14 Days post Op.

Morning folks, well here we are again, 14 days post op, Left THL. still up at 3am, very hard to sleep on my back for long,  sitting in the Lounge,  me the dog and a cup of tea, still got elephant leg, I can hear my lovely wife snooring in the bedroom (we live in a Bungalow) but hey, no more pains in the back that I had before the op. walking around with one crutch, cant wait to get too work on the alotment  but just sitting/standing  at a table in the garden potting up plants etc. I have too do something sitting around all day is not for me. So anyone out there wondering wether to have the op. or not, My advice is to bite the bullet and have it done. Its over before you know it, your up the next day, most of your pains have gone and you feel a little better as each day passes, although a slow process, but its better than limping in pain every day and not sleeping because of pain !!. Well I think I,ll have another cuppa !!.

God bless

    Morning Brian,

Coulnt agree more with you. Yes, going ahead with the op will make your future and quality of life a lot better. Ok, in the short term the swollen legs, poor sleep may want to put one off but get through that stage then so worthwhile as no back, groin, leg pains everyday.  I was again up at 3am with usual brew and my dear wife and two moggies snoring their heads off, but I feel so much better and happier. Although when I ring my 'please may I have a cuppa' bell.....no one listens...oh well, back to the kettle and make another.  Happy Easter and good luck and best wishes to all and soon to be hippies.

      Hi

i have one of those bells too.sometimes hubby hears it and sometimes not!  I am finding that because I am so active it drives me mad but it was good to jump off the bandwagon for a while and regroup. Sleeping is the worse thing for me but I just have to make it up during the day.  I have just recommended the op to a dear friend despite the challenge of exercises, sleeping on your back and a pain in the bum!!!

Morning everyone. I'm 8 days post op and got out of hospital on Wednesday. I had my left knee and right hip replaced so I know I've got a hard road ahead of me. I don't feel confident enough to tackle the stairs so I'm sleeping on a very comfortable bed settee. Sleep is very elusive at times but I'm getting very acquainted with late night radio. Any advice gratefully received! Good luck everyone confused

Hello Brian.  I used packet of frozen peas on my swollen leg.  It's uncomfortable but it did help.  Isn't it wonderful to lie on ones side again ?  I have never wanted anything so much as to turn over in bed.  Silly isn't it ?

    Hi Brian

I found putting a pillow under my knee of operated side helps. Plus a tramadol at bedtime!

Not sure how long it is before its ok to roll over and sleep on side again but can't wait!

All the very best, summer will be a wonderful pain free season this year for many.

What you need is a new hobby for when you have to sit down for a rest.

Stamp collecting has got very cheap due to good old ebay, lots of grandkids selling grandads old albums!

Coin collecting, start with pre decimal and look for that elusive 1933 penny!

...or just get on this forum and tell us how it is going, the sun is shining somewhere in the World so someone will be up looking at the forum with you.

Afternoon power napping is the way forward ! Splash out on a La-z-boy chair and take it easy.

Happy Easter all and keep up the exercises.

I rolled up a towel and put it under my knees to lift them up a bit and found it relaxes the knees and I was able to sleep much better after that.  A couple more weeks and you will soon be snoring your way through the night.

    Hi Brian

I expect time seems slow to you at the moment but I am 10 weeks post op today and looking back it seems ages ago and only a short while in the scheme of things. You are doing brilliantly, just go with it and soon you'll be back in the potting shed.

About 5-6 weeks is the usual time for people to really turn the corner and you 'll find yourself in the potting shed then I'm sure.

I am now walking outside with just 1 crutch mainly for support and after a while I have a bit of a limp but I think in a couple of weeks I won't need that. Yesterday I went out walking with my photography friends birdwatching, I did have a fold up seat with me, but I also walked quite a long way and I'm driving quite happily every day so have got my independence back.

I accidentally slept on my side about 4 weeks when I wasn't feeling very well, so carefully continued, it was bliss.my consultant said at 6 weeks it was fine to sleep on my side, I think that is the hardest thing, the not sleeping and laying on your back, I also had nerve pain in my good leg but all a distant dream now, I just used to sit up in bed and read ( I live alone) so no probs with waking anyone else up lol !

Continue with the good work and have a lovely Easter.

hi Brian glad to here your feeling so well iam also 14 days post op, i was dreading trying to sleep on my back but the hospital said no we don,t state that anymore you can sleep on my side the op side, mind you the first night they just plied me with morphine, i was out in 3 days but i think it was a bit to soon, as both my hips have gone it was a flip of the coin which one they did first, this being the case 7 days post op i fell in doors 999 and A & E fortunately did not damage the new hip, swelling has now gone but i an still  not able to put my weight on that leg without pain, it will be interesting compereing our progress as we are the same day op. mine was at epsom EOC i am looking forward for them to do my other hip they told me 3 months roll on

Hi Ron, My op. was at Leicester City General Hospital, they were great, I only have kind words to say about all of the staff. yes they do insist that we only sleep on our backs for the first 6 weeks, until we have our first follow up oppointment with the Consultant, which in my case will be 7 weeks. Sorry to hear about you fall mate, I'm sure you will soon be up and around again, and best wishes when you have the next one done,

Hi Brian I agree the staff at the EOC were brillant got nothing but praise for them, it strange how they vary i've some people have had a spine block so were awake durring there surrgery I had a general, being I was already on quite a lot of pain releif before the op they also sent me home with some oral morphine and that made a lot of differance, I read another post here about putting a pillow between your knee's, I have used for ages a special shapped memory foam pillow which fits between my knees and turns over with me, if I could find out how to post a picture on here I could send you a photo, I am working on the assumption that my fall put me back about a week etc so I will be following your progress hopeing to ctach you up lol

    Best Regards

I am one week post op THR. My leg is twice the size of my non- operated leg and feels tight and achey, anyone know how long that will take? It's

really difficult to get a comfy position when sleeping or when sitting.

Feeling frustrated! Have made progress but hard to imagine functioning normally again!

Hi Tracey, sit with your swollen leg up to reduce the swelling a bit but it varies with different people how long it takes to go down I think, mine was swollen but not too much and I think it was like that for 2-3 weeks before it started to go down, but it will so be patient. The tightness will go too in time but its very early days for you yet. You will function normally again even better than you did before so relax and take it easy for the time being and you will see, it will get better. I'm 10 weeks and walking outside no crutches, driving etc
