1 week post op full hysterectomy except ovaries

Hello, so I'm 1 week post op, and I feel GREAT!! Off my pain meds no spotting. I still have glue in my belly button and my side incisions are fully closed. Is this normal? Can I go back to work? I have an office job, no lifting what so ever.

Please advise.

Hi there, I wouldn't go back yet, 1 week is very very early days, what does your consultant advise? I had the same op as you but everything went, I know I am retired but I know also that I definitely couldn't have done a days work after just 1 week, I would phone your consultant and ask his/her advice.

Thanks phoebe white for replying. I actually have my post op appt next Tuesday the 29th. I feel great, I followed all the instructions to the T. I was up and walking the day after my surgery as I had complications waking up from the anesthesia. Also, I'm not a pain pill kinda person so the drugs they were shooting into my IV were just to strong, my dr had the nurse stop the IV and just give me Motrin 600. How long were you off your feet? I'm also experiencing insomnia.... I used to be in bed by 9pm now it's 2:30 am and I'm wide awake.... Go figure.

Hi again, I was also up and about the morning after surgery would have been up sooner but had those things on my legs that stop you getting DVT's the ones that inflate every so often, wasn't allowed to take them off, I didn't need pain killers of any kind and have never had any pain except a bit of gas pain, I was out walking my dogs albeit a short walk the day I left hospital which would have been 4 days post op, my next door neighbour shouted at me from her window 'what are you doing, get back home!' I just smiled and carried on, I'm a very outdoorsy person and hate being cooped up for too long, so I wasn't off my feet for very long at all, just had to be careful not to lift anything heavier than a kettle, and definitely not do things such as hoovering, my consultant made a joke when I asked him about that and he said that hubby should hoover for at least 5 years lol! I wish. I have found the most annoying thing during recovery has been the infamous swelly belly which after a year is occasionally still happening though not much and it doesn't swell as much either, just annoying, yes I also suffered from insomnia but that got better as the time went on so hopefully yours will too.

    Hi Kookies

Glad all went well and you're feeling OK to go back to work.  But beware!

I had a vaginal hysterectomy at the beginning of the year and felt fine from day1 with no abdominal wound to worry about.  I felt so well I was out walking and doing bits of housework etc (all of which I was advised NOT to do - but I thought I knew my body better that the doctors did!)  However at Week 2 post op I went to have a wee one afternoon and I had a massive bleed which scared me a lot.  I managed to get an emergency dr's appointment and they advised that I went to A&E.  Fortunately before I left to go 12 miles to the local A&E the bleeding had subsided and so I went back home and spent the following day in bed. From then on I was OK.  But it was a lesson to me to listen to the experts and do as I was told.  I rested a lot more for the next couple of weeks and continued to have a good recovery - -running 6 miles after 6-7 weeks post op.

I was signed off work for 12 weeks and although I felt I could have returned earlier I'm glad I took the whole time off.

Best of luck but don't be tempted to go back to work yet.

Hi I felt like you and tried to do too much and was fine until had massive bleed at 2 weeks. My own fault but scary. Signed off to 10 weeks went back at 6 as by then I was good. I had ovaries taken so most of my probs were being thrown into menopause rather than op in the end. Make the most of taking it easy especially if you feel good. We don't often get chance to slow down so take advantage. Normality is only around the corner!

Thank you froggy28 I am still taking it easy regardless how good I feel. Weird thing I keep reading how a lot of women experienced massive bleeds during the 2 week mark... Scary. Was it coming from your internal stitches?

I think it's when a lot of internal stitches start dissolving and if we do too much we haven't healed properly for them not to be holding things together. I'm 6 months post op now and can say that it's taken to now to feel like things have truly healed but it's been fine for ages too. That probably makes no sense lol
