14 yo had fracture, displacement and surgery 5 weeks ago. Gets out of cast in 9 days. She's had almost no pain the whole five weeks. Is resting her foot on the ground now with a little pressure and has no pain. Hasn't since she broke it. Is that a good sign that recovery and rehab may be fast? She can't wait fo get back to her sports.

So glad your daughter has not experienced a lot of pain. It does sound like she is healing well and that she will be back to normal in time. Time is the key factor here. I encourage you to make sure she follows the doctor's recommendations regarding physical activity. I have read that returning to physical activity sooner than one should may cause arthritis in the joint later on. I am not a physician, so I may be wrong. But I did rear two children and know that teenagers do not always adhere to limits.

Hi Megan,
Also a bimalleolar fracture here (no surgery). My experience may or may not be similar to what your 14 year old is in store for.
I was in a boot, non weight bearing, for about 6 weeks. No pain in foot during this time.
When doctor released me for full weight bearing is when fun began (pain in walking, though not severe). The pain and difficulty was, as I later found out, from a damaged tendon that was collateral damage from my fracture injury.
The good news is that the child's youth stands her in good stead for a chance at more rapid healing, and hopefully, a full recovery. That said, if she sustained considerable soft tissue damage besides the fracture then recovery could be a bit more challenging.
