10 months post Lapidus and still in pain

After a straightforward Lapidus op and 2nd metatarsal shortening 10 months ago, I was healing ok and comfortably able to walk 10-15k steps a day, albeit my foot still swells. However about 2 weeks ago I noticed a callous under toes 3and 4 and it was starting to get painful. I saw the surgeon again, who says I have changed how I distribute my weight and suggested some off the shelf orthotics. I have had all the hard skin removed and have the orthotics he recommended in my shoes but still find that my foot is very sore. Any suggestions? Also will the swelling ever go?

thanks

Shelf orthotics are not really the answer, as they are not shaped for your foot. If you know anywhere where they slee custom made orthotics, that should be the answer your surgeon should have given. He is correct about the weight shifting, but yo achieve a good result, you need custom made orthotics. Some countries the insurance company pays for them if prescriped by your doctor.

      Hi Susann

Not sure which country you live in but here a private foot and ankle clinic, who were the only ones who told me i had a hammer toe ( after National Health Service podiatrists dismissing me at visits tossed me a special shoes book!); offered an X ray of foot to make up bespoke orthotics £390. My dayghter got hers on private medicine. You can't wear them in all shoes. Seems you have to have special footwear where you can remove the lining.

I feel at day 7 (and counting) after corrective surgery that i have come this far so i'll do what i have to get the best feet possible. I'm 68 and superfit and a doer. Mentally i'm on dead stop slow. I honestly wonder if this us the reason this had happened, to sliw me down to get a different perspective on life?!

Hi Brenda, I shuttle between Munich and the South of England. There is a guy in Worthing doing custom made insoles and he does not charge that. The problem with insoles on the shelp is, they are not specific enough. These days you can have custom made indoles even for ballett shoes. If you in the South, I can try to find his contacts for you

Hi. Just please to the contact number in Worthing. Trouble is we live in London for a reason. We hate driving! To get them made would mean me getting to see him. At the moment i gave made no plans for footwear when the time comes. I'm conscious that i am using my other foot in a compensatiry manor. I understand now the reason the consultant intimated elecation, elevation, elevation! Using crutches and going out yesterday, and brudge today has left me with aches and numbness. Resting now before i go "on holiday" to my daughters 30 minute drive away and a minefield of a garden to trapse across!
