Hi there

my dad is 1 week post op following left full hip replacement. he is managing to mobilise with crutches however only for short period of times, when getting back onto bed and carrying out exercises he is in a lot of pain even with being on high dose pain killers. Wound site is great however bruising very bad. He hasnt had any follow up and doesnt have follow up with physio till next week. is this normal for this stage?

I was offered a physio appointment three weeks after my op, I assume that was a sign off. I was not able to go after a bad laceration to one lower leg and an infected blister, which smells awful, to the other one which had been caused by a clamp during surgery, so I have not seem the physio since leaving hospital although I did talk to them on the phone to cancel the appointment. I am just over three weeks post op. I think your father will find that the first two weeks are the worst and then things start to improve slowly. If he does the suggested exercises that should help strengthen the muscles, but only do them if they do not give him pain, don't go for the "burn"!! Also a little walking each day is a good idea. He should rest as much as possible at the beginning and eat lots of protein (and chocolate!).

I had my left hip done and get into bed the left hand side, getting in the right hand side would be much more difficult.

    I agree with Ptolemy.

The first 2 weeks are the worst.

I had a physio appointment over the phone at 3 weeks, although I'd been through the exercises with a physio when in hospital. He e mailed me more advanced exercises but I find walking is doing me a lot if good too.

Initially, I just kept walking up and down the hall. Keep moving but rest too and chocolate really helps for reasons unknown.

Also chocolate has no calories just after your hip op!!! I am finding I do something and wait for the pain and it does not happen, it is fantastic. Your father should be at that point soon too.
