11 months of dizziness and now headaches

Hi. I have been suffering with vertigo/dizziness (mainly swaying feeling) for 11 months. The past few months my head has been very strained and tense and I have been getting headaches everyday. I can feel my whole brain in my head (mainly the top and back) and my head often pounds. Looking up my diagnosis of vestibular neuritis (VN) explains many of my symptoms of the past 11 months but I am getting used to the dizziness and fatigue but the head pain/pressure/strain is far worse than the dizziness now. The symptoms I am experiencing at the moment seem to be that of migraine associated vertigo (MAV) as the symptoms people are explaining for this seem to better explain what I have been experiencing the past few months .I wake everyday feeling dizzy and with a very strained head like my head is too small for my brain and it gets worse untill I get a headache (my whole brain aches). The past week or so the headache goes by the next day but for a while it would take two days or more to go away before returning again.

I have had a X-Ray of my neck (clear), Eye check (needed glasses for first time), CT-Scan of head (clear), Paid to see private ENT specialist (said not much he could do. Suggested as fatigue is so servere and I am a heavy snorer for me to have a sleep study. Results say I have severe obstructive sleep apnoea AHI 32), Seen an NHS Audiologist (all hearing, eye, balace tests don't show any problem with my vestibular system/balance system)

I am waiting for an NHS basic sleep study before ethey consider me for a CPAP machine for sleep apnoea. I have an appointment to have an operation to have a deviated septom corrected as I cannot breath very well through one nostril. I also have an appointment to see an ENT specialist on the NHS in April. When I see my GP soon I will ask to go on the waiting list to see an Neuro-otologist as they specialise in the brain and migraines. The past few months I have cut out  caffeine from my diet and I eat very healthily attending slimming world and I have lost 6.5 stone in 16 months. It has not been easy loosing weight when I have been ill and feeling low but I have made it my missin to loose weight since becoming dizzy. My heart goes out to anyone with this condition. It is an invisible illness and most people don't understand or believe you are unwell. Please stay postitive. My life has changed dramaitcally the past year and I am house bound most days but I have learnt to appreciate the little I can do and the great friends I have. My hope is fading that someday I will wake to find this problem has gone but at least there is some hope still within me. Take care my dizzy friends and may we all recover from this hell in 2015 x

    Hi Jason

I have had the same now for over two years.  It took almost a year to get my diagnosis but was in some way a relief as I thought I had MS.  My symptoms are exactly the same as yours and it is silent migraine.  Ive had many different tablets none of which work at the moment.  However I have had botox at the migraine clinic in London which helped the headaches a lot.  Im waiting for more botox on the NHS but have to try more medication before they will let me.  I find stress makes it miles worse as you screw up your forehead which irritates the corrugator muscle which in turn irritates a nerve running thru your head, face and back of neck.  Keep a migraine diary.  I suppose I have given up on ever not being dizzy but if I keep really still, its not there and I get some relief.  As soon as i move though its back.  Its worse with lighting, PCs and noise.  I feel quite sick sometimes and unfortunately my job went full time and I had to give that up.  Im now looking for another part time job.  I dont know where you live but Im under Salford Royal Hosp who have some of the best neurologists in the UK.  Dr Zermansky runs a head ache clinic and the botox.  I hope you get yours resolved.  My social life is nil but Ive managed to get back shopping which I couldnt do at all last year.  So some improvement.  I didnt know this dizziness was so widespread. I felt really alone and lost my best friend over this.  I read dieting can trigger the dizziness.  Best wishes to a cure for us all.

When I look back in my migraine diary I can see how much I have improved and how much better I was when I was at work, I think it took my mind of it.  The fatigue I first had has improved which I think has come from pushing myself to work four full days a week.  I noticed if I withdrew to my bed on the friday, I was worse than if I forced myself to go shopping.  Now Im not working, I want to lie down all day but am making myself do stuff and am actively looking for another part time job.  Its very very hard as I do feel dizzy all the time and sick and as you say, its invisible so no one understands.  Ive got an interview and with this condition, Ive got brain fog.  I cant conjugate a sentence.  I cant think of the words I want.  I think the tiredness is because your brain is constantly trying to fight against the dizziness and righting itself.  Brilliant about losing the weight, Ive put two stone on as I gave up dancing and ski ing.  Mention silent migraine to them, might be that.  Its migraine without the headache or sometimes with it (buy one get one free !).

