2 weeks after Aquablation

So far this has been much better than i had imagined.

Do not let your doctor or insurance or hospital let you out for at least 3 days.

I was discharged on the second day and developed a 102 fever so went to ER.

It was not an UTI and still no reason for the temp change, but while the hospital was trying to find out why, my bladder was under constant watch for blood etc.

Left hospital sans Foliey.

Some incotinece for a few days and some pain voiding, but one week later after 2nd discharge flow is controled and only mildly uncomfortable.

Really pleased.

You did not take any antibiotics after the surgery and the 102 fever went away by itself? How soon did you have the catheter removed?

      Surgery was on October 27th.

Right after the surgery i was on an IV of an antibotic.

Discharged a day and half later without a catheter.

Now within 3 hours upon arriving home body temp approached 102 degrees. Suspected an UTI. I had some oral antibacterial meds but knew that was not enough.

I had previously told my doctor to keep me in the hospital, another day, no luck.

Went to ER of different hospital and was admitted and catherterized.

Blood test showed no UTI or any other infection. Temp went back to normal in a few hours in my room.

3 days on a saline IV until no sign of blood. Also an IV of Cipro the entire time.

Very Painful voiding for 3 days due to the bladder spasms according to doctor while in hospital.

Constipation was definitely an issue, but given treatment laxatives.

Discharged without a catherter. Some incontinence but wore Depends for 3 more days, all day then just nights.

Voiding less painful each day with the stream becoming less frequent but close to what I experienced decades ago.

Today, a little discomfort peeing but stream is full and bladder is fully emptied I belivee.

No sudden urges to pee and constipation is totally gone.

Drugs during last two weeks were Flomax, Cipro, Finasteride and Dox.....something.

Surprised you didn't have the catheter after the surgery. Do you still have bleeding? What was your prostate size before the procedure?

    • Posted

No bleeding and I believe it was an 85.

Total retention started on August 22nd.

ER drained only 1 litre and sent me home.

      2 days later.....

Admitted to hosptial on August 24 for three days to drain out the 8 litres ER didnt and get constipation to go away.

Discharged with Foliey for 6 weeks.

Then, Urologist removed catherter but within 5 hours no peeing and much pain.

Back to doctor and then on catherter that is when he talked me into the Aquablation surgery for 3 weeks later like October 27th.

If you have managed care with Medicare or an HMO ,GOOD LUCK youll need it!

How long had you been on the finasteride before the procedure? Did the finasteride not help reducing symptoms?

3 weeks and of course my Urologist knew that wasnt going to work because he says it takes years to do anything mainly because your prostate took years to get to this state. Excellant when your doctor tells the facts,

How are you doing in terms of emptying your bladder completely and the strength of your stream?

    • Edited

Total bladder being emptied and steam is getting to where I was decades ago.

I am in a very similar situation. But my urologist is not ready to do aquablation since my prostrate is only 37gm (or thereabouts).

How much was your PVR before the surgery?

I went to the doc today and the scanner detected close to 800cc. It seems my obstruction is not that severe. But my bladder has stopped giving good contractions. I have been in the range of 400-600cc PVR for the last 3 years.

Not sure if I can continue to live like this as long as kidney function is not compromised. I was advised to get Urolift done with a 20% chance of success. I decided against it.

800 cc is way too much PVR. Even 400cc is too much. You should consider self cathing before your kidneys go bad. Hank

I had been self cathing for 3 months since August this year. But every 10-15 days, I get an infection (or infection like symptoms). I use Coloplast Speedicath soft FR 14. I have used FR16 also. On reading some forums, I got some samples of Cure Compact. But could never push the catheter from within the bag and gave up.

After 3 months, I was trying the OFF routine to give my bladder a chance to work. Doesn't look it helped and I need to go back to the self-cathing inspite of the fear of infections.

Some thing must be wrong with your self cathing process. I have been self cathing for 7 years without a single UTI. What is the part number of your Coloplast Speedicath soft FR 14 catheter? I have never heard of it. Maybe it comes in with a different name? Hank

Happy for you. Question about your frequency.

My frequency almost often feels like a constant urge to pee at the tip of my penis or at times at the base, like just outside the prosthetic urethra. is that what you felt, or more a bladder sensation to pee? I don't think my bladder gets full and anywhere near retention. I go often and pee as my bladder fills up. How much is left not sure but I sure do seem to go often.

My urges sounded very similar to yours.

I think a normal, bladder will never be totally empty.

When I was catherterized when I could not pee at all, ER took out 8 litres.

That amount was definitley getting painful and thus a trip to ER.

8 liters, that's crazy. i barely drink a liter of water a day and waiting until i resolve my pipes before pushing 2 or 3 liters a day. for fear of feeling retained all day. thanks!

Well the nurses couldn't believe it either. The said...'see you lost 7 lbs in 7 hours'...

And gain it right back because the hospital food was that good as you order what ever you want including wine through a menu all day long.
