1 week on from RTHR

Hello there fellow hippies , it's been one week since my op , I think I've been doing well considering the surgery that I've had done . I came out of hospital on the Tuesday after 3 days in hospital which were a bit of a blur , it must have been the morphine . My first morning waking up in bed after a ok sleep was very weird and I woke up thinking bloody hell I forgot I've had my hip replaced , which wasn't nice 🙁.but since then it's been brilliant being back home , the main problems I've had are some times I can't get comfy being sat down, but getting a big bag of ice from the supermarket has helped a lot , I just place it on my outter thigh or on top or lower back and this really helps . Also not being able to get comfy at night , but sleeping on my back doesn't help . I thought my leg would have been a lot more swollen but the swelling didn't come out until about Wednesday , then the ice took it back down again . Walking has been really good with my crutches , my wife says it's been getting better everyday , yesterday I was even walking with 1 crutch and this felt good also .i have not been outside yet ,all the walking has been done in the living room . The nurse is coming today to change my dressing so I better have a wash and put some deodorant on .. Lol ... See you later hippies

That's good, positive news Scott! How often are you using the stairs at home? Also when you are sitting, is this on regular chairs or recliner. Finally (sorry, this is the last question), how easy has it been getting up from your bed for the trips to the bathroom, especially at night? Thanks Scott, have a continued good recovery. Looking forward to reading about your progress. Regards, Jeremy.

PS My LTHR is in May; our GP surgery doesn't provide a nurse home visit service, I have to go to them if I can (will I be able to get out and about one week after surgery!). If not I'll have to find a private nurse I suppose ... That'll be fun!

Hello Jeremy , I'm using the stairs about twice a day , but I feel I could easily do more . The chair I sit on is one supply to me from the Nhs it has adjustable legs .getting up in the middle of the night has been getting easier every night , initially it was hard because everything was stiff not really sore . The nurse is coming today to check the dressing and ask me questions no doubt , like last time .good look with your Jeremy I'm sure you'll be ok .

Great news Scott, it sounds as though you're doing well.  The first couple of weeks are the worst.

Sleeping at night is a universal problem,  You have to get experimental with pillows until you find a comfy position and if you're lucky you'll get a couple of hours sleep before it gets uncomfortable and you have to rearrange them all again.

    Hi Scott,

welcome to this side - seems that you are doing really well - I mean, one week post-op is early in recovery, as we say here ...

maybe you can get some gel packs instead of using the big bags of ice -

It is all normal- the swelling, the discomfort when sitting , sleeping etc -

it will get better ...did you have posterior or anterior approach? A lot of swelling in and around the incision, Scott ....

Great to have your wife being so encouraging - that really helps a lot getting you and staying motivated !!!1

big warm hug for you both

Hi Scott, welcome to joining the hippies lol.

Getting comfy anywhere in the beginning is hard, trial and error comes into it, you just have to fiddle about with pillows etc I'm still sleeping on my back, until I go for my check, I'm 8 weeks now, you do actually get used to it but it is not easy to start with.

You may find the swelling will get worse before it get's better..

Your walking with 1 crutch already with posterior, wow, I had sticks, but was expecting crutches lol When you start going out, it helps if you have someone with you, especially if the pathways are a bit iffy.

    Your doing well, keep going.

Cheers Lynne , I'm having a stroll up to the butchers with my wife with 2 crutches , might treat my self to a Cornish pasty ..this might help with the discomfort lol
