13 days after THR Revision Feel Better

Posted , 3 users are following.

Feeling much better today.😁

Off Percocet and dealing well with healing.

I'm 48 and in the CA.

Had my revision because my socket was to large for my setup so I had tendon issues in the groin.  Iliopsoas Tendonosis/tendinosis or tendonitis.  You can search it for more info.   Basically my tendon that runs from lower spine weaves through pelvis and across the area where the ball of the implant attaches then heads down to the inner thigh was rubbing, too tense/tight and caused major pain in my thigh when irritated.

Anyway, today a I am walking without walker very slowly but feel steady and able.  Went to breakfast and to the bank.  Then back home for rest and icing.

Feeling great, just waiting for the swelling to go down and see what's really going on.

I gave so much bruising my hip looks like Frankenstein gas had fun with me.  Colors of my bum are not pretty and my inner thigh is still full of settling blood that my body will absorb when it has the chance.

So YaY to better days after surgery!!

You sure seem like you're doing quite well dispite what you have been through.

Thirteen days post surgery and can get around without walker is tremendous progress. Your attitude is very upbeat and positive. You should be very proud of yourself.

I had my thr and revision done in California as well. The revision removed my left behind. I'm ok with that, beyond string bikinis. Haha

Just found out I will need 3rd thr, one on my "good" side. I dread the agony, the use of pain pills. I cannot go through that without opiods.

What bothers me the most, I don't know if I have the physical strength to make a full recovery.

I will remember your spunk and spirit...Remember your positive outlook.

    Be well, mary

      You can do it Mary!

Trust me, coming out of surgery this time I kept asking myself what had possessed me to do this again.  The pain is horrible but it does get better everyday.

I know in a couple months I'll be way better then I am now as far as swelling and healing.

I am staying grateful and positive, have my moments but I'be got to get on with living!😃😁

Thanks Mary and Best Of Everything!!

This is the first post I have seen which seems to be about my symptoms. I have struggled for 10 months since my THR. My consultant has admitted to increasing the length and offset which has caused a "stretch on the muscles and soft tissues" - ie he has put the implant in too tight. The impact for me is that I can do exercises to loosen up and strengthen lots on my legs and gluteals -  but any movement that involves bending and picking up, climbing stairs up or walking up slopes puts me into mind bending deep pain -deep inside the hip - I describe it as like deep inside where my pantie line is at the back and in the front of the groin. Its sharp and sore as hell and doesnt recede quickly once provoked.

Would you mind telling me if this is this the same pain you had?

Who gave you the diagnosis and how was it made?

How long was it left before they decided on a revision?

Very best wishes for your recovery

      Hi Chris,

      Where are you located?

I wasn't aware but right before my 3 month my OS let me know we needed to get in for revision within 90 days.

I've read and heard that sometimes the tendons do eventually relax and you can do moves to relax them but if you are getting it from the front and back, you are worse then I was.  I only occasionally had deep in back but I know what you're talking about.  Mine was all the flexor group in the front.

What does your OS say about revision?  I know it's a horrible thought.  How old are you?  They can release the tendons and give you relieve.  Have they diagnosed you using the injections directly into the tendons or muscles?

I hope you get answers as chronic pain is not what you went through the THR for ..

Make some calls and find out your options.

      Best of everything,

      JILL

      2nd reply,

When they did the diagnosis on me they used an xray machine laying the needle on my thigh and taking pictures back to back til they knew, they had the right area or tendon and then placed the shot directly in there.

I had 12 hours of relief and that was the correct tendon (problematical) one.

Yours seems a little more forward.

      Hi  Jill

I was a fit hockey playing running rock climbing skiing 50 yr old when the problem hit and 51 when I had the operation in Dec 13. Pain so bad somedays life is rubbish. Am in UK. OS is the leading one in area. Says it could take 2 years to loosen up. I am self employed so it is financially awful right now - cant work and the meds are mind bending...meanwhile other hip also turns out to be a birth defect and needs to be treated

Can you please give me more details about the diagnositcs you had - I have had an ultrasound but that has shown nothing. I think I need to be pushing suggestions at my OS as we now are just into monitoing and some physio - and it feels a bit like marking time. I cannot live with this pain the rest of my life. I cannot lift things, bend down or get up the stairs without bringing it on. ;(

All my xrays were normal too.   Did you see my other post about the diagnostic for me.

