thanks, Valerie

It's possible that you may be overdoing it a bit, just have a rest up and maybe take some basic painkillers.  You haven't been on your feet for quite a while at that length so it may get to you.

    Take care

Since you are back to work and are having pain, I suggest you try to get as much rest as you can when you aren't working. Let the other stuff go and just do what is absolutely necessary. And, like Lynn said, make sure you are getting regular, proper pain relief. I'll bet you are counting the days until summer!

Dear Valley girl - from conversations have read on this forum, I think it is a rare person who hasn't had any backsliding. In my own case, I've known almost immediately when I over idea it and needed to retrench, rest and slow it down a little .. but still keep up with stretching exercises or I would lose even more ground.

I am at six weeks, so behind you a bit. But, I don't envy you 4-5 hours at a stretch on your feet.

I sure hope you have good supportive shoes with good cushioning. If not, maybe time for a wee shop and there is lots to choose from albeit not inexpensive to buy. However, consider it an important investment in your recovery and longterm health.

I just saw my surgeon yesterday and he reminded me to continue my exercises esp the abductors which he feels are THE key to longterm success.

Is there any chance of trading spots with someone else on the job for even an hour to give you a change of position. iIf it could feasible, consider bringing in a cushion mat and something to prop your foot some up once in a while (something I used to do when working conferences for a long stretch.

Good luck with re-entry and ...may the summer come quickly.

Hi! I would imagine, yes after resting its hard to be working for 4-5 hours on feet.Rest as much as possible, ice before and after being on feet, only do what necessary and maybe as doc about some pain killers? Can u ice during a work break? Good for you!  Im trying to prepare. Since 11 days out when they took out my staples Ive been walking for 3 mins then 4 mins now 5 mins 4-5Xs a day. I ve been doing well w that, but today 18 days post op Im sore and tired so maybe I ll walk only 2xs today 5 mins each and ice more. I, like you, wonder how long this rollar coaster is for? BUT Im looking forward to getting back to work at the 6 week mark April 29th BUT Im not cleared to drive and I dont see surgeon again til 4/ 26. So my original Dr note says 6-8 weeks so may be off two more weeks after that. When did you get back? Keep up the great work Take care and blessings to you!

Oh absolutely - usually when I overdid it ... You feel great, do too much, and then feel bad ... rest until you feel better, then thinking you should be further on in recovery than you are, you overdo it again ........... YES !

You probably think you are further through the recovery process than your body actually is.  It's so common, we all do it.

Even when we get back to work, we are not fully recovered, it goes on for months and months, years even.  I am having a 'rest' day from work today, and am back to the commute to work again tomorrow morning .

    Best wishes.

    Hi Valerie

I'm the same as you, trhp Feb 15th. I've been without crutches since week 5 but still struggle sometimes. I can't full weight bear on that leg as it's too uncomfortable and feels weaker.i was doing ok but seems I have gone back a bit I'm my recovery. I went shopping in the town centre with my daughter last Friday and did quite a lot of walking, by the time I got home I was in so much pain I could hardly move about. I go back to work in 3 weeks and will be on my feet all day. I'm worried that I won't be able to manage. I still have hip and groin pain and still some days have to take pain killers.i thought I would be feeling better by now.

    Hi valleyregirl,

Are you working full time or on have phased return? Standing for long hours is not good for our body anyway - Is there any way you can sit on some kind of bar stool or are walking and (gasp!!!) carrying heavy stuff ???

It is normal , the moving forwards and then (feels like) backwards -

I would not push through at this time, but rest instead -

You are challenging yourself all the time anyway, darling - some TLC is in order sometimes..

    big warm hug

    renee