Thanks. I have been keeping a brief diary on and off but need to start being more thorough and consistant. I too feel sometimes I am a little better keeping more active even though I am usualy worse after for doing so. I do need to try and walk out and about more. I was doing and walking more than ever when I first got dizzy as I heard It was the best therapy to retrain the balance system but after a few months things got worse and for 2-3 months I have a little exercise. I know I need to get out there more but even on the best of days waliking is the hardest thing. When I walk up the road my brain feels like a swinging pendulum. At this time of year it is even more on an excuse not to get outside. I have read that exercise is a natural pain killer and will reduce migraines. Yes we all love buy one get one free but this is more like buy one get five free! lol

Even on a better day I am not to bad around the house but as soon as I walk out the front door I feel much worse. Very strange but I suppose I should man up and face doing things like this as I know from past experience with anxiety/depression avoidence makes things worse.

I have added some more detail to my first post:

I have been suffering with vertigo/dizziness (mainly swaying feeling) for 11 months ( had mild dizziness on and off since I first started Cymbalta many years ago).  I have also had mild anxiety when I am at my worst which I feel I can handle due to my past history/experience with anxiety and panick attacks and maybe my mental health medication is keeping at bay (Cymbalta, Olanzapine, Epilim). The past few months my head has been very strained and tense and I have been getting headaches everyday. I can feel my whole brain in my head (mainly the top and back) and my head often pounds. I have many days/weeks where I am alot worse with a full head and very dizzy and much more dizzy and head prsssure when I tilt head up or down (recurrent BPPV?) Looking up my diagnosis of vestibular neuritis (VN) explains many of my symptoms of the past 11 months but I am getting more used to the dizziness (still very debiltating at it's worst) and fatigue but the head pain/pressure/strain is far worse and constant than the dizziness now. The symptoms I am experiencing at the moment seem to be that of migraine associated vertigo (MAV) as the symptoms people are explaining for this seem to better explain what I have been experiencing the past few months. I have recently been informed by my GP that my blood test show my thyroid is high and I will be having another blood test soon to check the thyroid levels again. I hear a high thyroid can cause fatigue/tiredness.

I am waiting for an NHS basic sleep study before they consider me for a CPAP machine for sleep apnoea. I have an appointment to have an operation to have a deviated septom corrected as I cannot breath very well through one nostril. Possible causes:

    -Vestibular Neuritis (with recurrent BPPV)

-Migraine Associated vertigo (silent/non silent migraine)

-Hyperthyroidism (blood test show my throid has been slightly high past couple of blood tests)

-Cymbalta (Deloxetine anti depressant) Side Effects (dizziness and my other symptoms common with cymbalta use and very common during cymbalta withdrawl)

I have always suffered with mild dizziness on and off since I first started Cymbalta many years ago.

    -Vestibulopathy ( with ocillopsia)

    -Vitamin or Iron deficentcy

    -Dehydration

    -POTS Syndrome

Sorry all. My third and last alteration of my first post:

    VERTIGO/DIZZINESS/MIGRAINE HISTORY

    10/02/14 TO 05/01/15

I have been suffering with vertigo/dizziness (mainly swaying feeling) for 11 months (I have had mild dizziness on and off since I first started Cymbalta many years ago but nothing like the intensity I experience now).  I have also had mild anxiety since becoming dizzy. The anxiety is when the dizziness is at it's worst . I feel I can handle the anxiety due to my past history/experience in coping with anxiety and panick attacks and maybe my mental health medication is keeping it at bay (Cymbalta, Olanzapine, Epilim). The first few months after becoming dizzy I would be noticably better and hour or so after taking my night time medication (olanzapine and epilim). The past few months my head has been very strained and tense and I have been getting headaches everyday. I can feel my whole brain in my head (mainly the top and back) and my head often pounds. I have many days/weeks where I am alot worse with a full head and very dizzy and much more dizzy and head pressure when I tilt head up or down (recurrent BPPV?) Looking up my diagnosis of vestibular neuritis (VN) explains many of my symptoms of the past 11 months but I am getting more used to the dizziness (still very debiltating at it's worst) and fatigue but the head pain/pressure/strain is far worse and constant than the dizziness now. The past week or so the headache goes by the next day before returning in the evening. For a while it would take two days or more to go away before returning again.

Since becoming dizzy I have been prescribed Betahistine, Stemetil (prochlorperazine) and I am currently taking Cinnarizine. I no longer feel much benefit in taking Cinnarizine but I feel more confident whilst taking it (placebo effect). I do feel less fatigued/tired without it I think.

