15 year old diagnosed

My 15 year old big bad football player was diagnosed with NS a week before Christmas. Jackson is 6’4” 285 lbs, wears a size 16 shoe, and starts as the center for the 12 th grade.  This is the most difficult thing I have ever done! At first he wrote all his sodium down and stayed within the 2000 mg a day limit. He dropped 30 lbs., most of it being fluid, and protein was very little in his urine. Now he has become angry about this. He is sneaking bad stuff when I am not with him. His protein is up, his bp is up, and my stress level is to the max! How do I do this with a head strong, know it all 15 year old????? Help!!!

    Hello Brandy,

Has your son's doctor explained to him what the NS may lead to if left unchecked? Maybe he should hear it from the doctor that he is in for very painful few years before inevitable kidney transplant and possibly death. NS is usually easy to treat and control, gaining weight will make it worse and harder to treat though. Your son will have to make a choice between his life or very short rugby/football(?) career. It is important that you lay it out hard to him, there is no need for him to suffer and undergo unnecessary treatment.

I hope that whether you choose to be harsh with him or not, he will see reason. Remember not to worry too much, NS is not a lethal disease.

You are going to have to balance this information with your own mind.

Jonah Lomu was an International rugby  Star, He too suffered from NS as I do, he took an ill advised kidney transplant, and never recovered.!

I was diagnosed four years ago, after 60 years of ill health. No one ever checked my protein levels. Jackson is lucky to have the diagnosis. He can live through this and have a normal life, it just takes care; that's all .

Last June someone bought me a 38 oz steak cooked in salt, took me 3 months to get through the illness, and I was lucky, I should have just said, No thank you.!

Regards, and good luck both E

What i did I took all salt out and replaced it with Mrs. Dash seasonings spices marinades sauces everything. Let know he can eat salt just not as much. If he does he will further agitate his kidneys. Being that I have a 6 yr old he does have his moments but i always remind him the times he was bloated and in the hospital and getting pricked and poked by doctors. So I now its worse but just be patient with him. My doc told me told he let him do everything he was doing before just watch him. I hate water so we drink flavored water. When we make popcorn i use the popcorn seasonings with lower sodium levels. The only thing with my little one is he keeps a cold for 2-3 weeks. But i hope that helps. Take care and good luck!
