12 weeks post surgery / sudden bad pain

Posted , 2 users are following.

I had surgery on the 30th Jan 2017 on my right shoulder .they removed my bursa and shaved the bone and widened something . Been having physio since ( had previously had loads and injections too) the consultant was happy with my progress when I saw them 2 weeks ago . Last night ( evening onwards) I've been in agony to the point I was crying . Radiated down my arm too . Still hurting this morning . I don't understand as I've not done anything different to my knowledge. It came on pretty suddenly . Anyone advise ?

Oh boy, this does not sound enjoyable.  Just to be on the safe side have you contacted your doctor or the doctor's nurse for advice?  Are you in PT?  Have you started new exercises in physical therapy?  Are you using anti-inflammatory (Aleve) meds and pain reliever (Tylenol)?  Are you icing?  Stay calm.  Good luck and post an update when you have time!

Yes I started physio 2 weeks after op and doing some excerises after 4/5 days at home after op. I did start a new class on Tuesday that involved more excerises but it was Saturday when it hurt like hell ( it did hurt a little on the Wednesday but not half as bad as Saturday night . I've got painkillers yes . I'm on morphine daily for another condition I have too . I'm taking a really good anti inflammatory.

Wow!  Just wondering, has your doctor okayed all the activity?

Not sure what you mean . They want you exercising as soon as possible . It's part of the rehabilitation

"started a new class"  that's what I meant.  I am 12 weeks out, and I only manage PT 3x a week 1-1.5 hours each time along with 45-60 minutes of daily home PT.  I do not use one of those CPM devices.  I do the old fashioned exercises at home.  I return to work Monday with restrictions.

I guess my surgery is different.  I suffered "massive" tears from an "acute" injury.  I guess we all have a different twist on the reason for our surgery and recovery.

I was given ZERO movement instructions from my specialist after the repair for two weeks.  Started PT the third week.  Only made it once that week. Too much pain.  Again it's all different for each of us based on our injury and need for surgery.  Good luck to you.

Clare I had the same surgery as you with the addition of a rotator cuff debridement on the 8th April

I understood at my first Physio that I could do what I was able without pushing in to resistance and pain

I have done remarkable well pain wise That was up to yesterday forgetting and stretched back to unfasten my Bra I had also reached up into a cupboard to put some plates away

Like you I have had a lot of pain overnight so have put my arm back in the sling to rest it and remind me I have had pain over my deltoid since the surgery more or less like I had previously

Did you have a rotator cuff tear I had but as it.was very ragged he was unable to repair it

If you have not done anything out of the ordinary I would doubt you have done anything major

As others have said ice it take your medication and see your GP or if you are in the US maybe your Consultant I am having Physio from a shoulder Physio You could talk to them and probably they would see you and work out what the problem is Try and do this ASAP

Today I will be cautious and see what my Physio says tomorrow Had I had a repair to the cuff I.would be very concerned

Good luck Hang in there all will be well in the end

See this as a bit of a setback

    Good luck Sue

Hi Susan . No I had no tear. I'm in the uk . I had physio on Tuesday and I struggled this week but pain hasn't been too bad . I did mention it to the physiotherapists on Tuesday and they said it will happen where I get bad days . I don't see my consultant for over 2 months

Thanks for that I had Physio and was told that whilst there.is not much to.see on the outside I have had a lot of work inside

Pain I am not bad and he was pleased with the range of movement in my shoulder

I am seeing my Consultant on 3rd May just over 3 weeks

If you are worried you could speak again to the Physio or maybe they would bring your appt forward I have got some extra exercises added in Have appts until 25th May and 2 are hydrotherapy

I hope your severe pain has a blip and that it will settle Hang in there All will be well Sue

Hi, I have endured three surgeries on the same shoulder in the last year. I found that the pain rose and fell and finally died away for good around 16-18 weeks postop. I got a lacrosse ball and massage it up and down my arm, esp in the biceps groove, across the deltoid, and around the scapular muscles at the back whenever the deep nervy pain crops up. You could give that a try. I also use a tens machine every night before bed, I am still using it at five months postop.