I have had a X-Ray of my neck (clear), Eye check (needed glasses for first time), CT-Scan of head (clear), Paid to see private ENT specialist (said not much he could do. Suggested as fatigue is so severe and I am a heavy snorer for me to have a sleep study. Results say I have severe obstructive sleep apnoea AHI 32), Seen an NHS Audiologist (all hearing, eye, balance tests don't show any problem with my vestibular system/balance system) on the morning of the Audiology tests I felt much better I had done in a long time which may have been the reason for them not picking up any suffiecent problem with my balance system. On a very bad day I do not think I could have completed some tests.

I have recently been informed by my GP that my blood test show my thyroid is high and I will be having another blood test soon to check the thyroid levels again. I  have read that Hyperthyroidism can cause fatigue/tiredness.

I am waiting for an NHS basic sleep study before they consider me for a CPAP machine for sleep apnoea. I have an appointment to have an operation to have a deviated septom corrected as I cannot breath very well through one nostril. I am considering cancelling this operation as I do not  feel I am well enough to have it in my current state. I also have an appointment to see an ENT specialist on the NHS in April. When I see my GP soon I will ask to go on the waiting list to see an Neuro-otologist as they specialise in the brain and migraines. The past few months I have cut out  caffeine from my diet and I eat very healthily attending slimming world most weeks and I have lost 6.5 stone in 16 months. Hi Jason

if you have sleep apnoea that will definitely leave you feeling fatigued, my friends husband has it and has to wear a sleep mask etc., i don't know much more than this other than he wears this sleep mask and before treatment was also very fatigued due to sleep apnoea.

Thnks for you input Anne. It is much appreciated. I paid through Spire Hospital to have a full sleep study (£300). It involved wearing a chest strap, a clip on one finger to measure blood oxygen and tubes to the nose to measure breathing. These are monitored and recorded by a small device carried around the neck. Obstructive Sleep Apnoea is measured and scored on the AHI scale. AHI of 5 or above means you have Sleep Apnoa. My score was AHI 32 meaning severe Sleep Apnoa. I cannot afford £630 for a CPAP machine and full mask and to rent will cost this much for 6 months rental. I have pushed through my GP to be seen at the NHS sleep clinic asap but it took almost 5 months. Today I have an appointment on NHS to pickup an Oximitery meter (clip on finger to measure oxygen in blood as you sleep) which is the basic sleep study (costs £99 privately). They have been sent my sleep study report but still insist on doing this basic study even though I already have had a full sleep study by a company that the NHS use. This basic sleep study is not as accurate as the full study. I rang the hospital and explained this but they insist I take their basic study before they consider me for a CPAP machine on the NHS. Many people I know of who have Sleep Apnoea say they would fall asleep all the time during the day even whilst talking to someone. I don't do this but for weeks at a time feel extremely tired and foggy all day and no amount of sleep helps. I hope today is a better day for you Anne.

Pathetic that they can't accept the report you already have.  I am a passionate NHS nurse but not so blinded to be unable to see the bureaucracy within the NHS needs addressing.  It is a constant merry go round of referals and re referrals.   I hope you can get sorted soon, at least you are now in the system.  It's appalling that people have to wait so long to get some action.  Feeling much better today with a lovely red nose from non stop sneezing but at least can breathe.

Ha - I went for interview today and got so stressed before that I had the massive pain in the head like your brain is too big for your head.  My ears were pulsating and wooshing and my forehead was so tight.  Then I was over breathing and my tum was in a knot. All the symptoms you mentioned.  But when I got there I was OK and it went well.  Gone back to normal now but still with the dizziness.  That didnt go with the rest of the stuff.  Just goes to show what stress can do to you.

Sorry to hear how unwell you were but well done to you for going ahead with the interview. Glad you felt better and interview went well in the end. Yes stress gets to some of us in the end but many people never suffer the symptoms of it. We are all different I suppose but we are the strong ones! Wish you good luck in getting the job if you can pass an interview in the state you were in you can do anything!

You mentioned the ears pulsating. That is something happening to me to more and more often. This evening for 2 hours my left ear drum was pulsating like I was dive bombing in a fighter jet lol. It is very disorientating to say the least. Hearing my own voice and sounds around me were so sensitive and made my ear worse. It think it is to do with tension and blood flow around the head causing all our head functions to play up in different sequences like this. I try not to worry or analise things too much but the way things are going I sometimes wonder what is going to go wrong next!

Been felling a litle better everyday the past 3 days. Only slight headaches and mild dizziness. Just walked do for 20mins around block. Was great to get out for some fresh air after the past couple of months of being incapacitated but I felt much dizzier and head starined after 10 mins of walking. I won't let this stop me as I need to start doing more. Even though I have been much worse the past few months I feel by limiting my activity it has not helped me one bit. I hope others are getting some relief from this hell even if it is short lived. We live in hope!
