2 weeks since TKR - will my knee bend again?

Posted , 9 users are following.

Hi. I had a total knee replacement two weeks ago. Progress is OK though still very painful. I'm doing all of my exercises including trying to bend my knee. This is painful but also seems almost impossible! The operated knee is still about three times the size of the good knee and I keep thinking something will snap if I push it too far back! I'm left to do my physio until I get assessed by the physio team in six weeks' time. I can bend the knee about 50% at the moment. Any tips/experiences as to how long this might take? Cheers!

If your knee is still swollen you won't be able to bend it much use an ice pack or frozen peas to help reduce the swelling and elevate it before you try exercising make sure you have taken your pain relief before hand as this will help it takes time but you will get there

Thanks Sharon. The frozen peas are in and out of the freezer with great regularity! They do seem to help. I'm on co-codamol and Longtec tablets, a total of 12 per day. Thanks for your advice.

Little and often is the best thing for exercises, ice & resting. Keeping on top of medication is the key. The swelling will take a while to go. The leg will probably always look a bit different though.

The best exercises at the beginning are to put the heel up on a stool, allowing gravity to straighten. Then with foot on floor try to move it back as far as possible, holding it for a count of ten. This works better with a sock on or a bag over the foot.

Compared to me you're doing great. I'm at 14 weeks post and need a further op. You will improve.

The 1st 2 or 3 weeks are generally horrible, then it slowly gets better......but again, slowly. Take your pains meds as prescribed........not when the pain hits. Hydration and rest. A tired, dried out body will not heal properly. Make sure you medicate before excercising. Some meds it takes 1/2 an hour , some takes an hour to get into the bloodstream but make sure they are helping you out before you start the routine. Icing and elevation the after excercise routine. Many who have gone through this still aren't aware they have been through one of the most brutal surgeries going and their s surgeons don't do a good job of communicating that to them. Most are impatient. They go into it thinking life of old will be just a short turn around the corner. When they suddenly realize what they have gotten into they panic that they are never going to walk again and this pain is permanent. Take it slow and steady. Do the exercises and above all, rest every time you have a chance. Don't worry about what others think. There are those that think you should be running marathons in 30 days. You'll be fine but don't start measuring progress for 6 weeks. You'll be fine.....best of luck

I am 10weeks  op and my leg is still swollen, great on the morning, I have a slim ankle then from lunch onwards, I don't have a ankle and my knee looks nothing like a knee, nothing will snap if you push it back, a carrier bag over your foot helps, I still haven't got 70 per cent bend even now, very stiff when I stand up, feels like a metal band round my knee, but I'm assured this is all normal and will get better, so be patient, early days yet.

the swelling is not unusual keek icing and get doctor to give you anti inflamatorys to help swelling do the usual dont sit too much&   dont stand too much and walk as much as you can  its a slow prosses keep bending it it wont break thats for sure .  if you dont do the bending and straightening enough you will pay for it later you need 90 degrees to sit properly or to use pedels on a bike try to get that first and after that increase it best of luck

Progress is slow but steady. I'm just 5 weeks PO but the first 2-3 weeks were the pits!!!! Don't expect too much at first. One day at a time and keep doing your exercises and DO NOT forget your pain meds, before there is any real pain. You can have swelling up to 3 months or longer, so I've been told. Everyone is different. Your knee will bend again!!!

Hi, I had a TKR 4 weeks ago, I am doing good, can do stairs, drive, walk but I am having a hard time bending the knee, I am only at 60% and they are looking for at least 90. I go to Physical Therapy 3 times a week but find bending the knee very painful and it seems impossible to do. I can sympathize with you. Keep in touch and let me know your progress. Have a good day and be happy
