2 1/2 Years Sick, 2 surgeries, sinuses totally clear no taste / smell

Hello. I'm 52, never really been sick before all this. I've been sick now for more than 2 1/2 years. I've seen nine different specialists, five family doctors. I've had two surgeries countless amounts of bloodwork, CAT scans, and MRIs. I had IGG treatments, took about nineteen, yes, nineteen rounds of steroids and endless other medications and still no one can figure out why my sinuses are still giving me trouble even though they are totally clear (and I saw them myself). I have no taste or smell and my head is totally congested. The doctors have pretty much given up on me and have told me there's nothing more they can do. I'm desperate and depressed. I don't know where to go to find answers I've exhausted all my resources and so have the doctors. I used to have a real keen sense of smell. Sometimes, I would be the only one to smell things, no one else could, but no more.

Lori.  I had a similar problem to yours for 50 years, until I found a miracle cure, Evening Primrose Oil.

Please read my post Sinus Infection-AnEffective Treatment, dated 9-22016.

Evening Primrose Oil desensitises the nervous system, including the nose and sinuses, so the body does not react to normal irritants. It works in about 4 hours, and lasts for a further 24 hours, so one 1000mg capsule daily is usually sufficient.

Evening Primrose Oil is not a drug, so it has no adverse side affects and does not affect mental ability.

Try this śimple treatment, you might be as surprised as I was.

    Regards Ray

I take oil of orageno, and then in a netti pot of cooled boiled water I put just a pinch of sea salt, six drops of grapefruit seed extract, and a squirt of no tears baby shampoo, Then I warm it in the microwave till it's just slight warm, and use half for each side of my sinuses. I have had this sinus infection for a few years, and it is almost completely gone, I had tons of antibotics and steriods that only damaged my memory, didn't help at all. I also take flaxseed oil and fish oil, but the oil of orageno is a natural antibotic, kills fungus and bacteria. Do yourself a favor and use this method. You will star felling better. Dena t

      Hi Dena,

Thanks so much for your suggestion.  At this point, I'll try anything.  I actually got to look at my sinuses through the doctor's scope last week on a screen because I refused a fifth CT scan.  There was absolutely no sign of infection, polyps, inflammation, etc.  My doctors are clueless.  They can't see why I'm having symptoms, including horrible sinus pressure headache in between my eye / bridge of my nose when my tests and office exams come out normal.

I hope you ontinue to feel better!

      Thanks again.

I had my first sinus surgery in 2006. I had gone to an all-maie ENT group. They were very reputable - but they didn't solve my problem. Less than 3 months after that surgery, I was sick with another sinus infection. When I returned to see the doctor who had performed my surgery, he was very dismissive. I knew I had to find a better doctor.

I decided to look for a female ENT doctor. I needed someone who would take my complaints seriously, and who was experienced in the latest sinus surgery techiques. I found a doctor at Georgetown Hospital - a teaching hospital. She listened to me and was very supportive. She ordered a CT scan, which revealed a massive sinus infection. So I had to undergo another sinus surgery to clear things up.

This doctor used a balloon dilitation technique to remove the infection without the old-fashioned "scraping" technique that the other doctors used. Recovery was easier. But I had to add things to my morning and even routines to lesson the recurrance of sinus woes.  Even with the new techoiques, I had to undergo further sinus surgery in 2009. I haven't had sinus surgery since, but my sinuses and upper respiratory system have been compromised - and I continue to be susceptable to colds and bronchial infections.

I use a "Sinu-Pulse" machine to irrigate my sinuses in the morning and before I go to bed. It acts like a Waterpic for the sinuses, and helps to clean out excessive mucus. I use a saline power solution - like the kind Neil Med sells. I also mix two different medications into the solution: Budesinide in the am, and Mupiricin in the evening.  I also spray Dymista in each nostril.  And every morning I take (generic) Claritan D - 24 hr non drowsy formula -  to lessen the amount of mucus my sinuses produce.

This is an ongoing battle for me. Every time I catch a cold it turns into bronchitis. I don't think I will ever be "cured" of this condition. But I have worked with my doctor to continually try new medications to ease my symptoms.

So my advice is to find a (younger) female doctor, trained in the latest ENT techniques, who will listen to your complaints. That is the first step. Understand that there is no "cure" for this condition, but you can live with chronic sinusitus if you find the right combination of meds to ease your sypmtoms.
