12/23/17 Hip pain still after 12 weeks post op Anterior right hip

Hello all. I  have not had one day pain free after 10 weeks.

I did go to an  week follow up and they said all looks ok on the xray, and scar looks pretty ( which I think looks hideous).

The pain had shifter from pre op inner thigh now to about one inch to the outside of the incision.

Painful to walk and do household work. If I do alot of work the pain is intolerable the next day.

I have had shooting electrical burning pains from scar, and they gave me some gapentulum? to take for nerve damage.

I am sooo disheartened. I am an original ADHD person, who is on the move the whole day.I don't smile much because of the pain, and I cannot get by more than 6 hours without having to take Hydrocodone for sharp pain.

Dr. and assistant say everyone heals differently.

40 years ago gymnast and cheerleader in college, have had 2 kids so I thought i was pretty good with pain.

At 62, I am wondering if pain will ever be gone, and I can get back to normal.Would love to hear from someone on this.

Happy Thanksgiving November 23, 2017.

    Hi Sandy,

I am 11 weeks.  Still have won in my knee.  Why?!  Before my hi replacement no pain in my knee.  I’ll just wait it out.  Many comments say it takes time.

    Regards,

    Steve

Not sure I can help since my TLHR is due to a fall and I  fractured it. Instead of a fix which may not have worked I opted for a total left hip replacement so never really had bad hip until I fell and fractured it but I  would say ice it and elevate it if you can in between doing things and don't do too much. From reading posts on this forum it sounds like healing takes a good 6 months. Also that GabePenten will definitely help nerve pain but it made me sleepy.

Hi Sandy. Have you tried walking? I’ve had some pain in groin and to the side of my scar and I’m 1 year op. I just had my other side done in Nov 13.

I have noticed that walking works a lot better than physical therapy for me. I wish I had been able to walk more but it was either the hot weather here or the pain to my other hip before my recent surgery. What also helped a lot was deep tissue massaging of my thigh.

Physical therapy actually gave me more pain.

I hope things turn around for you. I know what it’s like looking forward to pain free hips and then we end up with different pain afterwards.

    Hi Sandymrs,

Don’t think you are alone. I am almost 10 weeks and can’t go as long as you without pain meds! I still do pt and some housework but mostly sit and rest on the bed. My pain is achy although still a sharp pain if I move wrong.  I too take gabapentin at night although I still wake up about 2am or so and need pain meds. I ice the pain frequently too.

My doc and Physio said I was in the middle of the pack-not leading not following. I take that as I am a B student.  I don’t think you need to worry. Im lucky that my husband also thinks im doing fine. Did you break your femur or hip before the total hip? I did. I’d rather have the THR!!!  Good luck.

    Hi Sandy

Sorry for your pain. I am 6 months post-op and nearly painfree, except when I do too much. For me walking is the best medicine. I am still using a cane for short distances and a walker when I want to take my little dog for a walk. I too had a lot of pain in my knee and I have a theory about that. The muscles in and around the hip gets cut during surgery and are very weak for a long time, so all our weight is carried on the knee and the knee says: "no no no I can't do that"  As the hip muscles get stronger the strain on the knee is less and less and for me right now the knee is a happy knee, no more pain there. It takes time Sandy try to be patient - I know it is not easy, I too get very unhappy at times, but as long as it gets just a little bit better every day it is ok - chin up girl you will get there.

Thank you to you 5 who answered so quickly. I don't feel so alone now.

The DR.'s and others were actually making feel guilty for needing pain medication.

I did not break hip prior to surgery, but did have a bad fall, in October 2016, and lived with the pain for about a year before deciding doctors were not just telling me to have hip replacement to earn the (shock) close to $75,000 that I saw on the insurance bill.

I have tried to woe is me, why me I am a good person route, so I was not a good patient, and still a bit mad at the world for having to go through this.

I had to give up my 29 year flight attendant job, so I am lost because of that also.

So dealing with physical pain, feel guilty for not bouncing back as so many of the commenters on these web sites who seem like miracle hips.

I do walk alot in an around my house, but it s hilly, so if I walk alot , It really hurts in the afternoon and at night.

And ooooh...cann NOT get comfortable sleeping. Have to take Ambien to get to sleep.

So much pain and sleep stuff just to get by. very ds-heartening.

72 days post op acutally, today 1/24/2017

I think the hills are killing you. My walk into the city center is slighly, just slightly downhill. When I was doing walking for physical therapy after the THR is, I walked into town and then called my husband and he came and picked me up with the car to take me home. I found the slight uphill walk home brought on a lot of pain. You might try driving to a more level area and doing your dailiy walking on a more level area until you build those muscles back up again.

I am 11 weeks anterior thr. Im 54 years old. Was very active until my right hip started hurting. Cross fit, swimming, hiking, biking. I have been in pain every day for almost 3 years. Finally had thr in April 2018 everything was good until 3 weeks after when I started having horrible groin pain. So bad I had to use crutches. Dr. Told me it was normal, take it easy, stay on crutches. 2 months later, I'm still crutches! I have pain down my leg, in my ground and in my hip. Its like I never had the surgery. I feel defeated and depressed.I'm tired all the time, I can't do anything fun, go places with friends or family. Is this just my life now? My head goes to a dark place, I'm miserable.

      Uugh, Theodore!

I hate to say I'm happy there's someone going through the same thing I am, but.... I feel alone in this pain.

I'm on one crutch these days. I'm trying to use/rely on it less thinking maybe it will hold me back if I stay on it. Just try to walk a bit each day on my own. Paying attention to my posture and how I use my right leg (keep it straight, heal toe, keep my gate forward) my hip and thigh fatigue quickly tho. Forget any leg stuff at the gym! Too pain full! I try to stay positive. I have bad days, I cried a lot today, pity party. Pray it gets better, I'll pray for you too.

I'm so sorry you too have had a bad go at it. I was so excited to finally get the surgery and now I'm depressed and in worse pain. Getting a second opinion next week. Back for more dry needling as well.

Let's please keep in touch. Its so good to talk to someone who gets it! Take care. It can't be forever.

HI. I realize it's been like 3 years since this post, but I wanted to see if you ever got any improvement. I am 11 weeks post op and much much worse than prior to surgery. I've had CT scans and xrays and all is normal. I got some injections that did not help. My pain is to the left of my incision toward the hip, and deep inside and it's a hot, burning and poking. It's brutal.
