12 weeks update!!

Hello all, I want to give a positive update and hopefully encourage some people out there that might be sitting on the fence like I was about whether or not to have the surgery. I am now 12 weeks post anterior approach LTHR and starting to feel like my old self. I still get tired, stiff with nerve pains occasionally BUT my mobility has really taken off this last week. I went hiking in the woods with my husband, can climb short flight of stairs unaided, and finally was able to tie my shoes myself today...WOW...what a great feeling. I am so grateful to God, my Surgeon(s), all the nurses, my family, friends and co-workers, all the people on this forum who I have gained support and information and of course my Husband who helped me so much with my recovery....

Congratulation for a great story of recovery. It great to hear positive results and many who have been thru the hippy journey can truly  identify with your encouraging words.

More mountains left to climb. Back to life as usual. I love walking thru the woods nothing like a good nature walk to recharge our spirits!

Thank you so much for your kind words! Yes many more mountains to climb. Today was the first day while walking through a huge furniture store that I felt like my new hip was mine! It is a journey I learned quickly enough.

A few more weeks and soon your brain will be trained to the new hip.

Soon you'll not give it a thought because all the training physical and mental will come automatically without a single thought og THR.

I forgot I had hip implant while walking thru metal detector as a juror. They sent me back thru the metal detector three times till I finally remember it was my hip.

True story wow were there a few annoyed peops in line behind me!

Great to hear your experience. I’m 6.5 weeks. Haven’t tried tying a shoelace yet but I can put my socks on easily for the first time in months. And I painted a wall a couple of days ago, which involved using a stepladder and going down on my hands and knees.

Went for a walk in the woods today with my brother and our dogs. Walking off the path I was tripped up by a root and fell over onto my operated hip, despite having a walking stick with me to help my balance. I think I was pushed onto my operated leg, which just wasn’t strong enough to hold me up. All I could think of as I went down was that I might dislocate my hip and to try to fall as gently as possible! Luckily the ground was soft and grassy and I managed a sort of judo-roll as I went down (have lots of practice with falling in the past as a not too competent skier lol).

Thank goodness I was shaken but unharmed, although I had to get pulled up again which wasn’t very dignified. It shook me up a bit I can tell you. However, my brother pointed out that it was a good thing as it should give me confidence my new hip is fairly secure.

    Hi Kelly.

I am 2 weeks post opp right now and being able to get around okay with a walker. My question is how long until you were walking without Anything? Also. Was There any discrepancies with your leg length?

Hi Tanya, keep in mind I had anterior approach done which can decrease the amount of time to use the mobility aids. I was walking using the walker for approximately 3 weeks; graduated to using cane then back to work @ 4 weeks using the cane for stairs and occasionally at work when my leg was tired and sore. No, thank goodness I did not have any leg length difference, I did have however, some nerve damage that I still am dealing with. Hope things progress for you the same as it has for me, good luck!

      Hi Tanya

I had a conventional lateral op. Was only on a walker the first morning, then two crutches. Was told at 4 weeks I could just use a stick, then from 6 weeks nothing (but I still use a stick outside if I get tired).

It it all depends on how you are recovering. I think if you were reasonably fit beforehand it helps, but everyone is different. You shouldn’t go onto a stick until you can walk without a limp. Be guided by your physiotherapist as only they can judge your individual needs.
