19 weeks since ankle microfracture + arthriscopy

Hi everyone. As the title states, its been 19 weeks since I underwent ankle microfracture + arthriscopy surgery. It was done to basically remove a large portion of cartilage which was damaged after I had a bad fall while rock climbing last april. Generally pain wise during recovery has been good. I've been walking and standing almost all the time with no pain which has been a breath of fresh air as before surgery it was the total opposite. I've been seeing a PT every few weeks and doing exercises at home. I've recently started cycling almost 2 weeks ago. I've been reassured by the PT thats its safe for me to do this. For some reason yesterday I've started to experience more pain than usual during this recovery. I was on my bike today for a bit (first time in like 10 days as I've been ill), and now my ankle is hurting when I use it to the point where it hasnt been like this since before surgery. I'm just really scared now and depressed since pain wise I've been really good since surgery and I dont get why this is happening. I'm just curious if anyone reading this has experience with this surgery or with this injury(ankle cartilage damage). I'm just really worried my ankle is damaged again after whats been a good recovery up to this point, and I already when through so much chaos and stress after the injury

Yes, I had surgery 2 years ago to stabilise my ankle and while in the surgeon removed cartlidge pieces and then shaved it, hoping it would regenerate. The stabilisation was a success. The cartlidge was not. I had zero regeneration and pain. it progressively got a little better but I had to watch the ground whenever I walked as the "shock buffer" was gone. I continued like this until recently when I had my ankle fused. No joint, no pain. 13 wks post op and know the fusion was a great idea. Have nerve damage, that I now need repaired, but do not regret the fusion.

    All the best! 😁

good to hear about your fusion op. I should probably consider the fusion in that case if the regeneration hasn't been successfull. Are you walking freely without any crutches?

Yes. I started walking about 10 wks post op. I'm 49 now so 47 when it was shaved. I heard horror stories and Physio's don't want you getting fusions but they don't live with the fear of walking on a rock wrong and being in agony.

Hey, how do you feel now? I had a microfracture on my left ankle about 8 months ago. The recovery was slow but steady until three weeks ago. Now my condition is worse than 3-month ago. I can barely walk 1 mile. Sad!
