I just want to share my positive experience here as I've seen too many scary recovery stories in the forums & youtube that I feel may scare off people who may want to do the surgery, so I hope my story will give courage to those who want to go through this Surgery.
I had been suffering from hemorrhoids for 16 years. It started with my 1st pregnancy but as years goes by, the condition become worse and it start protruding that I have to always push back in after every BM. Hemorrhoids flare ups only happened due to constipation while pregnant but after my 4th child, the flare ups become more random and much frequent. Especially eversince covid, lockdowns and staying at home became a new norm and this had me staying alot at home and I guess due to me lacking movements (alot of slogging at home), my condition gets worst until my last straw was just 2 months ago my hems get prolapsed and thrombosed right after a bowel movement, it was so damn painful (as pain as childbirth without using epidural) that got me into A&E. After that I've decided to finally go through hemorrhoidectomy.
It has been 2 weeks post op recovery for me. I had 2 internal hems removed, 2 small polyps & 1 large polyp which connects to the external hemorrhoid. The removal was done with me under general anesthesia with local anesthesia injected to the surgery area using diathermy knife. I have cauterized wounds inside as well as stitches which is from inside until slightly outside (about 1mm as what I can feel with my finger)
Waking up from the surgery I do feel pain but nothing that I can't handle. As I had a recent episode with hemorrhoids, I still remember the feeling of that pain which was much worse than the pain I felt after surgery. So if u know your pain during hemorrhoids flare ups, the pain after surgery is lesser even after the local anesthesia wears off, at least for my case. FYI, my local anesthesia only lasted me 4hrs.
It is important is that u need to change your diet after surgery so that u can poop soft stool and not constipated. Stick to soft liquid diet for atleast the 1st 3 days. Drink 1 glass of water as soon as u wake up in the morning. Drink alot of water the rest of the day. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables daily and don't forget to take stool softerner as prescribed. lucky for me, I only took painkiller once on the day after discharged from hospital. I shifted to solid food on day 5 since I managed to poop daily.
Expect pain and discomfort after pooping but again, if u had felt the pain pooping during flare ups, the pain of pooping after surgery is much lesser as long as u are not constipated and did not strain. Take long deep breath with ur mouth in & out while pooping cause it will definitely relax ur muscle to allow the poop to flow out with ease. I learned this from youtube. If can, get a step stool to put ur feet up when doing business. Also if can, install a hand spray bidet to help u with cleaning after bowel. Warm salty water sitz bath is very helpful to expedite healing and ease the pain and keep your anus dry. Do sitz bath daily at least 3 times a day and after every bowel.
Previously, I used to manage pooping every after 2 or 3 days sometime more days but With what I've been doing so far now, I manage to poop daily. My Bleeding from anus stopped after 1 week & discharge stopped on day 12.
2 weeks post surgery, I have no more pain except only the discomfort during pooping due to the stitches but the discomfort dissappear after I've completed pooping.
I not sure whether am I just lucky or is it because of how I manage myself post surgery that helps me with pain management or is it because I had went through so much pain before that I felt the pain post surgery is not bad for me. But I am really hoping that my positive review here will send a message to all sufferers who are thinking of hemorrhoidectomy that, despite what you've read anywhere, you will definitely survive it. You can do it. End your suffering. Look out for tips and advise, but I believe the most important advise is to DRINK ALOT OF WATER, DO NOT CONSTIPATE & DO NOT STRAIN.
