2 broken ankles in 1 year

Back in June of this year I suffered a trimalleolar fracture of my left ankle with a dislocation playing in a coed volleyball league. I had surgery a week later where a plate and 11 screws were inserted into my leg. I spent 3 months in a cast non weight bearing and had another surgery 2 months after the break to remove the syndesmotic screw going between my tibia and fibula. I started partial weight bearing in September and have been walking ever since. Usual aches and pains that come from an injury like mine but nothing I couldn't manage. Overall everything in my left ankle was healing on schedule and then.....

I slipped coming down the stairs at house and broke my right ankle. Knew it as soon as it happened. Went to the ER that night and was diagnosed with a fractured fibula, torn ligaments, and a sprained foot. I'm seeing a specialist on Wednesday to see if I need another surgery. Hopefully not because one ankle surgery is enough lol. Currently in a splint and back on crutches and just hoping for the best.

    Dion,

What a double whammy for you. You have my sympathies.

They say the the most accidents occur in the home-- ain't that the truth. And it seems we all take stairs for granted and absent-mindedness sometimes takes us for a spill.

Hopefully you can dodge another surgery-- you know by experience what a bum deal that is.

You'll need to take especially good care of the left ankle now, since it will bear the brunt of your movements while in non-weight bearing status.

    Good luck.

Did you see the specialist? I’m so sorry to hear about this! I had my surgery over the summer and it was more work than I’d anticipated, by far. Thankfully you’re more knowledgeable now after one down. This one is a glass half full. Hope you heard good news!
