10weeks after hip replacement.

i would like to do swimming but I do not know if I am ready yet. Tried looking it up but I can find nothing to say how long before I can swim. I did not get physio after being discharged from hospital so do not know even if I'm doing the right exercise for the stage of my op. Could someone ease reply and let me know so I can loose some weight before I have my other hip done or I'm going to have a big battle ahead of me with all this weight I have gained. Thanks people x

I have found several sites that refer to swimming. Most say as soon as the wound has healed, so yes at 10 weeks. Don't know your favourite stroke, but breast stroke is viewed with caution by Maoist and banned by many. I swim breast stroke arms and crawl legs now!

Thanks Maggie that's a great help. Emailed my sister to see if she will come with me.

Just one more question when can I get my jeans back on tried one day and had them on a couple of hours and was so uncomfortable I had to changes, even after 10 weeks is it still sensitive.

I still can not lay on my operated side yet and only for a short time on my good side.

Should be back at work now but the serge on said he wants the results of my MRI that I'm having on the 15th August to find out if I need the other hip done or a rep are job. So feeling quite depressed waiting for results and not working.

All functions with friends are on hold to.

Well not long to wait so hopefully it should all be over again and get back to some sort of normality.

    Hi Heather

I had my 6 week check up last Monday and specifically asked the surgeon about swimming. I had previously been told that swimming would be ok as soon as the wound is healed but not the frog kick in breast stroke. The surgeon said that although I can swim if I do crawl or backstroke or even breath stroke with a crawl kick, I must not do the frog kick until 3 months post op as it takes that long for the muscles and tendons to repair.

    hope this helps

Hi Heather,I am having reflexology every other week and a jacuzzi every other week! Have you tried hydrotherapy? Be warned your local pool the main pool water will be cooler than the kiddies pool! I had full use of the spa pool in our local pool centre! As I suffer from anxiety this is wonderful!! Thanks. No have have tried nothing yet but will look into it.

I will do just a couple of lenths in the pool to try and get a bit of this weight off that I have piled on after my op.

I have arthritis in my joints and my hips are suffering. Well my left one now lol. Hopefully they will get me in ASAP and get it over with. X thanks for your reply x

    Hi Heather,

swelteringly hot night  - just walked the cat round the block as part of my 6000 steps daily I aim for (80% days success; a few days I do double that!)

swimming - as you can see from below replies, opinions vary but Exeter Hospital physio at 6 week assessment and also in  their hip book both say say after 6 weeks swim if your body feels fit for it, and wound should be healed by now  (hopefully), AND  including breast stroke being FINE on their reading of the evidence. Yes and others disagee....

like you, no physio sessions pre or post op. I teturned to swimming and driving at six weeks, and Tai Chi at 10 weeks post op. Hydrotherapy or Tai Chi or Alexandra Lessons give a I physical framework for recovery too though....

hope your undone hip allows this...as you say start gently.

    Nite nite

PS. I happily can put my jeans on standing up now - wonder if your hurting hip causes difficulty there? I'm sooo pleased that with my op hip I can do almost anything now, bar crouching

How long has it been for you? I have problems crouching and kneeling and even getting off the floor. Once I'm down there getting up is such a struggle. I walk to my local shop every day not that I need anything but it's a walk lol. Starting to concur the stairs. Hoping to get fit for my next op. Go on holiday in a few weeks a bit of R&R. That has been ok'd by my surgeon. Having problems sleeping myself tonight. Will try again shortly. So pleased your getting through this because it's quite a mental goal as well as a physical one. Take care.

    Dear Heather,

woke early, such a hot nit here in Exeter....

I'm 5.5 months now, no diary but been lucky and recovery smooth - I guess in part cos while 71yo, I was very fit before op, and hopefully so again soon. My other hip was 'resurfaced' 13 years ago, so unlike you not a problem now and I focus on just the one hip recovering. Which meant at 4 weeks sox on myself, and 7 weeks jeans on standing up were fine.

As you say, floor is a concious effort, but that seems the case for most adults.

I make aconcious effort to go onto floor 5 times a day and do a few exercises. As I said, I  can't crouch or sit on haunches yet.

Also squeezing bum more, and can do a shoulder stand now...so still a way to go!

Went to beach yesterday, and so you say my head was scared for my legs walking on sandstone rocks, but the little children did this sooo easy!

Walking to your local shops daily sounds a good routine - maybe get a step counting ap on your phone too? And holiday sounds fab...wonder where you are going? Have fun wotever and keep up the stretches

I went swimming today just for an hour. Done ten laps of the pool. Loved it but feel like I have run miles. Going for a lay down for a bit. Must be because it's been the first time I have swam in years. Will go again next week though.😃👍
