2 months of fatigue, hot hands, slight pain in chest - Clueless, please help :(

Hey all,

I'm more and more desperate, no doctor has been able to help me, so I'm turning to you guys. Perhaps, someone has experienced similar symptoms? 😕

I've been experiencing fatigue for over two months now.

  • I wake up half-dead without feeling refreshed after 8-10 hours of sleep and get unusually tired incredibly early (e.g. 6 PM).
  • All this is coupled with a feverish feeling without fever. Especially in the nights, my hands and feet feel quite hot. (When all of this started, I was quite certain I just had a fever. But later, I started checking my temperature and to my surprise, it always showed normal body temperature...)
  • Sometimes dry cough, especially in the mornings. I've had instanced where this made me have a hoarse voice, though that hasn't happened for a while.
  • A pain in the chest area - more specifically, in the sternum area, developed one month in. The pain is not strong (also weaker than in the first days), usually I would feel nothing but there are certain body positions in which I would feel a small ache. Weirdly also, this position does not remain the same over the days.

Maybe also interesting would be the days before it started (but maybe it is also useless, I'm not sure):

  • I spent the evening/night in a park near a river with some friends and ate some self-made salad. I doubt the salad was bad, as nobody else is sick and I'm not sure if it could be some bug bite. I live in Germany, so the only dangerous bug could be the tick but I never developed rashes or even a fever, so something like lyme disease doesn't seem likely?
  • The day after, I also spent with a few friends. I ate pork roast for lunch and in the evening (around 9 PM) I started feeling uncharacteristically tired.

About me:

  • I would say that I eat quite healthy and was also doing a lot of sports before this started.
  • Doctors would ask me if maybe my university studies would be a cause but I'm quite sure it is not: it's among the favourite things in my life and I have never felt stress related to my studies (I rarely feel stressed out in general but am quite a happy person I would say)

What the doctors have tried

  • Blood tests
  • Check organs with ultrasound
  • ECG and ultrasound for heart with cardiologist
  • X-ray of chest area

Each of those turned out normal/healthy.

My new doctor wants to test for vitamin D and B12 deficiency, though I really doubt that those could be the causes.

I'm honestly not sure what to do. I just moved into a new city for my masters (one week ago). The lectures start next week and I want to make new friends, but my energy level is so low and I'm also scared about Covid since my body is already weak...

If just any of you could give suggestions or maybe have experienced similar symptoms, please help me! Thank you.

Has anyone suggested this might be a food intolerance? Could the cough be caused by reflux irritating your throat? Reflux could also be causing the chest pain. Are you eating a lot of dairy produce? This can sometimes cause the sort of problems you are experiencing. Milk/cheese/yoghurt/ probiotic drinks?

Did you introduce something new into your diet a couple of months ago? Is your diet very high in fat?

You could try doing a food diary, making a record of everything you consume every day, and you may then see "peaks" of your discomfort when you eat a particular food. You could also try leaving out all dairy produce for 2 weeks and seeing if it improves things.

      Hello Marina_Dee,

thank you for your answer! Unfortunately, I don't think that's it, I only rarely eat dairy products, my diet is not high in fat and there was no change in my diet.

I'm guessing you have already had your Thyroid checked?? The only other thing is a viral illness which has not been identified, but often they are not identifiable. If it is an unknown virus then you may have these symptoms for some time.

Hmm, my thyroid was only checked via ultrasound which seemed healthy. Not identifiable certainly doesn't sound very fun 😦

The blood tests showed that I have a vitamin D deficiency (15ng/ml) and a slight vitamin B12 deficiency.

Not sure what could have been the cause of these deficiencies. So I'll try to get these levels up again and hope that it'll help with my symptoms.

Update: I'm unfortunately still not better. The chest pain is almost gone but the (occasional) hoarse voice, cough, heavy fatigue, brain fog, feverishness all remain. My doctors still cannot find anything out of the ordinary and my vitamin D level is at an normal point as well.

It's awful, frustrating and depressing to live with these conditions and I just don't know what to do...

I hope that you guys are/stay/will become healthy.
