2 years of throat clearing, thick mucus and post nasal drip sensation (allergy/reflux/nerve?)

Hello,
Suffering for 2 years with sensation of thick mucus stuck at the back of the nose, which I'm often able to hock up out of my mouth (clear but very "snotty" and like thick glue when it's in a tissue).
Sometimes it gets in my throat and I often clear my throat all day long too. I guess this is post-nasal drip, but not watery or thin (like you apparently get from an allergy), it's very thick and feels awful like a lump or glob that won't move, until I hock it up, but within minutes it's back again...
Tried all reflux and allergy medications (double-dose PPIs, steroid sprays, allergy RAST tests, antihistamines, singulair, antihistamine sprays, nasal irrigation, gastrocopy, multiple nasal/throat endoscopes, sinus CT scans), and they can't identify the problem... All of my symptoms disappear completely, when I eat or lay down with my head to either side (which I find very odd! Equally, if I take pseudoephridrine (oral decongestant), my symptoms go too (but I know that's not a long term option).
Anyone ever dealt with anything similar or know what to suggest next?I've been thinking of self-treating with amitriptyline (10mg at night) and gabapentin (100mg 3x per day), to see if this is a hypersensitivity/nerve issue. I have absolutely no other symptoms and can't live much longer like this, it's completely ruined my life and things are just getting worse
Thanks for any help at all.

I have had this for years now and have never been able to figure out what caused it nor could my physicians.
Back in July I was once again searching for information using the search words "thick mucus in back of throat"....Just like I had before when I found this thread.
But I found something different this time .
I found someone who said that they had had this for nearly a decade and had suddenly been cured by one single action ....eliminating ALL SUGAR from their diet.
So.... although I have been a sugar-aholic for all of my 62 years on EARTH... I decided it was worth whatever distress it would cause me ... just to find out if it would work .
BINGO!!!!!!! 'nuff said 😃) AMAZING how easy it is to give up sugar....if it means you no longer have to feel like you're constantly chocking to death.

Amazing! This has to be worth a go. Have you tried using any sugar substitutes at all? If so do they cause the same problem?

Some years back I tried switching from regular sodas to sugar free with aspertame (just as a measure to try to lose some weight) and I broke out into a horrible rash from it.... so I'm hesitant to try it again.
I've just been drinking plain tea, water and coffee and almond milk.
I'm so thankful to be rid of the problem that I hardly mind the bland drinks at all.

My husband, who has this mucus problem, doesn't have any sweet drinks but he does like biscuits, cakes and pies. I was wondering whether you'd tried a sugar substitute in baking? It's fantastic to hear you're now clear of this debilitating condition and thank you for posting to help others.

No I've not tried any artificial sweeteners as I have responded to consuming them in the past... with a rash. 😦
But thats definitely something to consider for those who tolerate them well.

Aspartame is a poison, not so much Splenda.

I also cut down sweet stuff, but I still have some mucus, not excessive as before. What about carbs that can turn into sugar in your body? Does it affect you?

Congratulations, if cutting off sugar will help to get rid of post nasal drip. It worth trying. Thanks for sharing!

Has anyone been tested for their level of eosinophils in the blood ? mine were very high and this is part of the immune system that triggers the production of phlem in the body to remove infection. I have recently started a new trial drug that seems to be really helping, i will keep the forum posted.

I would have thought food which turn into sugar the fastest i. e fruit/fruit juices would have worst effect. At a pinch I'd say it's the sheer volume of sugar in your blood at one given time that produces an immune response and causes the phlegm. I'm gonna try low GI foods and see how that goes.
