    Hi Cassandra,

I had L5-S1 fused about 4.5 months ago.  I'm still in a lot of pain - although I have improved from where I was earlier in the recovery.  My pain is low back, glutes, and radiates into my legs.  I was disappointed because my dr told me I would be feeing great and back t work in 2 weeks - which was not the case!  I am working now (went back on a reduced schedule at 4 weeks), but I still have good days and bad days.  10 weeks is still very early.  Are you doing PT yet?  I did some but stopped as I changed insurance and my benefit is not good until I hit my deductible.  I find the only position I can get comfortable is on my side wiht a pillow underneath my legs.  It will get better.  I am still in worse pain than pre-op - which my dr says is a rare case.  I had a CT scan today, and am awaiting results.  So far, X-rays and an MRI show everything is healing like normal - but I am still worried.  I hope you find relief soon.  Perhaps your dr would give you something to sleep?  I take Simply Sleep (OTC) and sometimes phenergen - which is an anti nausea medication that makes people drowsy.  Good luck, I hope you find relief soon!

      Hi Krista,

I wouldn't be surprised if the fusion failed.  they often do at that level  Mine failed twice! And to be back at work so soon? Too soon.  I went back to work after 5 months, and then found the fusion had failed, had a second one and went back to work after only 6 weeks and then that one failed too.  Eventually, I gave up and quit working - I'm trying to get SSI Disability now.  Rare case? No I don't think so. You can have worse pain post-op if they misplaced the screws and they are impinging on your nerves. Sounds like your doctor is in a lot of denial. You need a second opinion.  Take care of yourself - the doctors wont.

      Hi Linda,

I really hope it didn't fail!  When did you learn yours failed - as in how one after surgery?  I am so sorry to hear you had to give up and quit working. Dr said CT looks OK and he can see formation of bone in the disc space, and hardware is in place.  Fingers crossed.  If it doesn't improve soon, I will seek a second opinion.

    Cassandra,

I had my surgery over 20 years ago, but like you I had the pain that never went away, and I was forced back to work way to early and that was just after a discetomy, and I was crying and had to leave work, finally got a second opinion which by than I had to get fitted for a brace that went from your chest down to your waist, was in that for six weeks hated it at first but it gave me stability and it became my best friend had the fusion (died) but came back, but I was still in a lot of pain, had a hospital bed ended up with infection from the hospital (staph or mrsa) long story short my back felt so much better in that brace I didn't want to give it up tried pt made me feel worse, so my dr came to a conclusion I was a failed case out of 1000 patients he did I was the one that failed it's amazing being that person who fails, 20 something years later I'm still in all kind of pain stimulator failed but battery is pushing out have to set up surgery to have it placed in my stomach, but it will be turned off til i get a different stimulator, it's been a long road with pain for me, I'm on disability tried working couldn't do it, stuck it out til my daughter was grown but ended up getting fired from my job because I missed a few days from the pain ( the kicker is a was honest with the company about my back and they said they would work with me, yay right) so now I have sclerosis in my fusion which probably means they have to go in and put more rods and screws casue I can't even stand walk sit or lay down without being in pain, just hang in there. Hopefully you just went back to work to soon and your body needs more healing, I still to this day put a smile on and put my feet on the floor regardless of the pain and try and be happy, because being miserable makes you feel more miserable so I wish you the best, relax don't push yourself and I hope you heal properly.

    Take care

    Cynthia (Cindy)
