13 year old scoliosis concerns

Hello all. My daughter has been under the weather the past few weeks and today was having pains in her back and abdomen so I left work and took her to a Dr. He took an x ray because of the pain in her stomach and found she has what I feel is a pretty severe case of scoliosis. He did not want to comment on how bad he thinks it is because he is not an expert. He insisted on referring me to a regional specialist so now we wait for the call to set the appointment. I have a picture of the x ray but am not sure it can be added here. If it can be, would anyone be willing to take a look at it for comparisons to what you or your loved ones have experienced?

Stevie, can you please be more specific about how to send private messages. I want to help people but don't want public postings. Thank you.

Jason, your daughter is so lucky to have such a caring father, and I may have some very encouraging information for you. I recently had adult scoliosis surgical correction, and have tried many alternative non surgical methods. They rarely work, but there are unscrupulous practioners that can be very convincing, so be careful. However, they have just started doing a new procedure for adolescents that is miraculous. I believe it is called Magec, but I am not sure. But here is what I read about it: the right surgeon can insert magnetic rods into your daughter's back. After this is done, they use a magnet and slowly, every month pull the curve out until her spine is straight, at which point the rods are removed. Also if her curve is less than 30 degrees, and it is watched closely, it is unlikely that it will progress. Please research this procedure before you fuse her spine. She will continue to grow, but the rods can break because they cannot accommodate the changes in her body. I am not a medical practioner, have no degree whatsoever, so I am not qualified or legally able to advise you. All I can do is pass on information that I hope may help you, but cannot be held responsible for any decision you ultimately make. All I can tell you is that a lot of children sadly have pain their entire lives after surgery, so you are on the right path reaching out for answers. The internet is your best friend. Good luck to you. LVG

Hello everyone. Sorry for just now getting back. Basketball games for my son etc has kept me moving around the clock.

I picked up her X ray disk and report from the Dr this morning for her appointment with the specialist on Jan. 3rd. In his report, he notes "approx 38* t12-l1 between superior template and oft10 and inferior template l3". He also stressed to me that he is no expert, so his figures are approximate. I still have not figured out how to PM pictures.

I think by God's grace, she has a close friend who recently had surgery. She is doing great and loved her Dr, the same one my daughter will be seeing. Her friend told her all about everything to help put her mind at ease. My daughter is a worrier with anxiety issues. She's the girl in class who cries over a 99% grade, is very easily hurt and cries at the thought of pain. I know everyone says this about their kids, but she really does have the sweetest heart.

Whatever the Dr decides, and I will be sure to get a 2nd opinion just to be safe, I'm confident she will be great.

Thanks again for all the replies. I really appreciate it!
