11 years of Kidney Infections

For the past 11 years I have been suffering from recurrent kidney infections, reading all the other posts on here makes me feel like Im not totally alone in this as no-one else seems to really understands.

I have been off work for the past 2 days with another infection, on monday I started to get the familiar signs, needing to pee more often, agonising pain in my side, headachy and generally feeling really fluey. I managed to get a docs appointment on tues where he confirmed it was a kidney infection and gave me antibiotics. Im pregnant so was panicking about having to cope with no drugs, thank god I can take a certain type as each time I get an infection I am almost certain I am going to die !

Seriously its that bad, about 6 years ago I was sent for a colonoscopy and endoscopy but nothing was detected on that, since then I have always been told that the infections are just recurrent and that some people are suseptable to them. On tues I asked the doctor if it could be anything else as the terrible pain is always, always only on my right side and in exactly the same place, I was told to just come back if the antibiotics dont work. Im beginning to think I may have a kidney stone as the pain is a lot worse when I need to pee and when I am going, I am constantly taking time off work and being a manager of a department in a hotel Im sure people think Im skiving all the time.

Do I have to live with this forever ?

Hi I understand completely where you are with this, I also have recurrent kidney infections and have had kidney stones twice.

It does sound that you may have a stone..sometimes they will pass by themselves or the doctor may give you something to disolve it or help pass it.

my Gp put me on a long term antibiotic that is 90% chance of stopping the infections recurring but i was on it 8 months and when i finished i got a kidney infection weeks after,it went on for 2 weeks, then it dissappeared but today i feel that familer horrible feeling that it is returning. but those antibiotics could work for you.ask your doc about longterm antibiotics, they are milder than normal so not harmfull.

the chemist recommed great sachets for me to take instead of always on antibiotics and if you take them at start it may stop infection growing, the name of them are cystopurin. try them and have a pack on standby.

take a sachet in water 3 times a day for 2 days.

it has pure cranberry extract in it so works better than drinking just juice.

I am so sick of these and the doctor is sending me for tests .

    hope this helps. evey

Thank you ! Its good to talk to someone who knows what Im going through, I still feel rough today and to top it off have a stinking cold so another day off work.

I have taken cystopurin in the past, the problem is these days the infection doesnt even start as a UTI it just goes bang straight into the kidneys with that terrible pain in my side along with all the other symptoms. I will find out if I can drink it , being pregnant I have to be so careful about what I have

Im moving house in a few weeks and will be changing doctors, I think Im going to insist they refer me to a Urologist as the doctors Im with at the moment seem to just fob me off each time I try to ask.

I hope that you feel better soon

I have suffered from kidney infections for 40 years since i was 2 years old it was only 18 months ago after years of illness and pain and a barrage of test by the doctor and even being told i was a hyprochondriac by one GP that I decided to get another opinion and go Private.

The consultant sent me for a scan where they inject fluid into you and then scan your kidneys and they found the tube from the kidney to the bladder on the left side was not connected and caused a buildup of waste in the kidney.

Because it had got so bad i had to have surgery the consultant found my kidney was full of puss and stones, yet the local hospital had done a scan the month before and said my kidney was normal.

My blood pressure went back to normal after being high for several years straight after the op.

The downside is because the problem wasnt sorted earlier i now have scarring on my kidney and suffer regularly from kidney infections, my kidney bleeds continuosly and i have constant pain in my left side.

Please note kidney infections are not always detectable in a urine sample so if your doctor tells you your urine test was clear it does not mean you do not have a kidney infection.

I was in hospital again in june with kidney infection as my blood pressure dropped and i had low sodium, i take 200mg of triprothmum not sure if i have spelt that right , daily but it is no longer working now am now on 1500mg a day of cefolexin and have to go for another scan on thursday.

Some days i don't even have the energy to get out of bed. My main point i want to make to to anyone with kidney infection or pain is do not give up and be fobbed off by doctors if the pain is getting too bad and the doctor cant find anything wrong go to your A & E department or get a 2nd opinion a private doctor in uk charges approx £60 for a consultation if you feel the need for a 2nd opinion it is well worth it.

hope you feel better soon and keep on to your doctor until they find the cause as there is always a reason for kidney pain.
