1 week post op and I fell today

Distal fracture to my fibula required a plate and 7 screws along with 2 tightrope cables to stabilize the syndesmosis. Felt like I was doing great and then I lost my balance today using the kneerover in the driveway. I had to put my foot down to arrest my fall.

I only have a splint right now and I landed directly on the heal. There was no intense pain, just an all over tingling sensation followed by some swelling. It feels ok for the most part but I'm just sick worrying I messed something up or that it could've been worse.

I just had this conversation with a PA on Friday as I was curious how delicate the repair is. He basically told me nearly everyone falls and makes mistakes. That if you're going to fall you have to use the foot and that overwhelming majority of instances there's no damage.

Anyone have any first hand knowledge or experience with this? I'm planning to call tomorrow to see if they want to xray it. image

    Hey Tom,

definitely call and check what they want to do.

If it's not hurting worse than it is probably okay. I did the same thing, but at 3 weeks post op and it was fine - just painful!

The plate and screws are really there to protect it and hold it in place so the likelihood of damage is minimal. It would be more concerning if you did the same thing and you had a fracture but no fixation. Then the bones could move. They cant move with the plate.

Yah I don't feel more pain but it does feel "different" . Tighter around the base of the ankle, maybe just new swelling.

I fell too less than a week after surgery getting out of the shower and put weight on my ankle. The doc said that as long as I didn't have intense pain I was fine and it turned out I was.

I slipped on damp tile with my crutches about 10 days after my surgery

I came down and dropped crutched and used both arms to catch my fall

My ankle had cast and it slipped outward and I hit my shin bone pretty good

I was so nervous cause I was supposed to be on lockdown for 2 weeks! LOL!

Had tingly feeling but fortunately I didnt screw anything up! (no pun intended)

When cast was removed at 4 weeks post op and xrayed all was healing but I had a huge bruise on my shin where I hit hard

Thanks for all the feedback. Called this morning and they wanted to take an xray.

Everything still stable and good to go. Time to move on and no more falls!
