Hi
?I have a accapella to help clear lungs. No one can actually tell you what caused your bronchiectasis. If you research it some websites say it could be if you had a bad case of measels or pneumonia as a child that has scarred your lungs. I does'nt help if you have smoked either. If you drink lots of water and exercise will help shift some of the sputum,

Tony, how much have the docs talked with you about the effects of working with tar asbestos? Do you have any other lung diagnosis aside from bronchiectasis? Here in the States there's been a lot of hullabaloo about asbestos damage for a long time.
I think that my bronchiectasis is textbook from infections, starting with a terrible one 32 years ago. I probably have had infections in my lungs for several years now but had no idea because I don't run fevers. My cough got worse but I just thought that it was a progression of COPD.
Do you feel like sharing the names of the meds you're on? I assume you're in the UK & use different meds than we have here. Don't share if you're not comfortable doing that.

Thanks, Tony. My mucus thinner is different, no sulfa component out of an abundance of caution.
Some days it doesn't feel like the thinner does much good. If it feels that way for a few days, I skip a day or 2. I'm not recommending that bad habit. As to antibiotics, we're hoping to get me to where I can try azithromiacin. I'm allergic to it so they're going to try some "challenge" protocol while I stay in the hospital for a day - have to be close in case I stop breathing or heart stops. Gotta get our thrills somewhere, don't we?
But 1st of course I have to be off other antibiotics for several weeks ,,, in other words, I may never get a chance at Z-pack again.
Did you tell the doctor who diagnosed you about your asbestos exposure?

Tony,
I was told by specialists that a person can develope this condition one way by having childhood diseases, such as mumps, measles, chicken pox and most importanly whooping cough. These diseases causes scaring in the lungs. So, since me and 3 of my other siblings had all of these diseases, why was I the only one to develope bronchiectasis? And why was I diagnosed in my late 30s (of course, back then, they said I had allergies, then asthma, then COPD, then by way of a CT scan 5 yrs ago, I was correctly diagnosed with Bx) when I started having coughing and breathing issues? Some people develope Bx in their teen or younger years. I'm 67 yrs old.
I have read that not only childhood diseases, but life events (stress) contribute to getting Bx. In my early 20s I worked in a sewing factory for 2 yrs, breathing in fabric fibers. I started having sinus problems when I got pregnant for the first time. In my late 30s, I was going to college for a degree and taking care of 3 kids with my husband who worked long hours, then started working fulltime and going to college parttime. They said stress can bring on Bx. Also, during this time, we built a house and lived in it for 12 yrs. Could there have been something in the building supplies? Some houses have mold that no one is aware of. I have an immune defiency that I have to have an IV every 4 weeks.
Well, this is gettingto be a too long of a response, so check the internet, there is a lot of information on bronchiectasis. It's a progressive illness, but if you can keep it under control, you can slow down the progression.
Take care, Beth

Tony,
I didn't think at the time when I wrote my previous responce, that having pneumonia(s), lung infections, smoking and other things that irritate the lungs can also contribute to the illness.
Take care, Beth

Tone,
I get asked all the time if I ever smoked. It's just a standard question that they ask. I smoked briefly in high school in 1968. Didn't care for it and thought it was a waste of money (30 cents a pack). That was the smartest decision I ever made.
One instance in the past, when I was coughing a lot, a person said very rightously to me "You should stop smoking". I told her I don't smoke and that I cough because of all the pollution that she as well as I produce to fowl up the quality of air that we breath.
With children now a days that get vaccines against those childhood illnesses, there should be a big decline with this illness. And going forward, doctors should be more and more able to correctly diagnose Bx.
Beth
