1 year after TKR and not better

I had my TKR 1 year ago this coming September. I feel like I am almost worse now then before the surgery. The bone on bone pain is gone but I have a large amount of swelling around the knee, a lipoma on the right side of the knee, and the pain is so intense on some days that I don't want to move. I also suffer from chronic pain throughout my body that has gotten significantly worse since the surgery. I feel like I've been hit by a mac truck every morning when I wake up. I'm currently seeing a rheumatologist to find out the cause of this but in the mean time I need help with my knee. I went for a second opinion at the beginning of the summer and was told the same answer "Give it a year " and "The implant looks great" but something is definitely wrong. I can't bend it much and now straightening it hurts. It seems to be getting worse not better. Oh, and I also had a manipulation done 7 weeks after the surgery. HELP!!!

I too was not 100% at one year, I am now 18months postoperative, there has been constant improvement the last six months. I have continued to do my exercises. I can say that I am finally able to sleep the whole night!!! Recommend you do as much physio as you can without pain. I have found the more I do the better I feel, both physically as well as mentally.

As soon as you reach your one year anniversary I would seek a third opinion . And dont give up. If you feel like something is wrong it probably is.

My knee never felt right after my tkr. I also had a MUA and had constant swelling and pain. The last xray taken at my OS office showed everything was ok and no issues with the implant.

In February of this year things got worse. Pain was worse and I felt/ heard a constant thudding in my knee. And my knee didn't feel stable. So I made an appointment with a new OS.

Long story really short- I had an infection and the doctor felt the implant was loose. When he went in to take out the implant he said the tibia portion was so loose he was able to take it out with his fingers.

I'm by no means saying you have an infecion or the implant is loose. I'm saying we all know our bodies and if we feel something is not quite right it usually isn't. Good luck and i hope you find out what is wrong.

Improvements do still happen but I am a great believer in trusting your own instinct. I would seek a professional opinion. No harm done in seeking one.

I think you have to accept that the knee is never going to be quite as good as a good knee that has not been replaced.

I know what you mean about bone on bone pain going.

I had TKR 6 years ago and when I woke up the morning after surgery I knew all that arthritic pain had gone. Yes of course I was in pain but somehow it was a different kind of pain.

Sorry this has not worked out well for you.

Take care and keep in touch

    Trust your gut!!!!

After years of dealing with medical issues where there was no resolve, my sister got me this mug that talks about "Never Underestimate The Power of a Hissie Fit....some battle are worth the fight!"  and told me I needed to start having one with the doctors. I took it to heart and started pushing for answers...didn't get all of them but got enough!!

Thanks for all your suggestions. I would say I can deal with the pain, but I can't. Its debilitating and getting worse. I work as a veterinary technician and I'm having trouble doing my job and I'm afraid I may lose the job. I'm just so frustrated with all the pain and everyone just saying deal with it. I've been dealing with pain for over 20 years, the TKR was suppose to make it better not worse. Could it be an infection? Could an infection linger for months? The area where the lipoma is is hot to the touch but the rest of the knee is cool. I just wish I could find a doctor who gave a damn about getting to the bottom of this. My pain management doctor seems to be the only one who cares but all he can do is refer me to different specialist and prescribe me meds. I've been on pain medications for almost 3 years!!! Enough is enough.

I'm sorry to rant but I am just damn frustrated and I will not settle for this kind of life. I'm only 46 with a 14 year old son who thinks his mom is always sick.

Unfortunately, yes, an infecion can linger for months . You need to go find another orthopedic surgeon. They will do blood work and maybe aspirate your knee to see if you do in fact have an infecion. If you do it is better to find out sooner rather than later.

There are ways of finding the excellent surgeons who will listen and get to the root of your issues. Use Google,. Ask around. Call the local hospital. Someone has to know a good ortho surgeon v