WoW, sounds horrible what you are going through and for how long .  I have heard they eventually relax but I have also read where 9 yrs down the road there are still people wiyh the same debilitating pain.

You are still young and I know you need to get back to work.  I would press my OS and ask about revision.

Can you get a second opinion, I don't know how it works there but I would be pretty ____ if I had to keep living in such pain because the surgeon made a mistake.  I hear they are very busy over there but that shouldn't mean you have to go on living in severe pain.

My Surgeon was really set on figuring out what was wrong with me and fixing it.  I am grateful to him and realize these things happen to the best of surgeons, because they want you to be stable, your young still, so they put in the biggest ball but sometimes it's too big.

Can he send you for deep tissue massage to help stretch those tendons and muscles?  I almost opted out of surgery every time I went in because it felt so much more relaxes after.

I wish I could help you more.  I'm thinking your surgeon is the one to talk to.

      Keep trying!!

Not sure why they moderated that last post.

Anyway, did you see the other post about the shots directly into the tendons?

All my xrays came back normal also .  These surgeons are smart but I don't believe they realize how much pain these cause when they are too tight.

If you press him about downsizing your implant what does he say?

You are young so he wanted you to be stable and placed the largest ball probably as with myself because he knew you would be active.  Sometimes they are too big though.  My implant was removed and at first they tried an implant with a shorter neck to bring my thigh closer into my body thus relaxing the tension on the soft tissues.  This didn't work because then my thigh bone would have hit my pelvis and caused all kinds of other problems.  So they pulled that out and went to a smaller ball.  From a 40 to a 36 I believe he said.  I asked him if he had to Chang the cup and he said no, because we are talking some small changes and the cup was designed to hold a range of ball heads.  My groin is very swollen still so I don't know if this has been my saving surgery but it sure feels like it has.  My groin isn't causing me excrutiating pain when a I try to lift my leg anymore, it just doesn't work yet.

Did you have that tightness and snapping forward of your leg when you were walking too?   Like a slingshot kind of.

I feel like this has helped me and future is looking bright.  Like you I just want to get back to living and semi pain free since we already know we will live with some.

I feel for you my friend I hope you can get this handled soon.

      Hi Christine,

I am also in the UK and have had an ultra sound which showed nothing plus a variety of other tests, xrays and injections. None has cured my pain. I've now demanded my GP sent me for an opinion of a surgeon in a different NHS hospital and am waiting for an MRI to diagnose whether I have illionopsis tendonitis or whether, as the first surgeon who did my op believes, I'm imagining the pain. If only he could feel what I feel he'd know it was real pain.

The surgeon that I'm now under says that even if the diagnosis is correct he may not be able to correct it surgically and it may be a case of therapy to stretch the ligaments and nerve out.

I don't know, all I do know is that I don't want to spend the rest of my life with this terrible pain. I went for a THR to be made pain free and have landed up with far worse pain than I ever had before the operation.

I need my other hip replacing but cannot go through another nightmare like this one I'm going through now, it's been 18 months of sheer hell.

I hope you get sorted out soon, don't take NO for an answer. I waited far too long before I demanded my rights to see a second surgeon which you are entitled to under the NHS.

Keep in touch and let us know how you get on. Jay

Relieved things are improving. Time will deal w swelling. Must put feet up 3 x p day.did you see my earlier post about the compression leg massager?   They are much cheaper in the US.  My swelling was v bad and this contraption was the ultimate in comfort and swelling reduction. SO important is the circulation in the legs.  My implant is too large also and I put my pain and slow healing down to that. If you were uk based I'd send it, but I may need it in future when other side is too far gone!

I cannot impress enough on circulation. The French get physio massage 3x p wk. icing cools remember. You need to get the blood flowing and lymph drainage...

hope yr progress goes exponentially. You have age on your side.

      Thank you  Gentilleschi😆

I will look into the compression machine I would love to have one of those and do need it.

I will def get in and get the massages rolling as soon as I can stand to be poked.  On your advice I'll bump that up a bit.   I'll call my Dr's office and see about where they can send me.  Last time after the second week I was started on Physical Therapy but there was no massage unfortunately.   Which I didn't understand.   I would go around the corner for $20 massage +tip so 25 or 30,  but could only do that 1 a week as its $$.  Those help more then anything else tho I do swear by massage.

Thank you for lookin out for me I appreciate and will head your advice.

      Hugs,

      JiLL
