Hi all,,,I asked to be put on Antabuse a year ago due to the fact I began drinking extremely heavy...I thought it may lead to a huge problem. I see a doctor for depression and told him what I was doing. My mom, sister, brother and my dog, all died in the same year. I was SO depressed and lost, that I began to drink from morning to night. Because of my drinking, my 13 yr relationship came to an end. I have gone threw intense treatment for depression and have a grief support group now. I was taken off Antabuse a month ago. I asked to be taken off. I would like to have a drink at my daughters upcoming wedding, But Im afraid I may get sick. I have read so much about the drug, Which by the way was a life saver when I needed it. I was a social drinker before they all passed away. Maybe 1 or 2 drinks a month. I can't find a definite answer. Is it safe to say the drug is now out of my system? Can someone give me an answer..? The wedding is in 2 weeks. Thank you all!

You have been on it for a year?  I'm not sure...I was on it for 6 months...and drank after 2 weeks off it and had to be hospitalized....HOWEVER, I had a toxic reaction to the medication and HAD to stop it.

Have you been having regular liver fuction tests...that are normal?  I didn't have the tests...and come to find out...my liver had toxic amounts (which means that is why I COULD have still had it in my system after 2 weeks).

I'm glad you are getting support for the loss of your family members...that is so sad...no words can soothe you I'm sure....I feel sorry for you and your family....I imagine all of this had made the wedding preparations even MORE complicated sad

I've always heard that 2 weeks is the max, but I've never taken it, so no practical experience to lend. If alcoholism doesn't run in your family and your problem with it was truly situational (and your doc says you're in the clear), then I suppose you could test it with a sip of beer when you'll have the next day off. Since you stopped taking it a month ago, I would think it would be long out of your system.

Do you have someone keeping tabs on you in case you relapse to heavy drinking?

    Hiya,

I don't know much about Antabuse but I would have thought it would be out your system fairly quick, say after 72 hours at least. If in doubt does that nhs direct number still exist or could ring doctor? I can only imagine you would perhaps be ill down to not having alcohol in your system for so long etc. Perhaps give a trial run and have one low alcohol volume drink.

As for why you started drinking so badly, no wonder!!! Poor poor thing no normal person would be able to cope without some vice having gone through that! You must be such a strong brave person
