1 week today after 2nd hip op

Sorry it's taken me so long to post after my 2nd hip op. I had my surgery this day last week. Exactly 4 months after my 1st hip replacement. I had spinal & sedation & was amazingly calm this time not like last time where I had a major panic attack the day before. I had same surgeon & anaesthistist so it all felt quite familiar. This time I was aware of my environment in theatre & could see & hear all the sound effects. It was a bit surreal to be honest but I wasn't scared as it almost felt like I was on the outside looking in. I felt nothing thankfully. I was wide awake in recovery & still blissfully numb from waist down. Overnight the spinal wore off & the pain kicked in but the nurses kept on top of the pain for me with medication to keep me as comfortable as possible. Though I hardly slept all night as my lower back & wound site were very uncomfortable. Saturday morning all I wanted was to get out of bed to ease my lower back. Physio came round & got me out of bed & I walked with crutches out of room & across corridor. I'd forgotten that moment of delight to realise that the old bone on bone pain was gone. I still had awful groin pain but think that was due to the positions team put u in to do operation. My whole leg felt like it weighed a tonne & I felt I had no control over it almost like it belonged to someone else. I had physio 3 times on Saturday & twice on Sunday. I slept 7 hours on Saturday night & wow what a difference that made to me!!! On Sunday I was able to walk down the corridor as far as nurses station 60/70metres. My surgeon was amazed when he came to see me on Monday morning how quickly I was able to get about. On Monday physio told me I could walk about unassisted & I did the stairs too. I thought I would get home on Tuesday 4 days post op but surgeon wanted me to stay an extra day as it was 2nd op so soon & as I live alone during the week. I'm now home since Wednesday & doing really well. Wound is healing nicely though still quite tender. I'm putting bag of frozen peas in pillowcase on wound & surrounding areas 3/4 times a day & diligently doing my physio exercises. Those butt clenches really pinch (ouch). No ted stockings this time thankfully & so far a lot less swelling than last time. Only my ankle is swollen. My hip & butt is swollen too but not as bad as last weekend. Looking forward to all this rain stopping so I can get out for a walk until then I'm just walking around the house from room to room for exercise. Best of luck to all recovering & also to those waiting on ops. It's definitely worth the short term discomfort.

    Fantastic progress there Gossip.

I know what you mean about deja vu - a bit like Groundhog Day film.

Almost getting routine now, having the anaesthetic, going into theatre, recovery, the nurses ........

Nice to know you are now recovering at home - no matter how nice the hospital is, home is so much better.

Keep up the exercises and recover well.

Thanx Graham I was afraid that recovery would be harder this time as its so soon after 1st hip replacement but 1st hip is holding up very well.

    Dear Gossip,

Well done, darling - Oh yes, the euphoric feeling of that pain being gone !!!

It made me cocky and I overdid it !!!  just warning youeek -

I am really happy for you that you're doing so great - it is challenging to do it by yourself, isn't it - Is anybody coming in to check on you? Your wound/scar?

Change the dressing ? And how about those blood thinning injections?

I was told to NOT compare the 2 surgeries ... I did anyway, but it was/is so different -

    Take it easy today-

    big warm hug

Hi Renee I'm going to do like last time & obey all rules set out by physio & surgeon. I recovered very well that way. I have the public health nurse calling every 3 days to change dressing on wound. I get staples out next Friday. I only had to have the blood thinning injection for 1st 3 nights in hospital. I take 2 aspirin every morning since day 3. I have to take them for a month. I'm hoping to get out for a little walk today as its been very wet here since I got home. So far today it's dry. Hope ur still doing well Renee. Take care x
