11 weeks post op

Hi everyone

well what a roller coaster ,when am I going to feel better!!

Just can't seem to get things right this end. Have a few good days able to do the exercises and walk about a mile around our estate only to be followed by bad groin pain . Feels like a very low down pricking pulling feeling exactly where the hip has been replaced

( going by my xray photo) so I can only do very small slow steps hardly lifting my leg . This puts me virtually out of action for several days then I start exercises and walking good for a couple of days then back to groin pricking again. If I didn't know better I would say it was the pins/screws pulling and pricking me ,put surely that can't be so .

It's a shame as last time I did my walk I really felt I was motoring along doing same size steps each side (with 2 crunches though as still have very bad trendelburgh gait from a totally fused hip that pulled my hip down and make that leg 2 inch longer)

Both legs same length now though 😀

Anyone else have this kind of groin pain and know what it is. ?

Love some feed back.

Best wishes fellow hippy pals 😀

Well hi Susie. You must have read my mind. I have this same groin pain off and on. Now last week thought I had finally turned a corner. No groin pain no back pain. Still a bit wobbly when I go from sitting to standing. So I'm thinking I'm all good. Getting there.

I'm 14 weeks on Friday. Then off we go again. Achy back. Groin pain. Achy down femur ! Grrrrr

Rollercoaster is the word. Physio exercises just aggravate it so I don't go there. Consoling myself with the fact that this healing journey is a marathon. I just keep thinking it's all part of the process.

Like you I don't know what it is. Groin pain is common. My physio said he wouldn't expect me to be pain free. That was at 12 weeks.

Sorry I cannot help but sometimes just knowing someone else is also suffering sometimes helps.

    Warm hug Sandra. Xxx

Yup suziemo almost constant groin pain at 13 weeks . Physio said ' your hip is in there ' ie your groin area .. most people think it's to the side but it's right in the groin area. I started all this 5 yrs ago with worsening groin pain and they found out my hip had gone 5 years on . So now had new hip and guess what ? Chronic groin pain

Again ! Trying to do groin exercises but it just damn hurts and catches your breath. If it wasn't for the groin I would be doing so much better now . Getting into and out of car a painful experience . Just had a hot lavender, chamomile and rosemary aromatherapy bath that helps but no doubt will be woken by my groin at 4 am ...

Hi Suzie, I would say cut back on the exercise. It takes two years for all the muscles to heal. I'm 15 months post op and still get pain now and again. I would do the exercises you were given post op and when you feel able to do your walks. Sometimes it's the muscles tightening up. Speak to your GP they may be able to prescribe you something for the pain.

    Hi Suzie

I started back work today week 13 tomorrow, I still get a heavy ache going from sitting to standing but it is improving daily. I'm still using a stick when walking a distance but didn't use it about the office. I've been getting deep tissue massage around the scar, groin, hamstring, fascia all on the operated leg and it's really helping.

I've also been doing strengthening exercises on my lower back and concentrating on holding in my tummy and buttocks when walking, this also helps

It's a slow process and I've come to the conclusion that it depends how fit you were pre op to expect a speedy recovery. My partner is 9 weeks post op and has no pain, no meds, no sticks and doing his exercises back in the gym. Not so for me so now I just let him look after me 😊

My guess is you're overdoing it sometimes...maybe slow down a bit and do more physio exercises to strengthen things...do check with the doc re: screws etc.!

You've been through a lot, remember it take 4-5 months to heal all the inside stuff and up to 18 months to be clompletely be in the clear!

    hi suzie,

    oh those darn groins ...

I am afraid that this is normal, part of the re-alligning of our body after hip replacement surgery and years of malfunctioning ..

Any type of major orthopedic surgery causes disruption to the rest of your body too.

In all likelihood, whatever your body has been doing to compensate for your hip pain  has also been causing problems all on its own.

During the surgery your leg needed to be manipulated to get the joint out, femur was cut, cavities prepared for hardware to be hammered in tightly ..

Most likely pelvis was twisted, turned, what have you - this all makes for major overhaul regarding getting back in the upright position and learning to walk properly - just to balance your body is a major task ...

Now, I was in a pretty bad physical shape prior surgery and probaby even worse when THR nbr. 2 came around  -

Have a good talk with your physical therapist - they are not just for giving you exercises to do but also massages , teaching right posture, walking etc...

good luck darling ... be patient and kind to your self ... you are doing great ..

    big warm hug

Hi Suziemo ...so glad you posted as I am the same...😳...10 weeks ....can have 3 great days then 4 rubbishy ones ..I've managed to one pilates class and gone to the gym twice, but totally exhausted the next day ...

Stopped taking codeine as it was messing with my head ..now just ibuprofen and paracetamol...sleep pattern is awful ,which makes mornings impossible .

Surgeon totally happy with results so guess it's just a case of patience and time ..but I get the groin pain too ..

Hope we all start to feel better soon .

It is a reall rollercoaster ride, physically and mentally.   However eventually, very gradually, you will get better.
